Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Okay, admittedly, having a picnic at the beginning of January wasn't the best idea the school had ever come up with. Thankfully, the weather was sort of agreeable today - it wasn't too chilly, the sun was out, and there were still pretty pockets of unmelted snow on the lawn.

In the middle of the lawn, a bonfire had been set up for warmth and light--mostly the warmth--and the tables and chairs had been set out to mostly be in the sun. There was a long table with a variety of ~~moddable~~ warm foods, and there was the usual table of nametags and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything set up, it was time to welcome the new folks!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Rey had not expected to be here. One moment she was looking through a ship, and the next she was some confused girl in a mask with a bo strapped to her back in the middle of... what was this, anyway?

So... have fun with that, big sibling!

Well, at least Rey had that sort of lost look that often indicated new people. So when Ringo looked around and didn't find anyone wearing a nametag that said "Rey" (and was that a boy's or a girl's name? what country was it from anyway?), her backup plan of "approach everyone who looked new and find out if they were Rey" wouldn't take too long.

So there was a short Japanese girl with her hair in pigtails and a big smile walking around asking: "Hey, I know this is kind of an odd question, but are you Rey?"

"Who's asking?"

Which was absolutely always a yes, let's be real.

"Oh." Ringo looked a bit relieved at the implicit yes, but still pushed her shoulders back a bit to make her nametag easier to see. Then she pointed at it for good measure. "I'm Ringo Noyamano."

Which, you know, was the answer to Rey's question, but probably didn't actually answer any of Rey's questions.

"...Right. Where is this?" Rey asked. "And why is it cold?"

She was used to desert-at-night cold, she had no idea what to do with this.

"This is Fandom, and it's cold because it's winter?" Ringo looked Rey up and down.

"You really, really weren't expecting to be here, were you?" Like, not just the usual surprised at Fandom being so weird.

"I was on Jakku literally a minute ago," Rey said, of course assuming she was somewhere that would know that planet.

Ringo made a little apologetic face. "Sorry, I've never heard of Jakku." And there was a helpless shrug. "So you're probably not anywhere close to it at the moment?"

"How would I not be anywhere close to it? And I don't even know what a Fandom is," she said. Her head was just going to hurt by the end of the day.

"Fandom is the name of this island. And also of the town on the island, and the school in town." So that wasn't confusing at all!

"And the fact that I got assigned to help you settle in means that you're enrolled in that school." So, you know, congrats on that, Rey.

"I can't be enrolled in school," Rey said firmly. "I have to get back to Jakku before long." Like, immediately.

Ringo winced slightly. "That, er, might not be the easiest thing to do." She sounded apologetic. "I mean, I can help you try, but you might be stuck here for a while."

A lot of Ringo's usual smile had faded by this point. She didn't like the idea of Rey being stuck against her will.

Rey shook her head. "I can't be stuck. I have to get back. What do I need to do to try?"

Ringo reached into her pocket for her cell phone. "I'd start with Portalocity to see if they can do it?" She looked apologetic. "They're kind of hard to deal with," hello there, understatement, "but if they can't do it, I don't imagine anyone else will be able to either."

"Someone or something has to be able to," Rey said, because girl was above all else an optimist. "I got here in the first place, didn't I?"

"Yeah, but, um, sometimes Fandom does things that don't really make sense." Ringo didn't want Rey getting her hopes up too much. "You said you were from Jakku?" she asked. "How do you spell that?"

She was pulling up Portalocity's (practically unusable) website on her phone.

Rey spelled it out, and had to ask, "What are you doing with that?"

It would not be long before she was getting and jailbreaking a phone of her own.

"Checking the Portalocity website," Ringo answered.

Then blinked, looking up, and smiled in embarrassment. "I'm guessing that doesn't mean anything to you." She turned, holding the phone up so that Rey could see it.

"It's a touch-screen that's connected wirelessly to a global information system, so I can access all sorts of stuff with it."

...Maybe the HoloNet existed here? Who knew.

"That's handy," she decided. "And this Portalocity is responsible?"

It might be. Again, who knew.

"Well, I don't know if anyone would ever call them 'responsible', but they are the only real option for travel to a lot of places. And like I said: if they can't get you somewhere, chances are nowhere can."

She frowned. "I'm not seeing any available times to travel to Jakku, though."

"Maybe it just isn't on there," Rey said. "I might be able to get to another planet and find a way back to Jakku."

She was in for a very long and confusing process that was sure to give Portalocity workers a headache.

"I, um, don't think so? Portalocity maintains a universal database? I think? Um, you could ask, though?"

"But, er, you might want to get settled in for at least a day or two? In case it takes time to get it ironed out?" Or didn't get ironed out at all?

"I don't know that I have that long." If she had to wait a day she probably wouldn't handle it well. "Is there anywhere I can go for this Portalocity?"

"Well, they have offices, but it might be easier to try calling them first?" Which probably wouldn't actually be helpful, but might be less confusing than trying to do anything in person?

"And you should at least get some food before trying to deal with them."

"I don't have any money," Rey said, which was probably dumb of her if she ended up having to steal some.
