Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Throughout the lawn, tables and chairs had been set up and scattered, some out in the bright, sunny center of everything, and some in the darker, more remote areas.

Eat up, folks! Don't let that food go to waste!

[OCD up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Most of it, sure," Emma said, shrugging. "Some of it, depends on your feelings about food poisoning."

"So what are you eating at the moment?"

Food poisoning was not a particularly charming subject, so he hoped to avoid it further.

"Bearclaw," Emma replied, holding the pastry up. "It'll keep but they're better fresh."

"What is it?" Edward asked. "Can't say I've ever seen a pastry like this before."

Where had he wound up?

Well, it wasn't Kansas.

Emma took a bite of her pastry. "Fried dough with almonds, tasty." The 'your loss' at him never having one before was implied.

"Right. I'll have to try one, then," Edward said, and offered her an easy smile. "Name's Edward, by the way."

"Emma," she said by way of reply.

"Hello Emma," Edward said, his smile broadening. "Mind if I sit?"

"Go ahead," Emma said. "It's a free country."

Edward slid into a seat near her. "How long've you been attending this school?" he asked, snagging some food while he was there anyway.

"A year, more or less," Emma told him. Longer than she'd spent at any other school. Not bad considering she'd never meant to come at all. "The place grows on you."

"It doesn't seem so terrible to begin with," Edward said lightly. "Odd, but not at all unpleasant, including the present company."

The best reaction to winding up in a place like this probably wasn't flirting with girls left and right, but Edward considered himself a resilient sort.

Emma was gathering that about him.

"No one's told you about the more interesting parts of the place then?" Crazy island was crazy, Edward.

"My minder's told me a thing or two," Edward said, sobering somewhat. "Strange things about skipping time and 'dinosaurs'. Haven't made my mind up yet."

"The time thing's true," Emma said. "It's over a decade past the time it should be for me." Which was helpful in keeping Child Services far away from her.

"How can that be, though?" Edward said. Part of him was honestly still convinced this was leftover drunkenness from last night. "It's been three hundred years for me, if that's right. And it can't be."

"There's an explanation, but I hardly get it myself," Emma said. "Something to do with different universes so we're more going more sideways than forwards."

"That's... very clear."

Not particularly.

She'd said she didn't get it.

"I find it works best if you don't think about it too hard and just go with the flow." Save the side-eyes for the really crazy stuff.

Well, in that case Edward's previous look was intended for whoever had given her that woefully lacking explanation.

"I can do that, at the least," he said. "Be easier if they served some alcohol at this bash."

"Yeah, you'll want to go to Caritas for that," Emma said. "That's the bar that doesn't card."

Welcome to this brave new world of minimum drinking age laws.

"...there's a specific bar for playing cards?" Edward gleaned from that.

... it would be good to know later. After all, he couldn't even read an ID, let alone use one.

Oh, boy. "...I meant they don't check your age."
