Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

So, the heat meant that many of the tables and chairs had been set up in the shade, and someone had found outdoor table umbrellas in blue and gold, god help us all. But hey, a little heat never hurt anyone who wasn't a vampire, right?

Ahem. The picnic was open for warm, sunny business.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Khadgar was still reeling a little from everything, but he wasn't outright staring at anyone, at least. Part of that was because he had a plate of foods that he'd recognized--his bravery for new things was waning at the moment--and partly because there were some people wearing very little clothing and he wasn't sure if looking at them was appropriate. He felt very overdressed with his tunic and cloak, but at least he wouldn't be hungry for much longer.

Khadgar glanced away from his food and smiled softly. "If you mean physically well, yes. Psychologically well might be a different story. I feel a little like I've gone crazy."

"Ah, yes. That is a common reaction to this land," Thorin granted him with a smile as he bowed his head. "Thorin, son of Thrain. At your service."

Ah, someone with manners! Khadgar gave a little bow in return. "I'm Khadgar of the Kirin Tor," he said. That last part might not have quite been true but he wasn't going to correct himself. "It's a pleasure to meet you. Do you go to the school here?"

"I do indeed, despite my best efforts," he replied dryly. "May I ask who the Kirin Tor are?"

Please be something he knew. Pleeeeeeease.

"Uh, it's the circle of mages where I come from." Sorry Thorin! Khadgar's face also fell a little. "The fact that you asked lets me know I'm really not home anymore."

"My apologies," Thorin replied. "Anders is a mage. Perhaps he knows of your enclave?"

That made Khadgar perk up quite a bit. "That's good to know, I'll have to ask him. Where are you from, if you don't mind me asking? It seems like few people are from the same place."

"My people are from Erebor, the Lonely Mountain?" In case that helped. "There is a city of Men called Dale at our gates."

Speaking of people wearing very little clothing, Ringo was wearing a bright red bikini top and a pair of cut-off jean shorts (and a backback, but that wasn't exactly clothing). She grinned when she spotted someone she didn't know and headed straight toward him.

"Hi!" she chirped brightly. "You're new, right?"

The very pleasant greeting went a long way to making Khadgar feel less uncomfortable looking at the girl, and he made certain to focus on her face and smile. "Does the look of complete confusion give me away?" he asked.

"Well," Ringo drawled, smiling up at him, "it was kind of a hint? And while I don't know exactly everyone, I am pretty good at knowing when I haven't seen someone around before."

She stuck out her hand. "My name's Ringo."

"Khadgar. That's me, I mean," he said, giving her hand an awkward shake and bowing softly. "I've noticed there are quite a few people here. Are there many more people in this town?"

Ringo smiled and offered him a bit of a formal bow in return, hands clasped demurely in front of her.

It definitely had a very different effect when you were wearing a bikini rather than a yukata.

"And, um, quite a few? I mean, while there's no hard rule about it, most of the people who come to these picnics are associated with the school in some way or another, so there are plenty of other people who aren't, you know?"

"I think whoever knew I was coming thinks I'm going to the school. I mean, I like school. I like learning things, I mean," he said. "I like to understand the world and how things work, which might be why today has been particularly trying."

Her smile widened. "Lots of new stuff to absorb?" She looked him up and down, considering his clothes. "I take it that your own world isn't much like this one?"

Khadgar looked down at himself and blushed a little. "We dress somewhat differently to what I've seen here, yes. The castle would not be out of place though," he said. "This place is certainly beautiful, I suppose I could have ended up somewhere much worse."

Hurray optimism!

Someone else dressed like home! Like a Northerner or someone else who believed in too many summertime clothes, considering the cloak, but still! Vague familiarity seemed to be all Margaery could hope for today.

"Are you new to the island as well?" she asked, sidling up so that she might look his clothes over for any sigils. A direwolf would be too much to hope for, but maybe he'd have a bear or giant somewhere on his person. "Forgive me if not, but you've got the same look about you as I suspect I do."

Alas, Khadgar only had the pin on his cloak, a simple, functional circle that kept the fabric from falling around his shoulders. "Yes, I just arrived today. I'm Khadgar," he said, giving her a small smile. "It's good to know I'm not the only one who might be feeling a little overwhelmed."

"Just a touch," Margaert agreed, trying not to let her disappointment show when she saw he was free from any sort of signage. New friends were still new friends, even if they persisted in being from faraway lands.

"I'm Margaery." She returned his smile, deciding at the last moment to continue her abandonment of her title, at least when replying to an introduction in kind. "Every time I think I've got this place half figured out, today, someone reveals a new puzzle, and I'm left feeling disoriented all anew. You're far from alone."

"Did the school assign someone to you to explain things? Mine is named Eric, he said he's supposed to be like a sibling. He was very friendly, at least," Khadgar said. "Still, it's nice not to be alone."

"Mine's named Ringo," Margaery said, nodding. "And she's been enormously helpful. Where are you from, Khadgar?"

She leaned forward with a smile, as though confessing a secret. "I have to admit your clothes got my hopes up - I've talked to a few men today who fashion themselves like the men of my home, but hail from faraway lands. Don't you go disappointing me, now."

Oh goodness, he didn't want to disappoint her now, and his voice was a little shaky as he answered. "Um, I'm from a city called Dalaran? It's... I had to leave recently, but where I'm from, it's where the mages are trained," he said. "I don't suppose you've heard of it?"

Margaery, who had expected as much, heaved a dramatic sigh and clutched a hand to her chest. "Not at all," she admitted, "but that's nothing new today, as I've said. We don't even have mages in Westeros, where I'm from."

She reached over to reassuringly touch his arm, if he'd let her. "It's all right. I forgive you if you've never heard of it, either."
