Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were tables and chairs set up all around the lawn. Some were in the sun, where folks could work on their tan while they ate, and some were in the shade where folks could stay cool and non-crispy.

All of the tables had some blue and gold glitter scattered across them, because there was always enough to go around. This school certainly was blesesed in all the right ways.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Staying in the shade wasn't even an option. At times, Kathy was a California girl through and through, and the last major school event before it started getting chilly was definitely one of those times. Kathy was determined to stay out in the sunshine for as long as possible. Granted, she was going to end up with some ridiculous tan lines because of it, but that's why sunblock was invented.

After filling up a plate with more food than was reasonable, Kathy picked out a decent spot to nosh and wave to people.

You know what, if Dante was going to be on some weird island with free room and board and probably something screwed up going on behind the scenes he was going to have to deal with sooner rather than later, he was at least going to make an effort to enjoy himself.

Or enjoy the view, in this case.

Was he shamelessly squinting over at Kathy to see how much skin he could catch under that shirt? Maybe. Maybe.

And was Kathy going to catch him squinting and blush, silently cursing her roommate? Hell yes.

"You know, most people say hello or something," she called over to the newbie. She was a superhero, dammit. And a senior. And had two years of this crazy island under her belt. Her currently non-existent belt, but this was all metaphor anyway. Point was, she wasn't going to stay quiet and blush just cause some guy was looking at her. "Greetings not big where you're from?"

Not when she could say something, blush, and plot Raven's demise. Much better plan.

Not particularly, no, unless they happened at sword-point. Still, Dante wasn't going to do something like be embarrassed at being caught looking. That was half the fun, right?

"Maybe I'm just window shopping," Dante called. "It's a free country, right?"

Had none of the guys at this school been acquainted with shame? Did they all get a shame-ectomy before hopping on the shuttle?

"Maybe you mistook me for something for sale," she snarked back, leaning back on her hands to eyeball him just as baldly. How did he like it, huh?

Dante put his arms behind his head against the trunk of the tree, just so she could get a better look. "Hey, maybe I just liked the-- dress? Is that a dress?"

Well that had spectacularly backfired. But now she couldn't immediately look away, because then he'd win. Why did she even try sometimes? Why?

"I don't think it'll fit you," she said, ignoring his question. Because she was not admitting all of the stupid reasons she'd decided that she needed to wear an over-sized mesh shirt over a swimsuit. "But I'm sure you'd look lovely in it otherwise."

You just keep trying, Kathy.

Dipper had been on his way to sit and munch o. The two plates of food which he had precariously balanced in his two hand when he spotted Kathy in her... Outfit.

Somewhat distracted he had tripped over his own feet and spent the next thirty seconds doing his best not to fall down or drop his food. Finally able to maintain his balance and equilibrium, Dipper was now squarely in front of Kathy and feeling like a total dork.

"Oh. Uh. Hi Kathy! Nice weather we're having, huh?"

Maybe she'd ignore what just happened by his brilliant small talk.

Kathy probably hadn't helped matters by shooting up to her feet, ready to catch Dipper and his plates of food if he'd lost the battle with gravity.

"It really is," she said, more than willing to be distracted by small talk if it kept him from being embarrassed. Kathy understood that feel. "I love summer. It's been three years now and I'm still not used to East Coast winters."

She sat back down and patted the grass nearby in case he felt like doing the same.

Dipper froze for a second. She was asking him to sit down? He gulped nervously and some how's aged to sit with his plates of food balanced in each hand. "Oh, yeah," he replied. "East coast winters are the worst. Give me California and its droughts and sunny weather I say!"

You know, if he'd asked, Kathy would have happily taken one of his plates from him. Or possibly even both!

"You're from California, too?" she asked, beaming at him. "How did I not know that? Which part?"

"Piedmont," Dipper replied with a shrug. "It's not that exiting. How about you?"

"LA," Kathy said, holding up a hand for a high five anyway. Because California pride, that was why. "It is that exciting, but only because I averaged seeing about three drug deals on the bus ride to school every day."

The Seventeens had taken Koreatown by force and weren't keen on giving up their stranglehold on the district.

"Wooow, someone's feeling brave today. Or really hot," Kira said as she looked Kathy over. "Are you trying to get the guys to lose their shirts?"

"It's pretty much the last time I'll be able to convince a class of boys to run around shirtless," Kathy pointed out. "It'll be too cold in January and I'm not sure how long I'll be staying this summer."

She glanced up at Kira from under her lashes. "Is it really bold?" she asked. "I told Raven I should wear shorts, too."

Ack! Self-consciousness attack!

"You should feel free to change into your swimsuit and join me," Kathy urged for completely non-selfish reasons, really.

Okay, she was certain that no one else here would mind if Kira was in a suit, so it really was (somewhat) unselfish! See? You were welcome, Fandom!

Kira blushed furiously and shook her head. "Maybe next summer. We'll see if I can get some bravery before then."

Kathy held out her pinky, as it was clearly the instrument of the most binding of promises. "We both do this in May?" she suggested. "It'll be my last picnic, so if we're gonna be awesome in bikinis together, it's gotta be then."

Kathy didn't care how committed Raven was to the topless tradition. There was no way she was going to wear this getup in January.

"Trust me, it's way easier to be brave with friends around."

"I hope you brought enough sunblock," Ringo teased when she spotted Kathy. "I might need to borrow some."

Because maybe that teasing would hide the way she was kind of staring through her eyelashes.

And maybe her slight flush would just be attributed to the heat of the day and not the fact that Raven had convinced her to dress for the occasion, too.

"Ringo!" Kathy said, delighted to see someone else in a swimsuit. "You look so good! And I love that color on you!"

And she didn't even have a color preference for it the way Raven did!

"Did you just decide to wear a suit today? Or did my devious roommate catch you, too?"

"Thanks," Ringo giggled. "And she may have had something to do with it?"

She glanced up at Kathy, then her eyes jerked away again with a blush.

"And, um, yeah, it's a really nice color, isn't it?" That was a safe topic, after all, right?

"Of course she had something to do with it, she's Raven," Kathy said with fond exasperation. "Why do you think I'm in this?" The oversized shirt notwithstanding, of course. That had been all Kathy.

"And yes. You should absolutely wear that shade more often."

"Um, I don't know?" Ringo was still blushing a bit. "Maybe you just wanted to show off before the summer was over?" And she had a lot to show off, too!

"And maybe I will," she allowed, sounding only a little bit awkward. "Also? I wasn't totally kidding about the sun block. I was in a hurry and didn't grab any when I changed."

"I'm not good at showing off, at least when it's not something like gymnast--ohmigosh, Ringo, of course!" Kathy dug into her bag, pulling out a nice big bottle of SPF 45. "Use as much as you want. I can get your back, too, if you'd like?"
