Self Defense, Thursday, Period One

This week around, the Danger Shop had been set up to resemble Fandom. Hey, the sim was in the system, might as well make as much use of it as possible, right?

Atton himself came stomping in more or less on time. "Okay," he yelled, "I had an entire conversation with my mirror this morning that was about as embarrassing as it was traumatizing, which means the island is being a--" ...string of mean Twi'lekki words, apparently, "--and I don't want to deal with it because all of my defense mechanisms are built on a network of carefully constructed lies."

Beat.

"Ugh."

He slapped a blaster onto a table of other blasters.

"So, instead of starting off with the fighting moves I had planned, today, we're shooting things. Silently. Grab one, grab a friend, work on your reflexes."

He pointed at Sparkle. "You, come see me after class, I have something for you. Don't ask questions. That's good advice for everyone here today, actually."

He smashed his fist down on a red button and not entirely realistic-looking monsters suddenly spawned all over town. There.

There's monsters overrunning the city. You get a blaster and a small display you can clip to your wrist. Each monster shot adds a point, but if a monster touches you, it takes off two of your points.

Go forth and shoot.

Jumping right into the guns again, Travis saw. He sighed and picked one up before he headed out to try and stay alive. He doubted his odds.

"Want to work together?" Alana asked, holding a gun in her hands. "You're cute and seem like a decent guy, and since this is all a sim I don't even mind too much that I'll probably have to save you."

She sighed. "And apparently I'm blurting out everything on my mind. Okay. This sucks."

"Well, it's not like it's not true." It couldn't be not true, not today. "You're pretty cute too and I'm not gonna have any shame in hiding behind you should something nasty happen. I'm not a skilled fighter."

Way to make yourself look awesome, Travis.

"Kind of noticed that in class last week," Alana acknowledged. "But at least you know it so I don't have to pretend to think you're good to spare your ego. Besides, everybody starts from somewhere, right?"

"My ego's taken plenty of hits in my lifetime so I can take it even if it kind of stings but whatever," Travis said, loading up the blaster. "I'll do my best to help you out though."

"And you're bigger than me, so that can't hurt," Alana pointed out, squnting down the barrel of her gun at one of the monsters. "What do you think we're supposed to be killing, anyhow? It looks like a red blob. A red cat blob."

"Red cat blob with horns," he added, wincing. "Whatever it is, I'm sure it's bitey and vicious and smells gross."

"Got that right," Alana said, wafting a hand in front of her nose as the blob came closer. "Oh god. Here we go."

She braced herself and pulled the trigger on her blaster, firing a shot that strafed off the blob cat's flank. It just seemed to make the beast angrier.

"I'm not any good with these things," Vider announced. "Somebody be my partner."

"I'm very good with these things in no small part due to my massive daddy issues," Four volunteered, then groaned in frustration. "Let's shoot things."

"I also have massive daddy issues, and you're really hot, so that sounds great," Vider said, and then, likewise, groaned. "Yes. Shooting things. Good."

"Shooting things is much better than me blushing because girls here think I'm hot," Four agreed, then shook his head hard. "There's a reason I don't talk much."

"You're blushing? I probably look like a tomato right now." A flush showed up really well on Vider's fair Asgardian skin. "And I find it impossible to believe the girls wherever you come from don't think you're hot," Vider continued, "and I can't believe I just said that, maybe we'll get lucky and I'll accidentally shoot myself, ragging bone."

"I wonder if getting shot for pretend hurts as much as getting shot for real," Four mused. He traced his own cheek along where Vider's mark was. "Tattoo?" he asked. "I like it."

"It should, if they want people to learn not to do that again." She wasn't counting herself in that group. "And, thanks, but it's required by law, I didn't choose it or anything...except for how I did, because I chose to become a berserker."

"So it divides you out by occupation?" he guessed. "Ours are for self-expression." He smiled. "I went a little crazy with getting them. They're fun. I haven't had a lot of fun in my life until now."

Sparkle really wasn't the sort to deal with monsters alone.

That said, Sparkle was even more not the sort to go actively looking for a partner that he could potentially end up spilling his guts to, so he was keeping his mouth shut, taking a blaster and a display, and doing his damnedest to slip away before anybody got any ideas about partnering up today.

He was going to lose so many points today, and he didn't care.

Yeah, right, good luck with that Sparkle.

"Help me," Minako hissed, grabbing his elbow before he could get away. "I cannot pair up with any of the guys in this class because I am totally going to blurt out that they're hot and we should make-out and while you're hot you're my best friend so at least I don't have to worry about making a total idiot of myself."

"And it helps that we both know I'm more queer than a three-dollar bill and not really interested anyway?" Yes, Sparkle. That. "I was actually trying to sneak off before anybody could ask to be my partner, because being around people means I'll probably start blurting out things I'm not emotionally stable enough to share with other people, but if you promise not to ask too many questions it might not be so bad. I suck at fighting things, though. I mean I've used blasters and guns a few times but if we're looking at the odds, I'm gonna get tagged by those pixel things a lot before the period is through."

UGH.

"Is there such a thing as a three-dollar bill? If there's not, we should make one. We'll call it 'the Sparklenote' and it's good for a DDR session where the only talking we have to do is trash-talking," Minako promised. "--and if it helps, I'm going to get tagged, too. The only guns I've ever used are at the arcade."

"That helps a little bit," Sparkle decided, smirking faintly. "Maybe I'll get to look like I know what I'm doing with one of these things for a change. Atton showed me how to use them once, when it was raining sharks."

...

"This place is so messed up."

"Fucked up, Sparkle. You can swear in front of me, you know, I'm not five. And this place is fucked up," Minako stated cheerfully. "Can I pretend the monsters are the things making us tell the truth? It might improve my aim."

"I don't always fucking swear, you know," Sparkle snarked, shooting Minako a grin. "But yeah, the place is fucked up. And sure, we can pretend whatever makes you happy. Just so long as we don't have to act it out, because shit, we'd suck at that."

A lot.

"Dun dun dun dun! Dun dun dun!" Minako, singing the ~~Mission Impossible~~ Assignment Improbable theme probably wasn't part of the assignment, nor was skipping. "We should find the high ground, right? That's what they do in movies."
