"Last weekend saw you with an influx of potential children from your futures," Obi-Wan said. "I am led to believe this is not an unusual occurrence..."

Anakin shook his head. "It happens annually, or near enough. Some of those children are more likely than others. Some are practically impossible."

Sorry, Tebb.

"Whereas others might be almost unavoidable," Obi-Wan said wryly. He had had none, which suited him fine. Minding Anakin's children from a distance was enough for him. "Normally, prophecy does not take such... practical forms. But regardless of what form they take, notions of what the future might be are often vague, and easy to misinterpret. It is such ideas about the future we would like to speak of today."

"Precisely," Anakin said. "And prophecies are notoriously unhelpful and stupid about such things."

Not that he was suuuuper bitter or anything.

Obi-Wan began to pace around the room. "So now that you have met these children and seen these futures, my question is: would you work towards them? Work away from them? Do you believe it is even possible to do such a thing? And if you had no children, do you believe that says anything about your future?"

Oh, Anakin.

"No, you are not high-strung," Obi-Wan mused. "That word is not strong enough to describe it..."

Anakin gave him a baleful look. "You're not that funny, you know."

Obi-Wan smiled at him. "Aren't I?"

"No," Anakin said, reaching out to poke him in the shoulder.

"Well, you are hardly a paragon of wit," Obi-Wan said, "So you've little room to judge."

Hardly a paragon of wit with whom he kind of shared a sense of humor, but shhh.

"Roger, roger," Anakin said, smirking.

Obi-Wan chuckled. "Roger," he echoed, affecting the galaxy's worst fake droid voice.

"I don't miss them even a little bit," Anakin said. "Kriff, they were stoopa."

"Fairly easy to deal with, however," Obi-Wan said. "Whose idea was it to put their heads on such thin necks?"

"Not a good engineer's," Anakin said, making a face.

"Someone who wanted us to come in and part large amounts of their heads from their bodies?" Obi-Wan suggested.

"Diabolically evil contractor that realized they'd have to order ten times as many because they were so easy to kill?" Anakin offered.

Obi-Wan let out a little amused snort. "I wouldn't put it past some of the trading cartels."

"They were some of the most underhanded credit-grubbers ever, and I knew Sith," Anakin agreed.

"Though that leaves the question of who was foolish enough to keep buying them, and in bulk," Obi-Wan said.

"The Separatists were being played as surely as the Republic was," Anakin said. "Palpatine probably paid for one war with the other side's credits..."

Obi-Wan shook his head. "Sell us expensive clones, sell them large amounts of terrible battle droids?" he said thoughtfully. "It's possible."

"Let us batter each other senseless and broke for half a decade," Anakin said, nodding. "I've had some time to think about it."

"Any other insights you might have had?" Obi-Wan asked, sounding genuinely interested.

If simply because it might help him make sense of... everything.

"I think he planned to at least Valorum's fall," Anakin said. "Probably encouraged the embargo on his own home system, which is a nice touch."

"It would have made him look like the victim, and ergo, sympathetic," Obi-Wan agreed. "It put him in a better position to become Chancellor."

"I haven't looked into the political maneuvering that got him on the short list, but I bet Naboo's plight moved him up," Anakin agreed.

Obi-Wan was silent again, as he thought back to that initial conflict on Naboo.

"It would also explain why Darth Maul was present," he said.

Anakin nodded. "Following up to make sure the boss's plan worked," he said. "I still haven't decided if his true end game was with the Sith exposed and the Trade Federation blamed...or if he just improvised especially well."
