Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Gosh, the summer picnic was so much nicer--and warmer--than the spring one. There were tables and chairs set up in the sun and the shade, and more than enough food for everyone. Hopefully, everyone was up for socializing for a while!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Yeah, Tip was still in the "meeting people from other universes" being weird stage. She grabbed a plate food -- a large plate of food -- and found a spot to tuck in and observe her new fellow classmates.

It was still so weird to see big, impressive, old architecture without giant holes in it.

Cassandra had returned sometime that morning. She did not look pleased - in fact, she was more of a frowning, glowering armored statue than she'd been at previous welcome picnics.

She'd only come back here to spend the last few months with Garik - and perhaps keep an eye on Merrill, though the elf largely seemed to be staying out of trouble ahahaha.

Like a month ago, Dante'd had these magnificent plans of pulling an Ezra or a Face and going shirtless at this particular newbie picnic. Instead, he was sitting in the shadow of a tree, legs outstretched, with a pounding headache.

He was only here for the free food.

And yeah, he was drinking water. Fucking Ada. (He thought, with hungover love.)

Right, so there'd been that locker, and the next thing Tali knew she'd been riding around in a pewter top hat, going around on a giant game board trying to pass go and collect $200 over and over again. The gist of the game had been fairly easy to grasp but there had been some weird house rules in effect and actually playing all the way through it had. Taken. Forever.

. . . and now here she was, wondering when exactly the island had moved, feeling mildly exasperated that she'd been gone long enough that it was welcome picnic time again, and really, really regretting buying Park Place.

"Is all of this food safe for humans to eat?" FN-2187 had to check. Sure, most people at the picnic seemed to be human, but this was a lot of food to just be lying around not portioned out! Maybe it wasn't all for them.

Aw. This one was like an attractive lost puppy or something. Which was apparently enough for Dante to drag himself out of hungover brain to throw him a casual, "If you trust the FDA, yep."

This was probably not as reassuring as he thought it'd be.

"FDA?" FN-2187 asked, trying to fit it int the kinds of things the First Order used acronyms for. First Destruction Auxiliary? No, that probably wouldn't have anything to do with food. "What's that?"

... You know, Dante didn't actually know what the acronym stood for, either. "The big guys who check to make sure the food is only this likely to try and kill us?" he ventured.

"Yeah, welcome to America," Dante said. He was grinning - less than he would have without the hangover, but eh, new kid. "Not from this country or not from this planet?"

"Planet," FN-2187 confirmed. "Wait, America? I though this planet was called Earth." Neither of which, he was almost certain, was the name he'd been given for where he was reassigned, but he'd pretty much concluded something had gone awry there by now.

Also, Earth was a seriously uncreative name for a planet.

"Country's the United States of America, planet's Earth," Dante specified.

He waved vaguely in the vague direction of the causeway. "Usually. I don't know what's up out there right now."

In FN-2187's head, this equated to the galactic government being the United States of America, because that made way more sense than multiple governments on the same planet. "Got it," he said, nodding, and then, "Right, so I'm totally not where I'm supposed to be at all." He didn't sound too concerned about it, though, possibly because this realization had been coming for hours now.

"Happens to the best of us." Dante snagged a burger off the spread 'cause it was there and he was getting to hit the stage where he was hungry. "But here's not so bad. Lots of free food and hot people."

Okay, the pertinent question would probably be so where are you supposed to be, but that answer could always be depressing.

It was super depressing! Even if FN-2187 didn't quite realize that. "It's just weird," he said, "because they seemed to be expecting me? They had a nametag with my designation and everything." He tapped his breastplate, where he'd stuck the tag that declared, Hello! My name is: FN-2187. It was going to be a bitch to get off.

Yeah, depressing was the furthest from what Dante wanted to deal with right now. Though at least this new kid seemed nice, so so far, he was calling this one a win.

"That happens too," Dante said. He shrugged. "I think half the people here just show up accidentally and the school always knows." He nodded at the name tag. "They usually go with names, not designations, though."

Maybe the guy really liked being a couple of letters and a string of numbers?

You were the first person to tell him that, Dante! You would probably not be the last. FN-2187 shrugged and said, "That's all they gave me, so what else would I be called?" Since he apparently didn't rate a nickname as far as his squadmates were concerned...

...he hoped they weren't going to get into trouble over his disappearance.

Yeah, Dante had decided fairly recently to stop giving a shit again. Getting involved in the small matter of this guy not having an actual name would be running right over that.

"I dunno," he said, "An actual name? I could call you Eighty-Seven, but that's still kinda weird."

Fuck it. He'd had a few years where no one but his cellmate called him anything other than Subject 64432B. He could spare like, a small percentage of fucks. A .something amount of fucks.
