"Last weekend saw you with an influx of potential children from your futures," Obi-Wan said. "I am led to believe this is not an unusual occurrence..."

Anakin shook his head. "It happens annually, or near enough. Some of those children are more likely than others. Some are practically impossible."

Sorry, Tebb.

"Whereas others might be almost unavoidable," Obi-Wan said wryly. He had had none, which suited him fine. Minding Anakin's children from a distance was enough for him. "Normally, prophecy does not take such... practical forms. But regardless of what form they take, notions of what the future might be are often vague, and easy to misinterpret. It is such ideas about the future we would like to speak of today."

"Precisely," Anakin said. "And prophecies are notoriously unhelpful and stupid about such things."

Not that he was suuuuper bitter or anything.

Obi-Wan began to pace around the room. "So now that you have met these children and seen these futures, my question is: would you work towards them? Work away from them? Do you believe it is even possible to do such a thing? And if you had no children, do you believe that says anything about your future?"

"I am not a little shit," Obi-Wan said primly, "I am a diplomat."

Primly in a way that involved smirking, somehow.

"The two things aren't mutually exclusive," Anakin told him.

"Now you're badgering me," Obi-Wan decided.

"And not for the first time either," Anakin said, sipping from his coffee.

"I should have brought tea," Obi-Wan said thoughtfully, "I would have been able to match you in casual dramatics."

Anakin smirked at him. "You can never match me in casual dramatics."

"True," Obi-Wan said, "I never seem to get anyone kicking my door down for any reason."

And if they did, he'd probably still be sitting there, drinking tea.

"One of us isn't living life to the fullest, then," Anakin said, smiling. "I can't say which one..."

"I'm perfectly content not living life to the fullest," Obi-Wan said. "Especially if it means I have no children showing up on my doorstep, insisting I'm their father."

"Give it time, my friend," Anakin said. "You haven't even been here a year."

That was a strike in the 'don't stay here a year' column, but Obi-Wan wasn't feeling cruel enough to say that to Anakin, of all people.

"Then I'll have to avoid making any friends," he said.

"That seems...needlessly lonely," Anakin replied.

"It is what I did on Tatooine for many months, out of necessity," Obi-Wan said, sobering. "It has its benefits."

Even if it was something of an adjustment for someone like Obi-Wan.

"Such as...?"

"I had far less headaches," Obi-Wan said.

That was one way of putting it.

"Well, you're on a rock in the literal middle of nowhere," Anakin said. "That would happen."

Obi-Wan offered him a glance, askance.

"Would you like to get some tea when we're done here?" he asked.

Anakin chewed on his lower lip for a second, then nodded.

"You can tell me all about the history of these weekends," Obi-Wan said, with a tiny smile.

"Is it absolutely terrible that I can't remember all of the children that have showed up here and claimed to be part Skywalker?" Anakin asked.

Obi-Wan raised an eyebrow. "Well, you certainly get around," he offered. "That would be terrible, were you still a member of the Jedi Order."

Anakin's Force-sense rippled with almost overwhelming guilt, though none of it showed on his face. "Yes, well."

Anakin should feel guilty - as Obi-Wan felt guilty - and two months ago, he would not have even considered reaching out. But between Anakin's behavior recently and the conversation he'd had with Jaina, he found himself reaching out to touch Anakin's shoulder.

Briefly.

"Tea will be good, I think."

Anakin stiffened, then relaxed under Obi-Wan's hand.

"Caf would be better," he teased.

"The last thing this galaxy needs is for you to be more high-strung than you already are naturally," Obi-Wan said dryly.
