Library [12/9]

It was a normal day in the library. Well, as normal as a day in the library at Fandom High ever got, given... well... things. (Hey, it was what it was.)

She swept a stack of books up off a table and dumped them on a cart, proceeding to move through the library and clear off the rest of the tables in the same way. It was one of the more "typical library duties" days of things, as opposed to the "Fandom library duties" days. Sometimes there was a rather clear difference.

Why was he -- ohhhhh yeah. Raven shrugged. "Apparently, some of the workers are really irresponsible."

Baker, for instance, was apparently quite the slacker!

"They leave their helmets around too?" Riley questioned, turning his attention back to the thing Raven had found. He tried to push a few things but nothing really happened.

He turned the communicator over, looking for a power source of some kind.

"No," Raven said, pouring on the sarcastic inflection. "I transformed the top of my head to mimic their helmets."

Sometimes, it was best simply to present the truth as ridiculously as possible.

"...riiiiight."

So, the sarcasm worked because Riley didn't believe her.

"Don't worry, I won't tell anyone that you found a helmet. Have you heard or seen this thing do anything since you picked it up?"

Well, if he was going to be cool on the whole stealing thing. . . .

"Not since I've been carrying it, but it worked for one of the guard guys. You know, before he, uh. Dropped it."

"What was he doing?" Riley asked, putting the communicator down in front of him and giving it a look. "Talking into it? Listening to it?"

"Yelling at it, mostly. But it yelled back. He held it about like this." Raven held up her hand to demonstrate how the worker she'd seen had held the communicator to yell at his coworker. She'd paid attention, since she was going to be mimicking the movement in a moment, anyway. "I'm not sure what buttons he was pushing, though."

"So, it is some kind of walkie talkie," he said once he'd watched her mimic the movements. "Not uncommon with a construction project but still..."

He thumbed the communicator again.

"This isn't like anything I've seen before and I've seen a lot of tech."

Raven thought as much, but hadn't been sure. Most tech around her these days looked shiny, new, and/or exotic.

"Have you seen gun vending machines before? Or those weird antenna things?"

"The gun machines, yeah. The other things, no." Riley glanced up at her again. "Weird antenna things?"

"It's called a New U or something. There's one right by the gun machine in the dorm lobby, and I think I saw one out in the preserve. I don't know what they do, though."

"...creepy," Riley said because the guns were enough to creep him out. "Something weird is going on here and it's not just the tinsel falling from the sky. You see anything else out there?"

"They're digging. Couldn't really work out what, though. They're trying to keep people out, though, so whatever it is, I'm guessing it's not great."

Riley took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes.

"So, I'm new to the island and not really...experienced with these island happenings," he confessed to Raven, making a face. "You think this gonna go bad?"

"I've only been here since this summer," Raven said. "But last time we had a bunch of random visitors, things got really pretty weird."

Well, less for Raven, since she just kind of mocked the fan she met into submission, but things seemed to be a little crazy for other people, judging by the radio.

"I can deal with really weird," he decided. "It's more of the 'oh my god, that person has a gaping head wound' that I'm concerned about. I'll scream. Loudly."

"That sounds like the appropriate reaction to me," Raven said. "I hope that doesn't happen. Maybe they should have bullet proof vest machines, too."

"Maybe we can put in a request?" Riley said, holding up the communicator. He felt a little bad about possibly freaking a student out. "They look like the listening types?"

"You'll probably get filed to some customer service department that'll smile and nod and pretend to listen and then go ahead and do whatever they want. Also, I'm not sure we want them to know we have their tech."

"...good point," Riley said, nodding. "You stayed hidden, right?"

Even if she had just conveniently found the communicator, he thought he'd asked.

"Just in case they aren't fine, upstanding businessmen and all..."

"I was completely camouflaged," Raven assured him. "Never even knew I was there."

It was easy to be sure about that when you could make yourself blend in perfectly to your surroundings.

"Good job," Riley complimented, nodding at her. "This is really good work. Not something I could have done in a million years. I would been the guy stepping on a twig and drawing the attention of neighboring states."

Raven smiled. It was always to have her talents appreciated, even if the person appreciating them didn't know their full extent. "Thanks. If you ever need someone really sneaky, you know who to ask."
