Library [12/12]

The library was starting to look a little lived-in, with all the researchers running about. John had brought a box of donuts and thrown it on one table, and chaos was reigning as the books were piling up.

It was the librarian manning the desk today, in between circling the library to check his wards and make sure no one was doing any stupid shite. The "No Guns in the Library" sign was displayed prominently again, and the box below it would be happy to hold your weaponry while you were researching.

To say Tannis looked like she empathized would have been overstating things, kind of a lot. But she had a good deal of personal hatred towards Handsome Jack, so there was that.

"And does it look like his men are looking for anything, by any chance?"

"It mostly looks like they're setting up a larger guard and are getting a bit twitcher," Jessica said. "If you ask me, and you did, it seems more like they're more frustrated than cocky, so I'm assuming they're still looking. But that's pure, slightly educated guesswork."

"Well that wasn't very useful." Gee thanks, Doctor! She sighed and rolled her eyes, fixing the goggles that seemed to permanently perched on the top of her head. "It could be either. I guess that kind of imprecision ––" And she said the word like she abhorred the whole concept. "–– doesn't leave you with very many options on what to do next..."

"Are you goi to suggest fighting back?" Jessica asked. "Because it seems like we're champing at the hit to fight back and I will happily tell everyone that it's time if a professional scientist suggests it."

"I'm suggesting you arm yourselves, yes," Tannis said, far too lightly for the subject, really. "After all, it's the only language Jack understands. That, and perhaps chairs on the ceiling."

Pay no mind to that, Jessica. You were better off not knowing.

"You have guns available, don't you?"

"We have a lot of people with powers and weapons of their own," Jessica said. "And when is stuff started last week, some Hyperion gun vending machines popped up. In your professional opinion, do you think we can trust those, or is that part of a scam to blow us up? I haven't been able to decide yet."

'In your professional opinion', oh, that was nice to hear. Much nicer than being treated like a raving lunatic with interpersonal communication issues!

No matter how apt a description the latter might have been.

Tannis waved a hand. "Oh, they work just fine, they always do," she said. "Jack is far too obnoxiously sure of himself to bother sabotaging the machines. The resistance here uses his weapons too. Makes him a nice bit of profit for frivolous purchases, I'm sure. Perhaps the latest Crimson Raider attack bought him a puppy made of bacon, or somesuch."

"I guess we'll have to get that machine from the dorms back into working order," Jessica said, mostly to herself. "Jack's men use the same guns, don't they? So we'd be working from a place of roughly equal firepower? And they know the weapons better."

"Oh, I have a theory about how they distribute the guns with the lowest firepower to the workers they dislike most, perhaps the ones who always smell vaguely of rotten cheese ––"

Sorry, these digressions happened sometimes.

"How does that compare with the weapons in the machines? Are we getting the rotten cheese guns?" Jessica checked.

"What?"

Yes, she'd managed to get a little carried away wth her thoughts for a second there.

"Oh, no. That would be bad for business. If your machines are the same as what we have in this city, you should be evenly matched with Hyperion. in that regard, anyway. And, logic states that changing that balance would not go amiss."

"I'd like to really skew that balance in our favor, so bear with me a second, Doctor," Jessica said. "From what I've seen of the vending machines, the weapons seem pretty customizable. Do you think we could customize them further to give us an advantage here? We do have some pretty capable engineers in Fandom."

"Yes, I do think that would be possible." And it was vaguely science, so Tannis kind of perked up at it. Humans were manageable when science was involved. "What kinds of resources do you have available?"

"We have stores here that either have or can quickly get anything you can imagine," Jessica said. "And you're a scientist in another world, so I bet you can imagine a lot of things."

"Well, that is true, I am quite brilliant." Not quite what Jessica had said, but close enough. "This is something that should be looked into further. There should be some pooling of resources."

"If you have any specific ideas, I'm sure I can find some people more than happy to do some product testing by shooting at Jack's men. I'll send you detailed reports on how they worked and if we came up with anything useful that you might be able to use," Jessica said.

"I recommend attempting to combine several weapons into one," Tannis replied after a thoughtful pause. "I've always wanted to see what a corrosive shock weapon looks like!"

"I'll give it a try and take video," Jessica said. "Thanks for the brainstorming, Doctor. I'm sure it'll prove to be a big help."
