Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

So, the heat meant that many of the tables and chairs had been set up in the shade, and someone had found outdoor table umbrellas in blue and gold, god help us all. But hey, a little heat never hurt anyone who wasn't a vampire, right?

Ahem. The picnic was open for warm, sunny business.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Margaery had been more than a little curious about the food - not to mention she was fairly ravenous - but had restricted herself to only a small sampling of things as she filled her plate. Even the act of doing so was unfamiliar, since at home she would have been attended to by any number of servants to fetch whatever she might need.

Still, she tried to maintain the smile she'd been wearing since the Portalocity lounge. Everything here was strange, and desperately unfamiliar, and maybe even a little frightening. But it was an adventure, she told herself. And she was a Tyrell, and she would not wilt in the face of the unknown.

She found herself a spot under an umbrella (which she rather liked, honestly - the colors reminded her of a tournament) to daintily eat and watch people from a short distance. She needed to gain some sort of bearings here, and quickly.

The new girl looked like a medieval princess. At least that was what Lucille thought. Perhaps the bare arms and the deep necklines contradicted this a little, but despite this Lucille found herself staring a little. When realizing that was what she was doing, she looked away, though.

"I love your gown," Margaery called with a bright smile, noticing the girl looking at her. Truthfully, it was a bit warm-looking for her, for summer - not to mention somewhat conservative for her tastes - but a white lie extended in kindness had helped her more often than it had ever hurt. "I absolutely must have the name of your seamstress."

As though she needed more clothes, really.

Lucille was a little taken aback, but she offered the new girl a somewhat tense smile. "I'm afraid my seamstress," not that she really had one, "Is from my own world. But the clothes shop here is better than you might expect."

"I had to leave mine at home, too," Margaery sighed. Finally, someone who would understand her woes on this matter. "Is - the clothing shop here doesn't exclusively cater to...?"

She gestured vaguely towards a young lady dressed in what she was gathering to be the regional style. She didn't hate it, but she would really miss her skirts if that was to be expected every day.

It was obvious to Lucille that the girl came from a wealthier background than herself, but they agreed on contemporary clothing at least.

"Oh no," she assured her. "I wouldn't wear something like that. The shop offers quite a selection of beautiful dresses and other things."

"The fashion here seems a bit different from what I'm accustomed to," Margaery admitted with a grin. "It may take me my entire tenure on this island to grasp their norms, I fear."

She shook her head, hair bouncing, and reached a hand out to the other girl. "Forgive me. Lady Margaery, of House Tyrell. It is wonderful to meet you."

"Miss Lucille Sharpe." She accepted the hand. "Although I must warn you, no one here uses titles."

She wasn't sure what to make of Margaery, but for now she was going to be polite.

"Really?" Margaery asked, frowning. "Well don't I feel foolish, then. I've been using mine for all my introductions. Do we not call the teachers by their title and House's name, at lease?"

Lucille leaned forward a little, as if telling Margaery a terrible secrets. "Many of the teachers prefer that we use only their first names."

"Really?" Margaery, on the other hand, seemed utterly delighted by the idea. "How wonderfully scandalous. I wonder if my grandmother knew."

It didn't seem like her grandmother or father had known nearly as much about this place as they had let on, in hindsight. She doubted they would have approved of her being forced to have a roommate.

Lucille wouldn't call it wonderful, but it could be worse. "If scandals are to your taste, I'm sure you will find you have come to the right place."

[identity profile] hidingthorns.livejournal.com 2016-08-27 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"I find a good scandal breaks up the monotony of day-to-day life," Margaery confided, smiling. "What else is there ever to talk about?"

Oh, just you wait, Margaery.

Classic High Fantasy, meet Deconstructed High Fantasy! This'll go well.

"Greetings," Thorin said with a polite incline of his head. Because her clothing didn't look too dissimilar to what he had seen in Dale. Which was a possible link to getting him home already.

"And to you, ser," Margaery replied, with a similar bow of her head. More familiar clothes! Her eyes scanned over him for any sign of a sigil, as she had done with Anders. The Lannister family's visit to Highgarden rang through her memory, and she remembered her manners - she didn't wish for him to think her rude, of course. "Are you a new traveler as well?"

Hella rude! He was positively giant for a dwarf, thank you very much.

"No, my stay here has been... longer than I would have liked," he replied wryly. Sadly for her, there were no sigils or signs of rank as it was mostly just expected that people recognize kingliness at all times. Because Tolkien.

"Are you not enjoying your time here?" Margaery asked, surprised. She'd been awed and a little frightened, so far, but she'd at least been somewhat enjoying herself. "It seems such a pleasant - if odd - place, at least at first blush."

Odd was one way to put it. She almost was wondering if she'd drunk something stronger than she'd thought, with how today had been going.

He'd tell her about the wonders of Gatorade should she drink enough to deal with this place.

He sighed and looked around. "It has been... enlightening into the ways of Men. But I did not wish to be parted from my family or people."

"Oh, I know what you mean," Margaery said, softening a bit. "I had to say goodbye to my grandmother and father and brothers when I left Highgarden. I already miss them horribly."

She sighed a little wistfully, before straightening her back. "Forgive me," she said, holding out her hand (to be kissed or bowed over rather than shaken, of course.) "Lady Margaery, of House Tyrell. I'm not usually so ill-mannered."

Thorin's eyebrows went up and he smiled at the formal title. He did not hear them often here, after all.

"Thorin, son of Thrain," he said, taking the hand with a small, polite bow. "At your service. Forgive me, I do not know the houses of Men so well as I should."

[identity profile] hidingthorns.livejournal.com 2016-08-27 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
"We have women in them too, you know," Margaery joked. "Not that we're allowed to rule them alone, but it's not just Houses of Men."

Much though she might enjoy visiting a House of Men.

"Your styling isn't Westerosi," she noted, a little disappointed again. "Where is your home, Thorin, son of Thrain?"

Well, that much was obvious if you asked him. Though Men got weird when there were beards involved.

"Erebor, near to the city of Dale," he replied, frowning a little at her words. "You are from the west?"

WHERE THE DAMN, DIRTY ELVES SAIL OFF TO?

"The Reach," she said, nodding. "My father rules from Highgarden."

She suspected that those places would be as unfamiliar to him as his locations had been to her, but she still offered them. "I think I am much further from home than I had known I would be, honestly. No one's home has sounded familiar to me, even from maps." Margaery looked apologetic. "I'm afraid I know of neither Erebor or Dale."

Thorin nodded graciously at that. "It is much the same for me. You will find very few come from the same places here. Erebor is one of the great kingdoms of Dwarves in the north where I am from. Dale is the city of Men at our gates."

RE: Re: General Mingling [Fall 2016]

[identity profile] hidingthorns.livejournal.com 2016-08-27 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Margaery eyed him curiously. "Please don't think me impertinent," she ventured, "but I've only met one dwarf back in Westeros, and he very much still considered himself a man." She had only been three-and-ten at the time and had been firmly kept out of his interest, but she remembered the gossip amongst her ladies. "Is the custom different in Erebor and Dale?"

She needed to learn now, lest she offend him - or anyone else - unintentionally later.
