Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Gosh, the summer picnic was so much nicer--and warmer--than the spring one. There were tables and chairs set up in the sun and the shade, and more than enough food for everyone. Hopefully, everyone was up for socializing for a while!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Wait, you have your limb enhancers, you don't know the past... You've traveled in time!" Steven was aghast. "Oh no, have I said too much? I don't want to alter the past!"

He clasped his hands over his mouth.

Peridot was staring at you, Steven. Staring at you as though she thought maybe you had lost your mind.

More than before.

"What are you talking about?"

Steven had consumed too many shows and video games, really.

"I mean you're from the past!" Steven said. "You don't know what all is going to happen! But I do and if I say it, I could change it so I don't exist!"

There was another long pause, then.

"Keep talking."

Mean, Peridot.

"I can't!" Steven said. "I have to do my best not to say anything to change the past. It's the only way to make sure it works out for everybody until we figure out how to get you back."

Huh. Interesting.

"You... want to get me back?"

This was an unexpected development from the Steven.

"Well of course!" Steven said. "I mean, sure you're trying to contact Homeworld now but--" He slapped his hand over his mouth. "This is way harder than I thought."

Peridot gave a little hum at that. A very thoughtful little hum, indeed.

And then she shrugged her shoulders dismissively. Whatever the Steven thought he was hiding from her couldn't possibly be as important as her work with the Cluster, after all.

"Come to think of it, why are you talking to me at all? If the other Crystal Clods aren't here, I could be dangerous, you know."

Super dangerous, yep. Which she'd so aptly demonstrated by getting herself tied up in the first place.

That got Steven laughing. "That's a good one," he said. "You're like an angry slice of pie, it's still the cutest thing."

And now there was sputtering.

"You take that back!"

She was not cute! Those were fighting words!

"What are you gonna do, slap me?" Steven said, again forgetting she had her limb enhancers and was actually a legitimate threat.

There were guns in them thar arms, Steven. Don't push her too hard.

"I should, after what you and your friends did to the ship! I need that ship! It was a good ship!"

And sort of the only one she had. So.

"And what about what you're trying to do to the Earth?" Steven asked. "Because that's just as bad, you know. Or. You will know, once you let us know about it."

"What do you know about what I know about what we're doing to the Earth!?"

... That made sense if you squinted a little sideways at it.

"You aren't supposed to know about that!"

"Well, you already told me," Steven said. "So you might as well give up and be my friend now so we can skip all the kidnapping and fights and bubbling you. It'll just be nicer that way. Please?"

So much for not sharing the future, Steven.

Peridot hadn't actually seen that coming!

"You want to be friends with me?" What did that even mean?

Wait.

"Who bubbled me?!"

"Of course I do!" Steven said, choosing to avoid that second question for now. "You're one of only a few Gems I've ever met, and right now you're the only other Gem on this entire little island, and even though it's scary to be away from Garnet and Amethyst and Pearl and Dad and Connie, I'm going to make the best of it. And if that means being your friend whether you like it or not, well that's how it's going to be!"

Peridot wasn't getting out of this, was she?

She was still stranded, and escape didn't look like it was anywhere nearby, and...

"Fine," she said, finally, if only to get the Steven to stop being so pushy. "Fine, we're friends. What do friends do?"

She had even less experience with this than with rain, Steven. For the record.

"Well, for now, I guess that means we can hang out and... make music or play video games or help each other with schoolwork," Steven said. "And eventually there are things like parties, and pinky swears, and keeping secrets. But those are... advanced friendship stuff."

"... I don't think I'm ready for 'advanced friendship stuff' just yet," Peridot said, maybe a touch dryly. She was already concocting schemes for a daring escape to... somewhere. She'd figure out where eventually. "What are video games?"

This was a tragedy, right?

"You don't know about video games!?" Steven said like this was the most tragic, outrageous thing he'd ever heard.

"I really hope they have an arcade here. There's way more to video games than what I have in my backpack."

"An arcade," Peridot echoed. "Which is for video games."

She squinted at the Steven skeptically.

"Which are for what, exactly?"

"Fun?" Steven said, because what else would they possibly be for?

You were just getting a blank, kind of flat look now, Steven.

Fun?

Why?

"This is worse than I thought," Steven said, totally worried. "You don't even know what fun is!"
