Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Throughout the lawn, tables and chairs had been set up and scattered, some out in the bright, sunny center of everything, and some in the darker, more remote areas.

Eat up, folks! Don't let that food go to waste!

[OCD up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

It was a school picnic, which naturally meant that Emma was by the tables, filling her belly and her backpack.

Wonderful thing, a clearing head: it brought awareness, and awareness brought awareness of important people-- pretty girls, to be specific.

Edward still held a great deal of confusion and uncertainty as to his current predicament, but there was no better remedy than conversation, was there? "Taking good advantage of our hosts, I see," he said merrily. "Since you seem to be an expert - have you got any food recommendations for me?"

"Depends on whether you're planning on eating it now or later," Emma said, an apple finding its way into her bag.

"Is there a difference, then?" Edward asked, amusement coloring his voice. "Surely what tastes good now will taste good come tomorrow, right?"

"Most of it, sure," Emma said, shrugging. "Some of it, depends on your feelings about food poisoning."

"So what are you eating at the moment?"

Food poisoning was not a particularly charming subject, so he hoped to avoid it further.

"Bearclaw," Emma replied, holding the pastry up. "It'll keep but they're better fresh."

"What is it?" Edward asked. "Can't say I've ever seen a pastry like this before."

Where had he wound up?

Well, it wasn't Kansas.

Emma took a bite of her pastry. "Fried dough with almonds, tasty." The 'your loss' at him never having one before was implied.

"Right. I'll have to try one, then," Edward said, and offered her an easy smile. "Name's Edward, by the way."

"Emma," she said by way of reply.

"Hello Emma," Edward said, his smile broadening. "Mind if I sit?"

"Go ahead," Emma said. "It's a free country."

Edward slid into a seat near her. "How long've you been attending this school?" he asked, snagging some food while he was there anyway.

"A year, more or less," Emma told him. Longer than she'd spent at any other school. Not bad considering she'd never meant to come at all. "The place grows on you."

"They don't mind if you take more than your share?" Four asked, frowning slightly. "We're rationed at home."

Emma shook her head. "There's more than enough here," she said. "Suprised me too when I started."

Four thought about that, then took an apple and a pear.

Livin' the dream.

"Okay."

"You can also help yourself to what's in the common rooms," Emma added. "It's there to be eaten."

She was cutting into her own supply for you, Four.

Four's eyes widened. "Whenever you want?"

Man, and Emma had thought the group homes where she probably would have eaten better if the food had been rationed were bad.

"Nothing's stopping you," she said.

"Other than self-control," Four said, lips quirking up ruefully. "I don't want to give people a poor impression."

"They're not going to care," Emma assured him. "Or if they do, they're jerks."

"You know there's snacks in the common rooms, right?" Joker asked her.

"True," Emma said. "But sometimes you just don't want to leave your room to eat."

And she'd rather have the problem of too much food on hand than not enough.
