Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Gosh, the summer picnic was so much nicer--and warmer--than the spring one. There were tables and chairs set up in the sun and the shade, and more than enough food for everyone. Hopefully, everyone was up for socializing for a while!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

So, it was official. Peridot was lost, stranded, and surrounded by humans.

Mostly humans.

Organics, either way, and they all seemed so very... cheerful.

She didn't even bother to hide a disdainful sneer as she looked at a table that had been set out, full of even more organic... substance. That they appeared to be eating.

Gross. Humans were gross. That was her takeaway from all of this.

Steven gasped when he saw her. There was a gem here?!

"Peridot? Did you follow me?!"

He was very concerned.

"The Steven! How are you here? Did the Pearl actually manage to land the ship? She isn't here too, is she? Or the other Crystal Gems?"

She should be running right now, shouldn't she? Running and hiding?

"Land what ship?" Steven said, totally confused. "I thought you were back with Garnet and Pearl and Amethyst!"

Steven paused. "Did you come to go to school with me?"

The Steven rarely made any sense, but now he seemed to be making any less than usual.

"They failed in taking me captive, if that's what you're implying. I made my escape, and now I'm..."

She wrinkled her nose a little.

"Here."

Back on Earth, or something like it. She didn't have time for this.

She just wanted to take some Gem-forsaken readings and get off of this doomed rock! Was that too much to ask?

There was a long silence. And then a squint. And then, in a flat tone, "I don't know what you're talking about."

So after talking about this individual with her school assigned "sibling", it only seemed fair to Tip to actually go talk to the individual in person. Though she wasn't actually certain how to go about starting a conversation with an alien that wasn't part of an invasion force.

"Hi" was always a nice way to start, at least. So that's what she went with. And "I, uh. Like your fingers."

"My what-- Oh." Peridot looked at her hands, holding one up so that the human could get a better look. "My touch-stumps. I suppose most humans would be unfamiliar with them, wouldn't they?"

Hey, she wasn't having to navigate through fun and exotic new grammatical structures. This was actually a slightly easier first conversation with an alien than she was used to.

"Yeah, humans usually have them attached to their hands," she said, splaying her own and wiggling them in return. "Your, uh, 'touch stumps' must be way more flexible, that way."

"Significantly. And far more useful," Peridot agreed, spreading them out by way of demonstration, and then once again trying to use them to form her screen. It flickered into view for... about two seconds. And then sputtered and flickered away again.

Peridot growled at it a little.

"Usually."

Oooo, Tip knew that look. J.Lo got that look when something went weirdly wrong on Slushious. "You know, I have some alien tools. They're not from -- wherever you're from -- but they're more advanced than human stuff. Maybe they could help you fix -- that."

Whatever it was Peridot had just tried to do.

So help her, for the first time since landing on this rock, Peridot let herself look the slightest bit hopeful.

"You do? They might? I don't have experience with much technology that didn't originate on the Gem Homeworld, but if there's any chance that your alien tools are compatible with Gem technology, I would be a fool to refuse."

... That was a 'yes, please.'

Tip smiled. "We can take a look at them later, then. I don't know what half of them do, but J.Lo insisted I couldn't go to school without a full set. He's a Boov. Not a Gem." She was babbling just a little. "Do you know Steven, then?"

"I don't know what a Boov is," Peridot confessed, and then squinted a little. "But I have met the Steven."

This was not Steven-approval in her voice, no. Not by a long shot.

But Thorin wasn't paying attention to that for the moment because he was looking at the stone embedded in the... green being's forehead with interest. "Greetings."

Peridot looked to the side. And then down at the person who had spoken to her. And then the other way, for good measure, before pointing to herself and raising a questioning eyebrow.

"Were you talking to me?"

He certainly seemed to be staring at her, which was probably also a good clue.

... Don't judge her too hard for looking, Thorin. There were moments when Peridot functioned extremely literally.

When she turned around again, at least it was with the beleaguered expression of somebody who had just done something extremely stupid, and who was actually realizing it.

"Right. Then... greetings."

Yes, Thorin was trying very hard to not be deeply amused by that. He was a prince, after all. He had some level of decorum. "Thorin, son of Thrain. At your service."

Peridot very nearly asked a bewildered, 'At my service?' but caught herself, this time around. With any luck, she'd only get caught making that same mistake the once, during this conversation.

"Peridot," she said instead, correctly assuming that the organic creature was offering her a name. And then, because he'd been so much more specific than humans like the Steven had been, she added, "Facet-2F5L Cut-5XG."

"You are named after the gem stone you possess?" Look, if Dwarves, gems. It was a thing.

It was okay, Thorin. Peridot was pretty interested in Gems, too. It was kind of literally her job.

"I'm named after the Gem that I am," she corrected. "I'm cut 5XG from the Peridot facet, 2F5L. Gems don't get named after things."
