Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Picnic-ing in January - still not the best idea ever! But there were tables and chairs set up in the sun, and a nice bonfire going, and plenty of warm food for everyone to encourage socializing for as long as possible.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Well hello there, large, green, and . . . large. There weren't quite enough odd colored folks around for Raven to pass up the opportunity to meet a new one. Especially one as apparently cold-impervious as she was.

"Hey," she greeted, resisting the urge to bulk up to match him. "I'm Raven. Welcome to Fandom."

"Thanks," he said. If she had bulked up, he might have briefly confused Raven for a rare blue Hulk. Rick Jones wouldn't have been alone in that color! "I'm Skaar. There aren't a lot of people our colors around here, are there?"

"There've been a few of us over the years, mostly light blue or grey. Is green the standard where you're from?"

"It's more of a family thing," Skaar said. "My father is green, my mother was grey. Most people from my Earth are your traditional Earther colors."

"Earther," Raven said. "I like that. I never met anyone who looked anything like me until I came here. It's still always nice to see someone else who comes in the exciting colors."

"It's the term that gets thrown around the galaxy for Earth people," Skaar explained. Because he was half-alien, too. He was cultured. "And you would have enjoyed my family trips. We had a red woman and a blue guy, too. We stood out in a crowd." As if the size alone wasn't enough for that.

"It must be nice, standing out in a group," Raven said wistfully. "I've always been better at blending in. But that gets tiring."

"Am I missing something? You might stand out better than me," Skaar said, because she was a really hot blue girl and he was a boy who couldn't help but notice that. He might have been a gamma-powered space barbarian, but he had some traditional weaknesses.

Raven laughed. "I'm not bigger than a line-backer," she pointed out. "But I do have an extra advantage in the blending in department. I'm a shapeshifter. The sort who can look however she pleases, so long as I'm willing to put in the effort."

"And this is what you look like naturally?" Skaar checked.

"Except for the clothes," Raven confirmed, and leaned in -- and grew a few inches -- to whisper conspiratorily: "I don't much like them, so in public I just pretend I have them on."

"That's... practical," Skaar said. His brain was more used to dealing with war and throwing dinosaurs and supervillain intrigue than girls, so that comment was something to process. "The elements don't phase me, so the loincloth is more for other people's comfort." Was this bonding? Was he awkwardly flirting? Was he just saying random words? Skaar wasn't entirely sure.

"See? And I bet a loin cloth doesn't get in the way when you need to do . . . your thing." She was guessing that was fighting, but she wasn't going to assume. "Totally practical."

She was definitely flirting. But she did that a lot, so.

"Monsters usually try to rip my head off or heart out, so anything else I wore would get torn to shreds anyway," Skaar said in agreement. Monster violence! A subject he was a little more comfortable with! "I don't have any interest in dealing with torn clothes all the time."

"Monster hunter, huh? I bet you're pretty good at it, too." How many monsters could he just kind of step on, after all? "You'll still get to do some monster hunting around here. But usually only on special occasions."

Invasions totally counted as special.

"More of a monster fighter these days. I don't usually have to look for them because they'll come to me," Skaar explained. "Sorry if that causes any issues here. I'll clean them up quickly."

"They might not actually find you here," Raven said. "This island is on some sort of . . . separate time stream or something. But when you go to the mainland, all bets'll be off. One of my roommates' boyfriends gets stalked by demons, but as far as I know they only came after him here the one time."

Ignore the choking and wheezing noises coming from over here, Raven. Your roommate was just rapidly turning interesting colors, that was fine.

Oh and deciding what to do with your souvenirs from Japan since you clearly weren't getting them.

"Do her other boyfriends have things coming after them, too? If so, I know who I need to make friends with if I want to get some battles in," Skaar considered.

"I don't know," Raven said. "She's a crimefighter, though, so I bet she knows lots of people who could help you out if you get bored."

"I'll keep that in mind. Who's your roommate?" Skaar checked.

"Kathy Li." Raven looked around and pointed her out. "She looks all cute and nice, but she can kick some serious ass when she wants to."

"I get the impression that's true of a lot of people here," Skaar noted. "I met her a little earlier. She didn't seem the type. That's probably the point if she's a costume, though."

"A costume. You mean like she has a secret identity?" Sorry, Skaar, Raven's world hadn't progressed that far into superhero culture yet.

"Yeah. Most of them I've met do. And even if they don't, they still usually wear masks. I couldn't tell you why," Skaar said.
