Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Gosh, the summer picnic was so much nicer--and warmer--than the spring one. There were tables and chairs set up in the sun and the shade, and more than enough food for everyone. Hopefully, everyone was up for socializing for a while!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Is all of this food safe for humans to eat?" FN-2187 had to check. Sure, most people at the picnic seemed to be human, but this was a lot of food to just be lying around not portioned out! Maybe it wasn't all for them.

Aw. This one was like an attractive lost puppy or something. Which was apparently enough for Dante to drag himself out of hungover brain to throw him a casual, "If you trust the FDA, yep."

This was probably not as reassuring as he thought it'd be.

"FDA?" FN-2187 asked, trying to fit it int the kinds of things the First Order used acronyms for. First Destruction Auxiliary? No, that probably wouldn't have anything to do with food. "What's that?"

... You know, Dante didn't actually know what the acronym stood for, either. "The big guys who check to make sure the food is only this likely to try and kill us?" he ventured.

"Oh, so there's some acceptable risk involved." FN-2187 eyed the spread with renewed wariness.

"Yeah, welcome to America," Dante said. He was grinning - less than he would have without the hangover, but eh, new kid. "Not from this country or not from this planet?"

"Planet," FN-2187 confirmed. "Wait, America? I though this planet was called Earth." Neither of which, he was almost certain, was the name he'd been given for where he was reassigned, but he'd pretty much concluded something had gone awry there by now.

Also, Earth was a seriously uncreative name for a planet.

"Country's the United States of America, planet's Earth," Dante specified.

He waved vaguely in the vague direction of the causeway. "Usually. I don't know what's up out there right now."

In FN-2187's head, this equated to the galactic government being the United States of America, because that made way more sense than multiple governments on the same planet. "Got it," he said, nodding, and then, "Right, so I'm totally not where I'm supposed to be at all." He didn't sound too concerned about it, though, possibly because this realization had been coming for hours now.

"Happens to the best of us." Dante snagged a burger off the spread 'cause it was there and he was getting to hit the stage where he was hungry. "But here's not so bad. Lots of free food and hot people."

Okay, the pertinent question would probably be so where are you supposed to be, but that answer could always be depressing.

It was super depressing! Even if FN-2187 didn't quite realize that. "It's just weird," he said, "because they seemed to be expecting me? They had a nametag with my designation and everything." He tapped his breastplate, where he'd stuck the tag that declared, Hello! My name is: FN-2187. It was going to be a bitch to get off.

Yeah, depressing was the furthest from what Dante wanted to deal with right now. Though at least this new kid seemed nice, so so far, he was calling this one a win.

"That happens too," Dante said. He shrugged. "I think half the people here just show up accidentally and the school always knows." He nodded at the name tag. "They usually go with names, not designations, though."

"Well, this is all I got, so..." Yeah. Depressing.

Sigh. Ah, well. "You seriously have people calling you-- FN-2187?" Dante asked, blinking. "That's kind of fucked up."

Beat.

"Sorry."

Maybe the guy really liked being a couple of letters and a string of numbers?

Mara nodded. "Unless you have an allergy," she said. "What's your designation, soldier?"

FN-2187 straightened his shoulders and told her, "FN-2187, ma'am." It was right there on the helpful sticker on his breastplate!

He wondered if he should have kept his helmet instead of leaving it with the rest of his gear.

"It's nice to meet you, FN-2187," Mara said, nodding her head a little imperiously. "I'm Mara Jade. Why were you sent here?"

She thought her reports had been thorough...

FN-2187 looked a little lost. "I don't think I was supposed to be? Ma'am. I was reassigned for a new training module and I somehow wound up at the...I guess it was a shuttle port. And then here. But they seemed to be expecting me..." It was all very confusing.

Mara pursed her lips as she thought about it. "Sometimes that happens," she said. "Was this the new training module or were you diverted? It might be best to try to contact your supervisor to avoid punishments."

Because in her Empire, there were a lot of punishments...

"...I don't know," FN-2187 admitted. "They didn't give me any specifics." And, you know, they didn't approve of asking. "But you're right, I should definitely contact my supervisor to confirm my arrival at least." Good luck with that, kid.

"And record it," Mara said, nodding, "just in case it doesn't go through. We're in a different galaxy here, now, and communication can get spotty." She smiled. "I'm originally from Imperial Center."

Well, she still called it Imperial Center, so that was a good sign. FN-2187 nodded sagely, because her advice was sound. "We're in the United States of America," he said. "Right?"

"Right," Mara said, "and simultaneously docked up against an entirely different planet. The island can fly." She made a face. "Apparently. We learned that a few weeks ago. It's terrifically inconvenient."

"So the whole island is like a...like a space station? That's a biome?" FN-2187 tried to make sense of that.

Mara nodded. "From a planet that barely has space flight. I don't pretend to understand it."
