Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Picnic-ing in January - still not the best idea ever! But there were tables and chairs set up in the sun, and a nice bonfire going, and plenty of warm food for everyone to encourage socializing for as long as possible.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Sure, fire, whatever. Skaar barely noticed the elements. And he barely ate. Really, he was just hanging out as casually as a 7'-6" pile of hair and pale green muscles could. Suuuuuuper casual.

Ringo didn't do a double-take, but she did blink a couple of times. Then super-casually walked over toward the big guy. He had more than two feet on her.

"You're really tall," she observed. Brilliant!

"Yeah, it's one of my things," Skaar said. "I'm also pretty green." He was being social!

That pulled a laugh out of Ringo. "I was noticing that."

She grinned up at him, then remembered she hadn't introduced herself. "Oh, I'm Ringo Noyamano." She gave him a quick bow. "Nice to meet you!" And now she was sticking her hand out for shaking. Though given the height difference, she had to do so at nearly a 45-degree angle.

"I'm Skaar, Son of Hulk," Skaar said, reaching down to shake her hand with at least one or two of his fingers. "You probably figured out that I'm new."

"Well, I haven't seen you around before," she admitted with a grin that was all the wider for how ridiculous it was trying to shake his massive hand with her own tiny one. "So unless you're really sneaky, I figured you had to be new."

[identity profile] oldstrongest1.livejournal.com 2016-01-02 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm sneakier than you might think when I try," Skaar said. "But most of the time, I'm fairly easy to spot."
soniaroadsqueen: (seriously)

"I bet."

Ringo looked him up and down. "I hope they put a big enough bed in your dorm room."

"I've never really slept in a bed anyway. If I need to sleep on the floor, I can," Skaar said.

That was--that was a whole lot of casual going on over there. It was hard not to notice someone that big. Or that green.

For a moment, Kathy caught herself staring. Then with an internal lecture on rudeness, she headed over to say hello and welcome him to Fandom properly. She'd been raised with manners, dammit, whether she'd momentarily forgotten them or not.

"Hi," she said with a wave when she got within polite speaking distance. "I'm Kathy, welcome to Fandom!" Wow she felt tiny talking to him.

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2016]

[identity profile] oldstrongest1.livejournal.com 2016-01-03 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
That's because she was tiny compared to him. "I'm Skaar," Skaar said. He noticed the staring but he was used to that reaction. Usually it immediately preceded people running away or monsters rushing in to attack. He accepted anything other than those reactions - even continued staring - as reasonably polite.

"Thanks." Of course, having a loose definition of politeness didn't mean he had many good ways to start conversations. Most of his neighbors in the Savage Land were dinosaurs. "You're not one of the other new students, right?"

She was taller than Ringo, at least? So he was only almost two feet taller than she was, rather than more than that.

"I've been here for about three years now," she answered, giving him a smile. She didn't mind carrying the burden of making conversation. If nothing else, she owed it for the few moments of hardcore staring. "Senior now, arrived the summer before my sophomore year. Which is why I can tell you that pretty much whatever you've heard about the school is true. There's too much weirdness that does go on for anyone to bother making something up."

"Trust me, if there's anyone who has no reason to doubt that a place can be weird, it's me," Skaar said. "It's just a question of what kind of weird it is."

"Has your big sibling had a chance to explain stuff to you yet?" Kathy checked. "I don't want to go over old ground or anything, but if you have questions, I'm happy to answer them. I didn't get a new little sib this semester and I feel lost not having anyone to explain things to."

[No worries! I'm generally slow myself. GLAD YOU'RE HAVING A GOOD NEWBIE DAAAAY!]

"Did she mention the more, ahh, personal transformations?" Kathy asked. "Or the occasional visitors?"

Kathy took a minute to picture waking up to discover a child maybe a foot shorter than Skaar calling her Mommy and asking for breakfast.

Skaar answered the yes/no portion of the question in a way that was fully consistent with the sibling thread, which is currently in SP at the time of this ping and has not yet gotten into detail of some of those items. Once he had answered that portion appropriately, he continued, "What kind of transformations and visitors did you have in mind?"

Potentially for general knowledge, or perhaps to add to the previous examples which had not been written about yet.

Well hello there, large, green, and . . . large. There weren't quite enough odd colored folks around for Raven to pass up the opportunity to meet a new one. Especially one as apparently cold-impervious as she was.

"Hey," she greeted, resisting the urge to bulk up to match him. "I'm Raven. Welcome to Fandom."

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2016]

[identity profile] oldstrongest1.livejournal.com 2016-01-03 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
"Thanks," he said. If she had bulked up, he might have briefly confused Raven for a rare blue Hulk. Rick Jones wouldn't have been alone in that color! "I'm Skaar. There aren't a lot of people our colors around here, are there?"

"There've been a few of us over the years, mostly light blue or grey. Is green the standard where you're from?"

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2016]

[identity profile] oldstrongest1.livejournal.com 2016-01-03 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
"It's more of a family thing," Skaar said. "My father is green, my mother was grey. Most people from my Earth are your traditional Earther colors."

"Earther," Raven said. "I like that. I never met anyone who looked anything like me until I came here. It's still always nice to see someone else who comes in the exciting colors."

"It's the term that gets thrown around the galaxy for Earth people," Skaar explained. Because he was half-alien, too. He was cultured. "And you would have enjoyed my family trips. We had a red woman and a blue guy, too. We stood out in a crowd." As if the size alone wasn't enough for that.

"It must be nice, standing out in a group," Raven said wistfully. "I've always been better at blending in. But that gets tiring."

"Am I missing something? You might stand out better than me," Skaar said, because she was a really hot blue girl and he was a boy who couldn't help but notice that. He might have been a gamma-powered space barbarian, but he had some traditional weaknesses.
