Detention, Saturday, February 25th 2006

Fraser's standing quietly at the front of the classroom, waiting for those with detention to file in and take their seats.

The names are listed on the board.

When everyone is seated, Fraser starts speaking. "I'm sure you all know why you've been called here today. Whether it be for misbehavior, disrespect to a teacher, not going to class or, and sorry Mr. Sandburg, being the winner of a very peculiar lottery, you have all earned detention in one way or another. It's an unfortunate circumstance and one I'm sure you do not wish to repeat. We will begin activities shortly, we will break for lunch, and there will be more activites after lunch. If everything is successful, I will dismiss you in the early evening. Any questions?"

Blair looked at the CPR dummies and back at Fraser. "Um...if we're here for the right reasons should we do this too?"

"I believe it would be most beneficial," Fraser replies. "You never know when you might need basic first aid skills."

Blair nodded slowly and poked at the dummies with a finger. "They, um, don't have eyes. That's like, really odd."

Fraser peers down at the dummy and nods. "You're correct. I suppose we could draw eyes onto the dummy if that helps you concentrate."

Blair nodded gratefully and dug in his backpack for a pen. "Here, man. You should be the one to give them sight." He handed over several colors ~~except red...cause cylon dummies would be scary~~ to Fraser.

"Very well," Fraser says and takes a blue pen from Blair's selection. Not being an artist makes this task a bit difficult and, as a result, one eye comes out much larger than the other eye.

Fraser frowns and, taking a black pen, draws some eyelashes. So, what we have now is a CPR dummy with one big blue and one smaller blue eye and wavy eyelashes.

"I honestly don't know if I made it better or worse."

Blair took a step back and examined the dummy. "Oh!" He bounced excitedly. "Maybe their eyes are all crazy because they can't breathe! Like all of a sudden the dude stopped breathing and fell over and one eye popped out and...and..." Blair turned a little green and bent down to rummage through his bag.

"Maybe I should just find some sunglasses."

Fraser grimaces too. "I believe sunglasses would be a good idea, yes."

Placing a pair of sunglasses on the dummy without actually looking at it was hard, but Blair nodded. "Okay, better."

He studied the sign (http://depts.washington.edu/learncpr/quickcpr.html) for a moment and repeated the steps over to himself silently before starting. Holding a hand to his ear for a telephone, he mimed calling for help. "Someone isn't breathing, ~~and his eye popped out~~ I'm going to start CPR."

Moving forward he winced a little but blew into the dummies mouth for a second and then widly smacked him on the chest.

"Chest compressions should be slightly gentler," Fraser says. He shows Blair how to interlace his fingers, one palm down with the other hand on top. "Fifteen chest compression. Push down solidly on the victim's chest using your arms. Don't bounce. And do not worry about breaking the victim's ribs. If your hand placement is correct, that will not happen."

Blair bit his lip and listened to the instructions. "Okay, man." He interlaced his fingers and pressed down mumbling "1 don't bounce, 2 don't bounce, 3 don't bounce..."

Reaching fifteen he grinned and moved back. "So is he all healthy now?"

"Very good form, Mr. Sandburg," Fraser compliments. "And I bet he would be well...if he were alive. As it is now, if this dummy came to life, I believe you would be quite more talented than you know."

"That's not like a possibilty, right? Because maybe we shouldn't have given him a way to see us if he's going to get up and start walking around!"

"I don't believe that will happen Mr. Sandburg," Fraser assures him. "He quite...well, he's a dummy. And you did an exceptional job performing CPR on this dummy. Now, why don't you try Heimlich Maneuver."

Blair studied the sheet again and propped the dummy up to grasp it around the middle and pulled back sharply.

And toppled backwards with it. He looked up from under the dummy. "Oof. Do you think I stopped from choking?"

"The compression against the dummy's chest was well done and the force might've been enough to dislodge the foreign object but staying on your feet is usually recommended," Fraser says.

Blair nodded. "Good to know."

"Now, Mr. Sandburg," Fraser starts, "how do you think you would treat a fractured bone? If you were the first on the scene and had to give first aid to someone with a fractured ankle, how would you do it?"

Xander snorts. "Or it'd be just another day in Fandom..."

"If that did happen, Mr. Harris, you would be the first line of defense against the undead dummies, you know."

Xander flushes, just a little, then grins crookedly. "Are they zombie dummies or vampire dummies? Fire works on both, but if you're flame-free, you'd want to take different approaches there."

"I hadn't given it that much thought but perhaps vampire zombie dummies?" Fraser looks down at the dummy. "And how did we get on the subject of destorying this dummy rather than saving him?"

Blair scoffed from where he was listening. Violence is always the first answer here

"Blair brought him to life and he started shambling towards us?" Xander suggests. "In theory."

He shrugs. "If he's not a vampire zombie dummy - which is pretty likely since I don't think vampires like the taste of zombie blood - we could always try saving him, but the shambling troubles me. Also the sunglasses."

"The sunglasses are necessary," Fraser says, "as I accidentally made Mr. Sandburg's dummy have some very frightening eyes."
