Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

So, the heat meant that many of the tables and chairs had been set up in the shade, and someone had found outdoor table umbrellas in blue and gold, god help us all. But hey, a little heat never hurt anyone who wasn't a vampire, right?

Ahem. The picnic was open for warm, sunny business.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Speaking of people wearing very little clothing, Ringo was wearing a bright red bikini top and a pair of cut-off jean shorts (and a backback, but that wasn't exactly clothing). She grinned when she spotted someone she didn't know and headed straight toward him.

"Hi!" she chirped brightly. "You're new, right?"

The very pleasant greeting went a long way to making Khadgar feel less uncomfortable looking at the girl, and he made certain to focus on her face and smile. "Does the look of complete confusion give me away?" he asked.

"Well," Ringo drawled, smiling up at him, "it was kind of a hint? And while I don't know exactly everyone, I am pretty good at knowing when I haven't seen someone around before."

She stuck out her hand. "My name's Ringo."

"Khadgar. That's me, I mean," he said, giving her hand an awkward shake and bowing softly. "I've noticed there are quite a few people here. Are there many more people in this town?"

Ringo smiled and offered him a bit of a formal bow in return, hands clasped demurely in front of her.

It definitely had a very different effect when you were wearing a bikini rather than a yukata.

"And, um, quite a few? I mean, while there's no hard rule about it, most of the people who come to these picnics are associated with the school in some way or another, so there are plenty of other people who aren't, you know?"

"I think whoever knew I was coming thinks I'm going to the school. I mean, I like school. I like learning things, I mean," he said. "I like to understand the world and how things work, which might be why today has been particularly trying."

Her smile widened. "Lots of new stuff to absorb?" She looked him up and down, considering his clothes. "I take it that your own world isn't much like this one?"

Khadgar looked down at himself and blushed a little. "We dress somewhat differently to what I've seen here, yes. The castle would not be out of place though," he said. "This place is certainly beautiful, I suppose I could have ended up somewhere much worse."

Hurray optimism!

Ringo grinned. "That's the spirit!"

Optimism buddies!

"Besides, it's not that bad once you've had some time to settle in. Just gotta have someone walk you through, I don't know, phones and the internet and stuff like that."

"I... don't know what any of those things are," Khadgar said sheepishly. "Do you all have books about them somewhere?"

"Oh, sure!" Ringo grinned. "The school has a pretty extensive library. But there's so many books in there you might want to get someone to give you a primer on the important bits."

She reached into her pocket and pulled out her phone. "Like phones," she explained, waving the little glass and metal contraption at him.

The words "extensive library" definitely got Khadgar's attention, but luckily the thing in her hand was even more interesting. "That looks useful. What does it do?"

"Oh, all sorts of things! The most important thing that it does is call other phones. So, like, if I want to talk to someone else, and they have one, I can do that no matter where they are."

Didn't that sound neat?

"But it's so small," Khadgar said, completely fascinated now. "You all must have some very powerful magic here."

"Yep! Well, I guess we'd say it's technology, not magic. That's, like, a different thing. Sort of."

"I think I have a lot to learn. In a good way," Khadgar said. "But you've given me a place to start, so that's good, thank you. Did it take you very long to get used to being here? If you don't mind me asking."

"In some ways?" Ringo shrugged. "Where I'm from isn't so different as this one, so there was less to get used to, I think?"

She grinned. "But if you ever need any help, let me know! Like, I could take you phone shopping and stuff if you wanted."

"Really? It would be nice to have someone along who knows what to look for." Khadgar's face fell as he thought for a moment. "I'll have to find some work so I can earn the money for a phone, I think."

Ringo's own face grew a bit serious, too. "Yeah." She sighed. "I mean, there are cheaper phones, but even then you have to pay each month to keep them working."

Stupid need for money.

Maybe Ringo should consider getting a job, too, rather than just stretching her allowance from back home every month.
