Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The forecast for today might have called for rain, but thankfully, there was no sign of bad precipitation in Fandom. The weather was bright and sunny, but still a bit chilly, so the first thing people might have noticed when they arrived was the bonfire set up in the middle of the lawn. There were tables and chairs scattered around the bonfire, some a safer distance away than others, and each table had been graced with a good portion of gold and blue glitter because the glitter supply was never, ever going to run out and certain people in the administration had just come to terms with that.

There were tables of ~~moddable~~ food and drinks, complete with the ingredients to make s'mores, as well as name tags and the lists of Big Siblings and roommates. It was time to welcome some new people!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

//Tired is a little closer to my usual state of affairs these days,// Jono replied with a shrug. //It'll pass eventually. Hopefully sooner rather than later. You're looking... here.//

Here was the surprising part. Jono really couldn't say he looked well if the man was dead, could he?

He certainly could! It would only be polite. And Bob was emulating a lovely suit today! Jono liked men in good suits, didn't he?

"So I am," he agreed. "Apparently, I'll be a teacher here now."

Jono wasn't that prone to checking out other men!

Okay, there were exceptions! But!

Shut up! Anyway, it was about as rude to tell somebody they looked tired, so Bob and Jono were on even footing, here.

//Well, that was unexpected,// he decreed. //Decide you liked it here that much, did you? What'll you be teaching?//

Hey, Bob was only being ~~Bob~~ honest!

"More like 'decided this place is woefully underprepared for trouble of the magical kind'," he answered, looking a bit disgusted. "I'll be trying to remedy that."

//Not the sort to pick small battles, are you, mate?//

Did Jono sound amused by this? Jono definitely sounded amused by this.

//Have much experience with the students around here, yet?//

"I haven't met ~~any~~ many yet, no," Bob answered. "I imagine they're as interesting as the adults, with the added complication of teenage hormones?"

Oh, Bob. You poor, sweet thing.

//... Yes, at least a little bit as interesting as the adults,// Jono agreed, not bothering to hide his amusement. //They certainly figure they know at least twice as much.//

"They're teenagers. Of course they do." He'd made it through Harry as a teenager. He'd made it through Harry's mother and uncle as teenagers. He would manage this.

But had he made it through dozens of them all at once? Jono would have reached out to pat his shoulder, if he could.

//So, that's what your teaching, then, is it? Some sort of protection against magic?//

It seemed like a better course for the conversation than him just laughing forever.

Well, no; teaching one generation at a time meant he hadn't worked with more than five or six at once in centuries.

"Yes," he agreed. "Counterspells, wards, avoidance, and when to just beat someone over the head." He eyed Jono. "What is it you're teaching?"

Jono really would have laughed, then, if he could.

//Powers and identity, and how one ties into the other,// he replied. //Hopefully my students don't cause yours too many problems, hm?//

Bob made a thoughtful face. "I would think they'd be complementary classes, just with different focus. I expect I'll have some with magic of their own. Besides, if any of them decide to face off against each other, we can always..." He shrugged. "Take bets?"

Yeah, Jono was giving you a side-eye, Bob.

//What in the world would either of us bet that would be of any use to the other?//

Ah, now that, Bob had an answer for. "Well, you've got a body, for starters. Or, well, most of one. And I have..." He floundered for a moment. "I'm very good at finding things out. You can never have too much information, can you? Also I can teach magic. And I know a lot of languages."

He eyed Jono. "Or I could just offer my services as fashion consultant. Really?" He shifted appearance to mirror Jono. "This is what you're going with for teaching high school?"

Jono was about to point out that he was a telepath, and could find out information rather easily, himself. He decided better of it, and then was conveniently derailed by Bob's shapeshift.

He blinked.

//It's worked well enough for me so far,// he protested, waving a hand at Bob, mostly because he didn't like looking at himself, period, never mind when he was actually meant to find something wrong with what he was looking at. //Don't tell me you're going to try to get me into a suit as well.//

Bob sighed and melted back into his normal appearance. "Fine. But never underestimate the power of a good suit to draw in the ladies."

//Nothing quite like a suit to bring out a solid jawline and a dashing smile,// Jono snarked, raising an eyebrow. //Trust me, mate, if I were looking to put myself on the market, I'd be trying harder, but the sort of ladies that take an interest in blokes like me are more likely to notice the leather anyway.//

"Is that so?" Bob asked archly. "In that case, maybe something a bit nicer in leather, and you really must invite me along next time." He got a bit closer. "What sorts of women do you like? I could probably help; I make a very good wingman."

Ahahaha, 'next time.'

//What, these days? Pyromaniacs and ladies with very low standards, I suppose.//

And he was only half snarking about that one.

//Why, do you play wingman often?//

"Not as often as I'd like." Bob rolled his eyes. "Well, I'll keep my eyes open. I'm a very good judge of character."

You knew he was going to bring Cheryl to you, right, Jono? You hadn't specified "sane".

Well, 'sane' had never been a make-or-break factor before!

... Though it really should have been, in retrospect.

//I... appreciate that, I suppose. And here I haven't even won any bets, yet.//

"Trust me," Bob said, "you let me come along for the ride, or at least watch, and we'll both be winners."

//Aaand there it is,// Jono replied. //And here I can't even hold this voyeuristic side against you.//

He shook his head a little.

//We'll negotiate.//

"I'll take that as a conditional yes." Bob was smirking now. He was really liking it here!

//Very conditional. Exceptionally conditional.//

A beat.

//And once I figure out what those conditions are, I'll let you know.//
