Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were tables and chairs set up all around the lawn. Some were in the sun, where folks could work on their tan while they ate, and some were in the shade where folks could stay cool and non-crispy.

All of the tables had some blue and gold glitter scattered across them, because there was always enough to go around. This school certainly was blesesed in all the right ways.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

You know what, if Dante was going to be on some weird island with free room and board and probably something screwed up going on behind the scenes he was going to have to deal with sooner rather than later, he was at least going to make an effort to enjoy himself.

Or enjoy the view, in this case.

Was he shamelessly squinting over at Kathy to see how much skin he could catch under that shirt? Maybe. Maybe.

And was Kathy going to catch him squinting and blush, silently cursing her roommate? Hell yes.

"You know, most people say hello or something," she called over to the newbie. She was a superhero, dammit. And a senior. And had two years of this crazy island under her belt. Her currently non-existent belt, but this was all metaphor anyway. Point was, she wasn't going to stay quiet and blush just cause some guy was looking at her. "Greetings not big where you're from?"

Not when she could say something, blush, and plot Raven's demise. Much better plan.

Not particularly, no, unless they happened at sword-point. Still, Dante wasn't going to do something like be embarrassed at being caught looking. That was half the fun, right?

"Maybe I'm just window shopping," Dante called. "It's a free country, right?"

Had none of the guys at this school been acquainted with shame? Did they all get a shame-ectomy before hopping on the shuttle?

"Maybe you mistook me for something for sale," she snarked back, leaning back on her hands to eyeball him just as baldly. How did he like it, huh?

Just fine, actually.

Dante put his arms behind his head against the trunk of the tree, just so she could get a better look. "Hey, maybe I just liked the-- dress? Is that a dress?"

Yeah, no.

Well that had spectacularly backfired. But now she couldn't immediately look away, because then he'd win. Why did she even try sometimes? Why?

"I don't think it'll fit you," she said, ignoring his question. Because she was not admitting all of the stupid reasons she'd decided that she needed to wear an over-sized mesh shirt over a swimsuit. "But I'm sure you'd look lovely in it otherwise."

You just keep trying, Kathy.

"I probably would," Dante said. What? He'd worn weirder crap just because-- any host of reasons. Weirding people out. Because it looked cool. "But I'm thinking right now I like it better on you." Both of his eyebrows darted up for a second. Smugly. "No sale."

"Aww, and here I was gonna offer to loan it to you if you'd asked nicely," Kathy said with heavy sarcasm. "From here it looks like it would have brought out your eyes so fetchingly."

"So you like the eyes?" Dante said, gesturing at his face. "Thanks. Grew 'em myself, had to work hard on the looks."

THAT HADN'T BEEN WHAT YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO TAKE AWAY FROM THAT EXCHANGE, DANTE.

"Well, at least you're pretty," Kathy said. It didn't count as admitting anything. He clearly knew he was. Plus, this was Fandom. Damn near everyone was pretty. "Did you think about working on, oh, anything else while you were at it?"

"What, did you want to find out?"

HE WAS TAKING AWAY ALL THE WRONG THINGS FROM THIS, KATHY. DEAL WITH IT.

SHE HAD MEANT PERSONALITY, DANTE! PERSONALITY!

"Wait, what?" It took Kathy a few seconds to figure out where his mind had gone. And when she did, she blushed so hard she nearly felt light-headed. "Not what I was referring to!"

She wasn't yelping! You were yelping!

Dante gave a casual shrug and a quick wink, then snagged a burger off his plate. "Well, you know what they say about being specific," he said.

Well, for once he had a good point. Kathy was going to take a moment and take a swig of her soda. This conversation had clearly gone off the rails at some point. Maybe she could fix that?

She always was an optimist.

"So what if we tried this again," she suggested, hoping they could get onto a topic that wouldn't leave her internally flailing. "Hi. I'm Kathy. Welcome to Fandom."

She was getting a shit-eating grin either way, since conversations didn't reset that easily.

But you know what, he was going to be... borderline civilized. "I'm Dante," he said. "Thanks. I'm trying to make myself right at home."

As was obvious.

She could try very hard to make them, though!

"And how's that working out for you?" she asked dryly. "I'm guessing well."

"I've got free food, a place to crash, and a hot girl talking to me."

Or failing at snarking at him, whichever. "What do you think?"

... Dante still didn't actually trust anything about this set-up, which was kind of ruining it. He was trying not to let it.

She was succeeding at snarking! She just wasn't...winning! That was all! But she was definitely in second place!

"I--umm--oh. Thank you." Well, okay, now she was failing at snark. Because he'd flustered her again. Raven needed to hurry up and help her get better at compliments. "Uhh...Sounds like you've got your basic Maslow's hierarchy of needs covered then?"

Kathy you dork.

"My basic what?"

Congratulations. You'd finally officially lost him.

Probably because Dante's entire life had been a struggle to get even to the base of the pyramid.

"Stupid joke," Kathy said, waving it away. "Just a theory that ranks what you need in life from your basics for survival all the way up to self-actualization and oh my god, I think I was doing better at conversation back when we were just snarking back and forth."

That last part of that should probably not have been verbalized.

Dante looked distinctly amused, at least, so there was that. (Better to focus on that than on where his own life ranked on the pyramid.)

"Don't worry about it," he said, lounging back again. "You've got a pyramid, you can bury it in there."

"How pharoah you to say," Kathy said because sometimes she literally couldn't help her mouth.

She did clap a hand over it when she was done though, in a futile attempt to stop herself from talking.

Awww, Kathy, but you just got a snicker out of Dante! "Hey, don't sphinx it."

And his joke got a real, delighted smile out of her. Not many people properly appreciated puns!

"Isis-pect you dynasty these jokes coming," she said, dimpling at him.

Dante formed a gun with the fingers of one hand, and mimed the 'you hit that target right on' salute. "Nice one. Walked it off like an Egyptian."

He only knew that much about Egypt.
