Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Okay, admittedly, having a picnic at the beginning of January wasn't the best idea the school had ever come up with. Thankfully, the weather was sort of agreeable today - it wasn't too chilly, the sun was out, and there were still pretty pockets of unmelted snow on the lawn.

In the middle of the lawn, a bonfire had been set up for warmth and light--mostly the warmth--and the tables and chairs had been set out to mostly be in the sun. There was a long table with a variety of ~~moddable~~ warm foods, and there was the usual table of nametags and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything set up, it was time to welcome the new folks!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"I dunno what half those words mean, but I'll take your word for it," Ada said with a shrug. "School's on some sort of nexus an' there's people from different places and worlds. The island is alive? Or somewhat smart? Something like that. And I swear half the people here have super-powers or magic but not a lick of sense."

"I been here since summer started, and I've been kidnapped by aliens once and had evil Christmas demons show up to try and drive us all mad."

"It sure sounds like a place I'd end up. At least I'm keeping things consistent," Skaar said.

"This is consistent? I'm starting to feel like I had a normal and boring childhood, and I was raised by a carnival," Ada sighed. "Well, good, at least this means you won't go into shock and try to hide under your bed next time we get invaded by somethin.'"

"There are invasions?" Skaar asked, actually showing a smile. "What kind of invasions?" Hopefully invasions he could smash.

"The aliens and demons, of course, and I guess it happens pretty regular that somethin' comes in thinkin' to take over, until it gets punched in the face enough that it goes running," she replied. "Us being on a 'multidimensional nexus' or whatever makes it prime real estate."

"The radio station the squirrels run archives all its broadcasts, so if you got a computer or a fancy phone, you can listen back a couple years or something."

"Maybe it won't be so bad here after all. I'm really good at punching things in the face," Skaar said. "Wait. Did you say squirrels run the radio?"

"Yeah, an' they're up in everyone's business," Ada said, making a face. "You can generally bribe 'em with rum, or so I hear."

"Oh, and there's little green things, about so tall?" she said, holding her hand off the ground. "School mascot, apparently. Not near as friendly as you. They live in the ducts and crannies, and their bite causes you to think you're someone else and do funny things."

"Is it a magic bite or a venomous bite?" Skaar checked. "I resist poisons well. It would probably burn out of my system fast."

"No idea, no plans to find out," Ada laughed. "Though if you decide to experiment, let me know. I'll make sure you don't try to run off and become a lounge singer or something totally silly."

She'd probably film it, but that's what Big Siblings were supposed to do, right?

"I appreciate it," Skaar said. He didn't believe that she'd help him on that one for a second. He didn't consider the filming, just the watching and enjoying. "Is there anything else I should know about now?"

"It gets cold, and wet, and snows," which he probably already noticed, "-- and hot in the summer. Sometimes it rains candy, and two weeks ago the pipes only gave us eggnog or something instead of water, which was really unfortunate if you tried to take a shower."

Ada gave a shrug. "If it's weird, it's probably going to happen. As far as I can figure out, anyway."

"The elements don't affect me. The other things... Those may be strange," Skaar decided.
