Library, Wednesday

Anyone expecting a quiet redhead behind the circulation was in for a rude surprise--emphasis on the rude. There was a lanky brunette behind the counter today, watchful and on edge. There was a knife strapped to her hip and a gun within easy reach under the desk.

Zee wasn't taking any chances with the creepy guys that were suddenly around the island today. She was going to be the sister in view for the rest of the week, their other classes and identities be damned. One surprise attack that had them appearing in one of those weird machines was more than enough, thanks.

Don't expect a lot of help from today's substitute library aide, unless you were planning a trip out to put the hurt on some of those tire-wearing freaks. Then Zee was all yours.

"We're the residents of Fandom Island, mostly students, around my age. Um, this group of people calling themselves 'Hyperion' moved in last week and there's this guy named Handsome Jack who keeps stealing radio broadcasts to tell us to stay out of their business, and I guess they're digging for something out in our preserve? He called it a Vault on the radio this morning, so... I guess there must be one, right?"

A beat, and yes, you better believe Evan was doing his best to muster up the puppy eyes, here. Could you see those puppy eyes? Who could ignore those, Lilith?

"There are armed guards and things, so nobody's been able to get close or anything to see what's up, though."

As a matter of fact, she could not ignore those puppy eyes. Not that she had very much of a reason to in the first place, but still. She was a pretty kind-hearted woman, and they were pretty effective.

"Son of a ––" Also, there was that. "How long has he been there? Since last week? Does it seem like they've gotten far with their dig?"

Sorry for all the questions, Evan. But at least she'd answered the first one with the second, really.

"We're not sure just how far," Evan noted, "but with the way this Jack guy talks on the radio, it sounds like they're getting close to whatever it is they want."

He shook his head a bit.

"He is making threats, though. 'Accidents do happen,' and things like that."

"Yeah, they sure as hell happen when Jack's around. And that's even without what could be in the Vault itself." Pandorans sucked at reassuring, news at eleven. "Looks like you really do need Tannis."

She gave the other woman a nudge.

Tannis objected with a groggy murmur.

"If this is a bad time, we could... um..." Evan paused for a moment, and then shook his head. There was such a thing as being too courteous, after all. "No, you're right. We really could use all the help we could possibly get. Um... Excuse me, Dr. Tannis? Ma'am?"

Maybe if he stammered some more, that would wake her up?

Another nudge from Lilith, and Tannis jolted awake. She lifted her head off the desk and looked aroud dazed. Until her gaze found the screen and she immediately looked displeased.

"I thought I told you people to not disturb me! I'm very busy with research and it's going slowly enough as it is with my concentration issues!"

Only Lilith batting her hand away kept her from terminating the call on the spot. "Look," Lilith tried, "I know you hate this, but there's been a V––"

"No!" Tannis declared, getting up. "My research comes first!"

And then she stalked off in a huff, leaving Lilith alone.

Oh. Oh. Well... Evan's face fell a little at that, and then he slumped at the shoulders, looking toward the desktop.

"Well, I guess you tried. We'll have to figure out what to do about the Vault on our own, huh?"

Lilith was glaring in Tannis' general direction when he said that. He got a much gentler look. And then there was determination in her face.

"No, she's the expert on this stuff, and she's gonna help you, okay?" she said. "I'm gonna –- I'm going to persuade her. It might take a while but I'm going to do it."

"Really?" Hey, lookit that little kid perk right up, Lilith! "Thank you! Thank you so much!"

... The fact that he was genuinely sincere about that probably kept it from seeming as though he was laying it on too thick, at least.

Yeah, Lilith took it as sincere. She thought she had enough ofa good read on people, anyway.

"Don't mention it. Name's Lilith, by the way. And we've got your back, kiddo."

"Thank you, Lilith! I'm Evan," because, you know, maybe she'd want to know that, all things considered. "And... I should probably let people know that we've got someone on our side, huh?"

Really, if he wasn't on the other side of a computer screen in another world, he probably would have gone in for a hug.

Lilith probably would have accepted it. But as things were, she gave him a nod. "And I'll go make sure you do." And then she disappeared off-screen to do just that.

Even though it was going to take a lot of bickering with Tannis.
