Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were tables and chairs set up all around the lawn. Some were in the sun, where folks could soak up that precious vitamin D, and some were in the shade where folks could stay cool.

All of the tables had at least a little glitter on them though. It was a welcoming gesture to get glitter someplace you didn't know glitter could go!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Cheer was like a bat signal for Edward, really, and she was exuding quite a bit of it. "Someone seems fond of the glitter," he called to the girl, grinning. "You're in luck. We've plenty to go around."

Alluka was about pretty much the human embodiment of cheer most of the time, it was true.

She beamed back at the guy. He was talking to her! "I never got to have much at home," Alluka shared. "But no one cares about the mess of it here!"

"Oh, there's plenty who care about the mess," Edward said, chuckling, "But they're outnumbered, or at least the people in charge don't care much for their opinion. You should see our dances."

"Aye," Edward said. This one was adorable, wasn't she? "The big ones are outside of summer, mind, but there's food, dancing, glitter..."

"And we're all invited?" she asked excitedly. "All of us can go? Even if, even if we've never been to one before?"

"The one at the end of spring is only for upperclassmen," Edward amended. "But all the others, yeah, everyone can come. Dress up fancy, enjoy yourself."

Well, maybe by the time spring came around, if she was still here, she'd be able to go.

(No, no she wouldn't.)

But they sounded so fun!

"Yay!" she cheered. "I can't wait! Do you like parties?"

"I am rather fond of them," Edward said, grinning. Still, yes. "Though nothing quite lives up to these welcome picnics. So much food."

"There's lots to pick from," she agreed happily. "I haven't decided what to eat yet."

Mostly because she'd been too busy pondering the glitter, but shush.

"The little meat patties on bread are very good," Edward said, pointing them out. "And the cheese. And the chocolate."

"You like chocolate?"

"Can't get it that easily where I'm from," Edward said, shrugging. "Might as well indulge while I'm here."

Edward blinked. "No," he said, after a bit, "But next year's my last year as a student here."

Alluka looked puzzled. "You can only be a student for so long?"

No one had told her that. Did that mean she'd have to leave too?

"No one told you that?" Edward asked. "It's true. There's four years, and you wind up in one depending on what age you were. Freshman's fourteen and by eighteen and senior you've got to clear out."

Oh! She bounced.

"I'm fourteen!" Alluka announced, pleased. "So I get to stay here a really long time!"

"Four whole years," Edward said, his grin dimming to a friendlier smile that was a bit less on the ne'er-do-well side. "That's quite a bit of time."

The nuances of Edward's smile were going completely over her head.

"Not as long as forever though!" And wasn't there a--oh! "I'm Alluka," she added, a bit sheepishly.

She was bad at introductions.

"And I'm Edward," Edward said, giving a bit of a mock bow. "Rising senior with only one year left to thrive here. So I'm going to eat every scrap of chocolate I can lay my hands on."
