Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

So, the heat meant that many of the tables and chairs had been set up in the shade, and someone had found outdoor table umbrellas in blue and gold, god help us all. But hey, a little heat never hurt anyone who wasn't a vampire, right?

Ahem. The picnic was open for warm, sunny business.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Margaery looked at Blue across the crowd, then cocked her head back at Thorin. "You don't keep the profits yourself?" she asked, mildly surprised. "That's very generous of you."

"I have little need of the money here," he replied. "Erebor is rich enough."

"Some would say gold is gold, and more can only be better," Margaery said lightly. "It speaks well of you."

"They know not the wealth of Erebor."

Wait until he got the dragon sickness. He so cray then.

"Probably not," Margaery agreed. "It is still an admirable trait, to help those in poorer circumstances than oneself. Do you miss Erebor terribly? You speak of it so highly."

She was already beginning to miss Highgarden - not just the castle itself, but the surrounding village and fields, too, neither of which she had truly never considered much before today.

It helped that Blue didn't get too mad when he tried storing tiaras in her sock drawer.

"I find I miss my brother and sister far more than the halls of my people," he admitted.

"Are they older or younger?" Margaery asked with a soft smile. "And are you able to write to them?"

She still held hopes for visits, but letters would see her through, at least. She refused to think about the possibility of not hearing from her family for at least a year.

"Both are younger than I," he said with a faint smile at the memory of them. "But unlike most here, I have not been able to contact them since my arrival here."

Now would be an inappropriate time to verbally latch onto that 'most', and Margaery recognized it. She still felt her heart give a little leap of hope.

"Don't give up," she urged him, reaching out to touch his arm lightly, if he'd allow it. "I'm sure they think of you often. Perhaps there is something...blocking the letters to your world?"

She had no idea how any of this worked, but the very concept sounded too painful to bear, and her instinct was to offer him some sort of explanation, so he might have hope, too.

He did not acknowledge the touch beyond the comfort he was assuming it was meant to be. Even if Men were super weird about these things. "I will hold out hope," he agreed firmly. "Perhaps soon the island's whimsy will find a different target."
