Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The forecast for today might have called for rain, but thankfully, there was no sign of bad precipitation in Fandom. The weather was bright and sunny, but still a bit chilly, so the first thing people might have noticed when they arrived was the bonfire set up in the middle of the lawn. There were tables and chairs scattered around the bonfire, some a safer distance away than others, and each table had been graced with a good portion of gold and blue glitter because the glitter supply was never, ever going to run out and certain people in the administration had just come to terms with that.

There were tables of moddable food and drinks, complete with the ingredients to make s'mores, as well as name tags and the lists of Big Siblings and roommates. It was time to welcome some new people!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Bob had portalled here and come more or less straight to the party; he would, after all, have plenty of time to explore. It still didn't quite seem real.

There were nametags for everyone, and glanced over them, making note of a few before finding the Hrothbert of Bainbridge. It made him pause, but that letter had somehow worked, so... He tried and was delighted to find he could touch it. Well, maybe the sticky part was less delightful, but touching something!

He hopefully tried one or two of the others, but his hand continued going through them. Ah, well.

He wasn't going to bother being by the food or fire, for obvious reasons, but he was going to enjoy the feel of being outside, someplace still fairly new, and among people.

That... was not a face that Jonothon expected to see around again any time soon.

//... Bob?//

Why not? Today had already been plenty eventful, why not Bob, too?

Bob looked over and grinned. "Well, hello again. You're looking..." He pursed his lips. "Well, tired, to be frank, but more relaxed than you were."

You know, after having just been possessed by Betelgeuse.

//Tired is a little closer to my usual state of affairs these days,// Jono replied with a shrug. //It'll pass eventually. Hopefully sooner rather than later. You're looking... here.//

Here was the surprising part. Jono really couldn't say he looked well if the man was dead, could he?
nuclear_snide: (sly)

He certainly could! It would only be polite. And Bob was emulating a lovely suit today! Jono liked men in good suits, didn't he?

"So I am," he agreed. "Apparently, I'll be a teacher here now."
furnaceface: (Orly?)

Jono wasn't that prone to checking out other men!

Okay, there were exceptions! But!

...

Shut up! Anyway, it was about as rude to tell somebody they looked tired, so Bob and Jono were on even footing, here.

//Well, that was unexpected,// he decreed. //Decide you liked it here that much, did you? What'll you be teaching?//
nuclear_snide: (nonplussed)

Hey, Bob was only being Bob honest!

"More like 'decided this place is woefully underprepared for trouble of the magical kind'," he answered, looking a bit disgusted. "I'll be trying to remedy that."
furnaceface: (Told you so)

//Not the sort to pick small battles, are you, mate?//

Did Jono sound amused by this? Jono definitely sounded amused by this.

//Have much experience with the students around here, yet?//

"I haven't met any many yet, no," Bob answered. "I imagine they're as interesting as the adults, with the added complication of teenage hormones?"

"Not trying to be rude," Kitty warned as she came over, because staring at people might look a little weird, "just looking for a nametag."

"Ah." Bob smoothed his jacket down so his was visible. "Looking for anybody in particular?" He gave her a very charming smile, just in case she was single. And into ghosts.
throughaphase: (looking down)

Kitty had to look at the paper she had it written on to make sure she was getting the first part right. "Hrothbert of Bainbridge?"
nuclear_snide: (really?)

throughaphase: (little smile)

"I haven't yet seen anything you need to apologise for," Bob answered. "Although I suppose to be fair, I haven't seen that much yet. It's a pleasure to meet you, certainly." Don't ask her if she's single yet! Be a little subtle! "What do you teach?"
throughaphase: (listening to every word)

"Adulting 101," Kitty answered. "Which is basically making sure the kids have the skills they need to like, pay bills when they leave here. What are you teaching?"

Bob looked pained for a moment."I know some adults who could use that class." Harry. "Defense against magic, to answer your question. It seemed the sort of thing the students here ought to know a bit better."

Jones watched Bob for a moment or two with the name tags with interest before approaching.

"Non corporeal?" She queried. "Do you need assistance?"

Bob looked up and gave her a smile, touched. "Thank you, that's very kind. But no, it appears my own is tangible to me." He fiddled with the edge of it for a moment, just because he could. "I just can't keep from hoping. I'm not entirely certain what rules the island's magic works on yet."

He eyed Jones curiously for a moment; he didn't even bother with his usual flirting, given the feeling of age and distance he was getting from her. "Hrothbert of Bainbridge," he introduced himself with a little bow. "Although most these days call me Bob."

"I am Jones," she replied with a nod of her head. "Formerly of Gunnerkrigg Court. A place not too dissimilar to this island. Unfortunately my knowledge of how technology and magic work in this plane is limited."

"Mm. Well, I could tell you how it works in my own world, but this place is very much another question." He waved at his name tag. "I shouldn't even be able to touch this, let alone the offer letter they sent me."

He shrugged. "Technically, I shouldn't even be able to be here. My curiosity is at war with not wanting to look the gift horse too far in the mouth," he confessed.

"Where is Gunnerkrigg Court? I'm not familiar with it."

"England," she replied. "Though it is well hidden and not generally accessible from this dimension. I will know more once I see the night sky tonight."

"I'm not entirely sure this island shares a dimension with any other part of reality," Bob said. "How will the sky help? Surely the stars could be the same in multiple dimensions."

Bob blinked. "Well, I'll definitely look forward to seeing if that's the case. How on earth - or the moon - did that happen?"
