Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

So, the heat meant that many of the tables and chairs had been set up in the shade, and someone had found outdoor table umbrellas in blue and gold, god help us all. But hey, a little heat never hurt anyone who wasn't a vampire, right?

Ahem. The picnic was open for warm, sunny business.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

It was obvious to Lucille that the girl came from a wealthier background than herself, but they agreed on contemporary clothing at least.

"Oh no," she assured her. "I wouldn't wear something like that. The shop offers quite a selection of beautiful dresses and other things."

"The fashion here seems a bit different from what I'm accustomed to," Margaery admitted with a grin. "It may take me my entire tenure on this island to grasp their norms, I fear."

She shook her head, hair bouncing, and reached a hand out to the other girl. "Forgive me. Lady Margaery, of House Tyrell. It is wonderful to meet you."

"Miss Lucille Sharpe." She accepted the hand. "Although I must warn you, no one here uses titles."

She wasn't sure what to make of Margaery, but for now she was going to be polite.

"Really?" Margaery asked, frowning. "Well don't I feel foolish, then. I've been using mine for all my introductions. Do we not call the teachers by their title and House's name, at lease?"

Lucille leaned forward a little, as if telling Margaery a terrible secrets. "Many of the teachers prefer that we use only their first names."

"Really?" Margaery, on the other hand, seemed utterly delighted by the idea. "How wonderfully scandalous. I wonder if my grandmother knew."

It didn't seem like her grandmother or father had known nearly as much about this place as they had let on, in hindsight. She doubted they would have approved of her being forced to have a roommate.

Lucille wouldn't call it wonderful, but it could be worse. "If scandals are to your taste, I'm sure you will find you have come to the right place."

"I find a good scandal breaks up the monotony of day-to-day life," Margaery confided, smiling. "What else is there ever to talk about?"

Oh, just you wait, Margaery.

"I am not fond of gossiping," Lucille replied with less enthusiasm. "And I'm not sure if it is scandalous where you are from," Lucille did not look at Margarey's cleavage, "But young men here enjoy going around without their shirts on."

She nodded towards Dante, with a look of disapproval on her face.

Margaery's look was clear on the other side of the spectrum from disapproval.

"I am the lone female of my family," she said, tilting her head a little to take in the view, "so I am aware of men and their ways, some." Not just because of her brothers, though she'd happily blame them all day rather than admit where she snuck off to when her father slept. "But what a - strange custom." She shot Lucille a playful look. "Do they claim it is to avoid heat sickness or the like?"

That was the big difference for her, culturally - they'd pretend there was a reason to parade about shirtless if she caught a boy in undress at Highgarden. Here they seemed to have no shame.

"I haven't enquired about it," Lucille confessed. "I'm sure they would make up some stupid excuse if you did. But one gets used to it."

She no longer had to make an effort not to stare.

"I hope I never do," Margaery replied, a touch dreamily, before letting out a giggle. "They seem more - free, here, than at home. No one uses titles, clothing seems largely optional for some, young men and women linger about together absent chaperones by the looks of things...."

She glanced over at Lucille. "I'm waiting for some terrible drawback, really."

Lucille wasn't going to complain about the freedom of this time, because apart from the fashion habits she found most of it was to her advantage. But as for drawbacks...

"Strange things happen."

"That much seems obvious," Margaery said, not unkindly. "How strange?"

"You might wake up one day and find that you are a boy," Lucille said. "The island itself has been moving around this summer to all sorts of strange places. People turn into animals, and I sometimes fall asleep for several days. Books are not always inanimate objects."

Lucille could go on.

"Were you a boy?" Margaery asked, choosing to start there. "What was it like?"

She didn't think she'd like that, much, but it could prove...educational. Especially if one turned back, after.

"I looked like my brother," Lucille replied, clearly not considering this a good memory. "It was rather disturbing."

RE: Re: General Mingling [Fall 2016]

[identity profile] hidingthorns.livejournal.com 2016-08-28 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
Margaery's face may have betrayed how much fun she suddenly thought this idea not to be.

"Oh, ew." She wrinkled her nose. "I have three brothers. The idea of spending a day as any of them would be - I don't know if I could look them in the eye after. One doesn't always need to know one's family quite that intimately."

Margaery wondered which of them she'd take after, if she turned male for a day. Probably Loras - they favored each other the most, physically.

This was a silly thing to wonder about.

"That is my sentiment too," Lucille replied. At least Margaery understood this. "I love my brother dearly but I prefer not to be in his body."
