Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were tables and chairs set up all around the lawn. Some were in the sun, where folks could work on their tan while they ate, and some were in the shade where folks could stay cool and non-crispy.

All of the tables had some blue and gold glitter scattered across them, because there was always enough to go around. This school certainly was blesesed in all the right ways.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Aaaaand off we go!

Please don't mind the pink pony busily scarfing down cupcakes by the food table. She was making sure there were still plenty for everypony else! Mostly by pulling more brightly decorated cupcakes out of a seemingly bottomless saddle bag when the plate started to look empty.

Lottie had not quite felt qualified yet to take on big sister-hood on her own -- even fake big sisterhood through a school program -- so she was out in the general crowd, sitting inappropriately on the top of a picnic table, feet swinging in the air, while Pepper investigated a stick underneath it. She was using her keen mystery solving skills to determine what cliques any newly arriving students would belong to.

"American schools are meant to have cheerleadin cliques, I think," she remarked to Pepper. "Do they have cheerleadin here? Or sports in gen'ral?"

Once her sibling program duties were taken care of, Raven made her way to a nice sunny spot and shifted into something a little more revealing. Since she'd promised Kathy solidarity, and all.

Besides, it was much easier to convince the new boys to remove their shirts if you were willing to show some skin as well.

"Not that I've ever seen," Kathy said, smiling at her little sister from across the table. "Not even a swim team for the pool in the basement of the dorms."

"Hmm," Lottie said. "My research into the American school system says that means the school must be entirely made up of NERD CLIQUES."

Her research amounted to a fairly random selection of Hollywood teen movies, yes.

Staying in the shade wasn't even an option. At times, Kathy was a California girl through and through, and the last major school event before it started getting chilly was definitely one of those times. Kathy was determined to stay out in the sunshine for as long as possible. Granted, she was going to end up with some ridiculous tan lines because of it, but that's why sunblock was invented.

After filling up a plate with more food than was reasonable, Kathy picked out a decent spot to nosh and wave to people.

"Well, you've met me, so you're probably not wrong," Kathy said with a laugh. "But you might not want to get all your information from an industry that sees nothing wrong with casting thirty-year-olds as sophomores or whatever."

Yeah, Kathy had a fair idea of how Lottie was doing her 'research.'

"A fair and valid point well made," Lottie said. "I suppose I still have much to learn about your American ways."

"And this really isn't the best school to attend to learn about American high schools and their culture," Kathy conceded.

Not with aliens and time-travelers and ponies about.

"So it's probably only slightly less helpful than most movies on the topic."

"Those parts seemed pretty normal to me."

Lottie's homeworld was not like other homeworlds.

"Okay, my world has crime-fighting superheroes and it's still less weird than yours," Kathy said, shaking her head. She also held her hand out to Pepper to sniff, because puppy. That was hardly a puppy, but so what? "And LA is generally considered weird on its own merits."

No Portland, of course, with its unicycle-riding men in costumes, but still pretty bizarre.

Pepper, a fully grown little black fluffy mutt, was MORE THAN PLEASED to be considered a puppy.

Lottie shrugged. "Once you've seen a giant hope-eatin walnut hoverin over the estate, nothing really seems strange anymore."

"Why was there a giant hope-eating walnut hovering over the estate?" Kathy asked, knowing she probably shouldn't and yet unable to let that go. "Walnuts aren't known for...most of those things."

"Because the newspaper man got hisself possessed by a Polish folk spirit whose natural form is a giant walnut." Lottie gave a little shrug that was either despairing about Polish folklore or newspaper employees. It was hard to tell.

"Okay, so all those words made sense individually," Kathy said. "It's just the order you put them in. Let's back up. Polish folk spirits are usually giant walnuts?"

In fairness, Eastern European mythology was not a topic she knew a lot about. But she thought she would have heard something about giant walnuts in between all the stories about Vasilisa, Ivan, and Baba Yaga.

So not only was nobody going to throw him out, somebody had actually gotten Dante a place to crash. He'd be happily confused about it if he didn't suspect something more was going on.

But you know what?

He was still exhausted off of healing his injuries from the last place he'd been staying at, the weather was nice, and there was free food. He'd deal with whatever was trying to screw with him later, when it tried to screw with him.

He grabbed a giant plate full of burgers, took off his coat and put it aside, and stretched out against a tree in the sun. Not bad.

"Well, this one was. I've only met the one."

Xanthippe was uncomfortable with just about all of this. And when Xanthippe was uncomfortable, she tended to get annoyed.

So she ignored the food, and found a tree to sit underneath. With her phone in her hands because of course.

"Well, that's...something? I guess?" Kathy had no idea what to make of that. None. "So why did it possess the newspaper man?"

Somewhere, in a tucked-away corner of the park, hidden from view, a portal appeared.

It did not remain long: just long enough to spit out a harried-looking Cassandra in full armor. She stumbled, but did not fall; once she had righted herself, she reached up and took off the helmet.

Well. At least this had worked.

It was sunny. There was food.

And so there was an Edward, draped over the branch of a tree, a hamburger in his hands. He had little to complain about.

You know what, if Dante was going to be on some weird island with free room and board and probably something screwed up going on behind the scenes he was going to have to deal with sooner rather than later, he was at least going to make an effort to enjoy himself.

Or enjoy the view, in this case.

Was he shamelessly squinting over at Kathy to see how much skin he could catch under that shirt? Maybe. Maybe.

Was that... some kind of demon?

It almost had to be.

For a brief moment, energy coalesced near Dante's back as he thought about bringing Rebellion out... and then realized all the demon was doing was eating cupcakes.

"Now there's something you don't see every day," he said, raising an eyebrow at the thing. From afar.
