Advanced Criminal Justice, Class 14, Period 1, 02.23.06

[ooc: Hi! I have nothing to say, really. But there's always an OOC note. Oh! Wait, yes I do. I would totally have your grades for your essays up today, but um, still missing them from a couple people. If you don't get them in by this weekend? I'm not grading them, and you're going down a grade. Letting you know. Anyway. Class Info Post]

Rory sat on Tick's desk, looking very, very grumpy. All her limbs were still attached, though, and she was nursing a large cup of coffee.

"So. Hi. Professor Tick unfortunately couldn't be here today, so I'll be leading the discussion today."

"Last class, we talked about how Justice is implemented in Fandom. Do you guys think what happens around here is fair, as a whole? Furthermore, and this isn't just in Fandom, but do you think Justice can ever be viewed as subjective? Or, rather, the way said Justice is implemented.

I mean, let's say that someone, for instance, had nothing to do with the casting of a play, and she got horribly punished anyway, because the person who got cast thought it was in the name of Jusice to curse her, or something? Is that right, or wrong? Whoever cursed this person probably thought they were doing it for the good of the school, but they were misguided. Some might argue that Justice had become more like revenge then.

Once Justice is enacted due to a personal vendetta of sorts, does it cross the line from objective, fair Justice to subjective revenge? Or is there a middle ground? Discuss. And if you want to know what I'm talking about, ask me about my arms and legs. Seriously. I dare you."

Rory scowled, and paused. "Um, and for extra credit? Give me names of people who could conceivably cast a curse or whatever. Who live here. Who don't like plays, or brunettes, or something. Oh! And Logan, I need to talk to you when you have a second. After class, if it needs to be."

"I don't think that because there is some sort of revenge involved, that that means that you automatically can't be fair." Cameron replied, probably a bit too worked up in the subject as he found that Tick has pretty much told him the opposite. "As long as the person involved knows not to take it too far and is actually motivated to do the right thing. Blindly hurting someone because you think you've been done wrong however is just not cool."

He paused and stared at Rory who looked very much like her whorey counterpart right now. "You got cursed?"

Sam shrugged. "I think that all Justice is subjective, to some extent. For instance, a criminal who is convicted won't necessarily think that's just, though the victim of the crime may feel that it is. Plus, there's the sentence--the criminal may think it's too stringent, while the victim or victim's family may feel that it's too light."

"As for personal vendettas," she thought of a certain jacket, "sometimes it's about making the proper statement so the injured person can get some closure."

She may have looked a bit confused about the arms and legs thing, but judging by the expression on Rory's face, today wasn't the day to ask.

During class, Sam might notice Marty giving her strange looks.

Towards the end of class she might notice Marty drop something on Janet's desk. (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/668038.html?thread=31736198#t31736198)

"If you punish someone for something they're not at fault for," said Janet. "Then it isn't even revenge. It's misguided, and I'd say that would be considered injustice."

During the class Janet may notice that Marty is giving her a strange look.

Towards the end of class Marty walks by her desk with an envelope that contains this (http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a244/oatmanspatient/janet.jpg) and a post-it that says: "We need to talk."

"Feeling a little persecuted Rory?" Marty said with a little grin. "But to get back to topic: Yes. Justice is always subjective and will always be affected by a person's own bias."

"I am so completely the wrong person to ask about this that I think I'd be struck my lightening if I seriously tried to pretend I'm not." Parker took a sip of her coffee, not really awake yet. "That said. Good things can come out of bad actions, for bad motives. And vice versa. It's all subjective, but the world may only suffer on a karmic level if the prosecutor of a criminal has a beef with the defendant. They still might do a good job of enacting consequences for the public."

Angel looked at Rory worriedly. "Um - I think sometimes it can be both. Speaking as a guy who only exists because of a curse, maybe the intent is revenge but the outcome can be better than that if you let it."

About halfway through the class, Callisto tossed a note over.

You go see Skeeter to get the marks off then?

"It can still be justice if it's personal," Logan said. "It crosses the line when the punishment exceeds the crime."

Angel gave Logan a puzzled look (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/668038.html?thread=31801222#t31801222).

Veronica tossed a note on Logan's desk.

Why aren't you still sticky and green?

Yes, she was still pouting.

Veronica walked in to class ten minutes late, visibly annoyed, her hair shoved under a hat. It was possible that a few stray strands had escaped and if one looked close enough, they would notice that there was something green in them.

Additionally, if someone got close enough, they would notice that she smelled like Nyquil (http://marsheadtilt.livejournal.com/37562.html).

[not able to interact until i get home from work, but at least wanted to establish her here!]

Some folks didn't need to be close to notice things being off about Veronica's scent. Not that Angel had been trying since there were things souled vampires who happened to be gentlemen tried really hard not to notice at all, particularly since, oh, say Veronica and Logan's trip to New York city, just to pick a random example.

But, you know, NyQuil. Hard to miss that one.

Also hard not to have very intricate mental images on just how Logan and Veronica might possibly both be smelling like 1) NyQuil and 2) each other.

Some days Angel wished he had less imagination. And one less sense, as long as he was making wishes.

In the meanwhile he just looked puzzled.

Jaye, who spent a short part of her night on the ceiling, just looks tired. And freaked. Because... ceiling. Also, she might be kinda not looking over at certain parts of the room, not avoidy, in an avoidy sort of way.

"You know, there's nothing wrong with kill 'em all and let god sort 'em out," says Aeryn Jaye.

"I, uh guess it would depend on what exactly they did to you. I mean, just because horrible firey death is a bit much for a play casting, doesn't mean it's necessarily wrong if, say, the person slaughtered everyone you ever knew."

Vala's eyes lit up. "Wow! You can curse someone for that?" she whispered in amazement. Possibly a little too loudly...

"Well, in my opinion? Revenge isn't Justice. It's entirely possible to pursue Justice against someone or a group for personal reasons without tipping over into revenge, though."
