Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Okay, admittedly, having a picnic at the beginning of January wasn't the best idea the school had ever come up with. Thankfully, the weather was sort of agreeable today - it wasn't too chilly, the sun was out, and there were still pretty pockets of unmelted snow on the lawn.

In the middle of the lawn, a bonfire had been set up for warmth and light--mostly the warmth--and the tables and chairs had been set out to mostly be in the sun. There was a long table with a variety of moddable warm foods, and there was the usual table of nametags and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything set up, it was time to welcome the new folks!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

With a flash of blue light and the taste of peppermint and pine needles lingering on her lips, Velma appeared on the lawn outside of the school. "Nice and subtle," she muttered.

Traveling by Jackie's magic mirror might have been less ostentatious than arriving in Santa's sleigh or on the Princess's magic carpet, but it was a flashier entrance than Velma would have liked to make. It was her first day of attending a normal school since sixth grade and she'd been hoping to keep a low profile. So much for that.

Slinking over to one of the tables, she eventually found her nametag and stuck it on her chest. She would have found it sooner, but she'd been looking for one that read Velveteen rather than Velma. Weird. She hadn't been out in public under her real name since the sixth grade, either.

Eric, meanwhile, had arrived back in Fandom from Georgia late last night via the far more conventional Portalocity portal. But that wasn't important. What was important was the fact that he was looking for Velma! And also carrying a picnic basket labelled "Fandom High Welcome Kit" in gold and blue glitter.

"There you are!" he said, once he spotted Velma. "Eric Bittle, I'm your school assigned sibling, I'm so pleased to meet you!"

Velma had a lot of questions. Like why were they on the grounds of a castle and who thought outdoor picnics in January were a good idea. But the one that was currently winning the needed to be asked race was,

"Say what?"

If nothing else, Eric looked to be a few years younger than Velma.

Oh my god Velma he was only a year younger than you. He wasn't that short.

(He was absolutely that short, hence why Eggsy had saddled him with 'Bitty')

"It's my job to welcome you to Fandom, help you get the lay of the land, answer any questions you may have about this place, etcetera," Eric explained. "Also, I brought something for you!" he held out the picnic basket, gesturing for her to take it.

Inside, she'd find a half-dozen mini-pies of various flavours, a Fandom High Gremlins t-shirt and pennant (that the school did not seem to have any sort of actual sports teams wasn't the point), a town directory, a separate directory of just the eating establishments, and of course, two small containers of glitter in colours that matched those that adorned the outside of the basket.

It had been a strange arrival to a strange place, and it had left Lucille more unsettled than she would like to admit. Added to this, she was cold; her winter coat, it had turned out, had suffered a severe attack during the past year, and was not in a state fit to wear. At least cold was something she was used to, but after picking up her nametag and looked through the lists she kept close to the bonfire.

So, she had been assigned a big sibling. Why she would need one was a mystery, but she wasn't going to object.

Jalian d'Arsenette y ken Selvren was a strange name, however. It must be foreign. Perhaps she would at least be able to answer a few questions Lucille had, like the shimmering portal through which she had arrived, and why the people here were wearing the oddest clothes.

Jalian showed up, found her name tag, and started looking for her sibling. She was dressed in nearly-white jeans and a pale silver blouse, and had even thrown on a white leather jacket in slight deference to the weather. It all set off her hair and eyes nicely. It probably made her look a bit more alien, but honestly, she was far from the oddest thing in Fandom, so she considered herself a fairly gentle introduction.

She probably had a somewhat skewed definition of "gentle".

It took her some time to find the girl, squinting against the light from the fire, but then she nodded and stepped up, offering her hand in the current custom. "You are Lucille. I'm Jalian."

Lucille gave her a surprised look, trying to take make sense of Jalian's appearance and rather direct greeting. Foreign, Lucille decided. Definitely foreign.

She managed a rather tense smile as she shook Jalian's hand. "I am. It's a pleasure to meet you, miss Jalian."

"Direct" might as well have been Jalian's middle name.

She waved off the address. "Only Jalian. You prefer 'Miss Lucille'?"

Her tribe would be shocked she knew how to be polite. The things she'd learned in Fandom!

Skaar was built on family drama! Don't tell him what to do!

Anyway, Skaar put on his nametag which gave the full designation, "Skaar, Son of Hulk." Then he waited. He didn't know what an Ada Miller looked like, so he figured it would be easier for her to find him. Because even if you didn't know what "Skaar, Son of Hulk" looked like, you could probably put two and two together.

"Well now, you're nice an' easy to find," a cheerful voice informed him, and Ada looked him over, rather unphased by the green and the tall. "H'llo, 'm Ada."

"Skaar. But you figured that out already," Skaar said. "What does a 'Big Sibling' do here?"

In his experience, big siblings trapped their evil twin brothers in planetoids in order to protect the Earth. He was pretty sure that wasn't the case here.

Look, he was tall and green. Ada was pretty sure he was already open to the idea of Weirdness.

While Frank waited to meet this Laura person he was supposed to boss around or whatever the goal of the sibling program was, he prepared a couple of drinks. After drinking them both, he prepared another one for his new little sib.

You couldn't say he wasn't thoughtful. Well, you could, but you would potentially be wrong.

Laura missed Frank a few times, mostly because she kept skirting around the increasingly strong smell of alcohol in the vicinity. Only after scouring the rest of the picnic she decided to venture into it.

Wearing her name tag, it wouldn't be too long until Frank noticed her.

Laura didn't know Frank. He wasn't good at noticing people. But he was good at noticing when somebody needed a drink, and as far as he was concerned, his little sib needed a drink. So it all worked out.

"You look like you need a drink," Frank said. "So I guess that makes you Laura. And the nametag would confirm it! I'm Frank."

Being offered a drink in the first minute of knowing him did tell Laura a good deal of things. Even Wolverine was more adamant to throw booze at her. Not that much, but he still tried to kept it her choice.

"I do not." But everything else checked out, so. "Are you of drinking age?" Did he at least have a healing factor so she didn't have to worry about his liver?

Rey had not expected to be here. One moment she was looking through a ship, and the next she was some confused girl in a mask with a bo strapped to her back in the middle of... what was this, anyway?

Well, at least Rey had that sort of lost look that often indicated new people. So when Ringo looked around and didn't find anyone wearing a nametag that said "Rey" (and was that a boy's or a girl's name? what country was it from anyway?), her backup plan of "approach everyone who looked new and find out if they were Rey" wouldn't take too long.

So there was a short Japanese girl with her hair in pigtails and a big smile walking around asking: "Hey, I know this is kind of an odd question, but are you Rey?"

"Oh." Ringo looked a bit relieved at the implicit yes, but still pushed her shoulders back a bit to make her nametag easier to see. Then she pointed at it for good measure. "I'm Ringo Noyamano."

Which, you know, was the answer to Rey's question, but probably didn't actually answer any of Rey's questions.

Raven had her mimicked name tag prominently placed, and she scanned the crowd, checking out all the new students and trying not to guess which one might be her new little sib. Sure, you always ended up with a mental image from a name, but she knew as well as anyone that that was pretty meaningless.

Having a name tag was a little strange to Raven -- everyone knew everyone at Ever After High, and here she was a stranger. But that was the point.

She stuck her name tag on and looked around for her assigned Big Sibling until she spotted someone with the same name. "Hi, Raven!" she said when she saw her blonde counterpart. "I'm Raven. Did they put us together because we have the same name?"
