From the way things had sounded on the radio, Billy had a feeling he'd have more visitors than usual today. So, he spent the early part of his shift making sure the library was in order, putting books back where they belonged and checking for anything strange - typically strange, not new!strange. He was kind of hoping there wouldn't be any of that today, but he also knew how far hope usually got people here.

"Oh, uh, hi there," Billy said, high-fiving the little one. "I just... you don't look old enough to have a daughter, that's all."

"Heh. Nice save, guy." Kenzi shifted Mia and said in a more business-like way, "I'm new in town, I was wondering if there were maps of the island I could look at, maybe some job listings?"

Scrounging and theft were good ways to make a buck, but hey, working at a diner or fast food place would mean take-home food for Mia.

Oh, now Billy understood more of how the crazy was going on here. "Yeah, we have some here at the desk," he said, taking out a map to show her. "Um, I don't know about job listings, but the community center is here." He pointed to the map. "There might be some listings there?"

And hey, when Kenzi was back to normal, she might have a good job!

"Community Center, hunh? Do they have, oh, babysitting? Playtime?"

"No babysitter!"

"Silly Mia." Kenzi jostled her a little, eyes still on the map. "So, I'm Kenzi, this is Mia... Hmm. Lots of shops." For shoplifting from. "And diners. How long have you been here, what's a good place to start?"

"Um, I've been here for a few years now. What about one of the bars?" Billy said, thinking about Kenzi's typical habits. "You could make a lot of tips."

"Ha!... although, there's the kidlet." Kenzi bit her lip, looking at Mia. "You think they'd mind, if I had her in a bar? Or is there anyone who'd make trouble?"

"I don't think so. There's a spell on Caritas that sends anyone who causes a fight into the lake," Billy said. "It's probably one of the safest places around." Which really said a lot about the island.

"A spell," Kenzi said skeptically. "Riiight."

"Magic!" Mia threw her hand in the air. "Like Tutya!"

"Probably," Kenzi said dryly. Aunt Ludmilla's fortune-teller schtick could maybe use some reviving here, hmm.

"There really is magic here. There's magic all over the island," Billy said, more to Mia than Kenzi since at least she seemed excited about it. "You picked a good place to come to live."

"Mostly I picked it for cheap rents and cute houses," Kenzi said, not mentioning being outside of D.C. proper, from what she could figure. "So, what's magic around here, exactly? Sword-swallowers? Carnies? Magic mushrooms?"

"More like people with superpowers," Billy said. This shouldn't have been as amusing as it was, and he had a feeling he'd be giving Kenzi a hug if/when this was all over. "You haven't noticed anyone doing strange stuff?"

"I think you're the first person here I've talked to. And when you have a toddler, they have a way of distracting you. If nothing's blowing up within a five-mile radius, I could miss it."

"BOOM!" Mia yelled.

"Right, like that." The wheels in Kenzi's head were visibly turning. "Are you serious? Seriously serious? ... and if you are, is there a way I can get some superpowers? Because that would be sweet."

"I could say something schmoopy about how being a mom means you already have a superpower, but I'll refrain," Billy said with a laugh. "Most people came here with their abilities. That's just kind of how it works."

Kenzi made a face at him and said, "Da--dangit. I was really hoping to get something like the ability to stop time. I would use the shit out of that power."

"Shit," Mia repeated.
