Deception for Fun and Profit, Monday, Period 2

Bond had set set up a class room with the tables dragged out to the walls and the chairs set up in a circle in the empty space. As the students arrived he directed them to take a seat.

"Good morning," he said, once they'd all arrived. "I'm Professor Bond, and this is Deception for Fun and Profit. Now, assuming there were no paperwork errors, you're all in this class because for whatever reason you have an interest in fooling people, which means for our first class we're going to do the traditional introductions a bit differently.

"Normally this is the part were I'd ask you for your names, classes, and various other questions, usually why you're taking the class, or what experience you have related to the subject at hand. No, I'm still going to do that, but you're going to lie, then the rest of the class and I will attempt to catch you out. Though given everyone but me will be lying, I expect you to do it subtly, so as not to open yourself to counter-accusations."

He pointed at a random student. "You first. Name, class, what you did over the summer, and how you ended up in this class."

Eggsy gave the teacher a moderately suspicious look for the class subject, but hey. This could be fun.

And at the rate he was running into fellow expats, they could start a club.

"M'name's Eggsy. I'm a senior," he started. "I spent my summer at camp and I signed up for the class. How else do you get in?"

"You'd be surprised," Bond said mildly. "So you spent the summer at camp?"

He was basically genetically predispositioned to be a complete shit to anyone of a higher class than him. It was a thing.

"Britain, yeah. What? Don't I seem the type for it?"

Bond could understand the feeling, even if he had a smaller range of people to be shirty at.

"I certainly didn't mean to imply that," he said. "But you certainly don't seemed to have enjoyed it, given the glowing description."

"Can't say I fit in there." They camp that he totally went to.

"Hey, I'm Cosima," Cosima said with a little wave. "I spent my summer here" --she figured half the room knew that, so it was hard to lie about -- "but I just got back from visiting my folks in Oregon."

That was also true except the Oregon part.

"And I don't know how I ended up here. I don't like liars."

This was true, but it was exactly why she had taken the class; she wanted to stop being gullible, and learning to lie herself seemed like a solid step on that path.

"You know," Cosima shrugged. stalling a bit. "It was okay. Rainy. Lots of hipsters."

"Not really," Cosima said crinkling her nose in thought. "I talked to people from my old school, but it gets a lot harder to talk to normal people after being here."

"Yeah, all my life," Cosima confirmed. "We're from Eugene."

"Ada Miller, junior, and I spent the summer here," Ada said easily, perfectly at home as the little liar she was. "I suppose my mother or uncle signed me up."

That would require Marti to remember she had a daughter, and Chester would laugh his ass off if someone told him Ada needed a class on lying.

"Professional development," Ada deadpaned, reaching back to brush her hair behind her ear...and producing a half-dollar between her fingers before making it vanish again. "I'm a barker and scout for the Miller Family Carnival."

"A dishonest carnival doesn't stay in business long," Ada replied, all wide-eyed innocence. "Word of mouth makes or breaks our reputation, and we want people to remember us fondly."

That wasn't a yes on telling the truth. At all.

Mara beamed at Professor Bond again. "Hello, I'm Mara Jade. I'm a sophomore now and I was in my home galaxy on a cultural exchange program in the Mid-Rim sector. I think my guardian must have mistaken this class for cooking or something. He's getting older and it's harder for him to read now."

Uh huh.
