Library [12/9]

It was a normal day in the library. Well, as normal as a day in the library at Fandom High ever got, given... well... things. (Hey, it was what it was.)

She swept a stack of books up off a table and dumped them on a cart, proceeding to move through the library and clear off the rest of the tables in the same way. It was one of the more "typical library duties" days of things, as opposed to the "Fandom library duties" days. Sometimes there was a rather clear difference.

After the radio broadcast - Handsome Jack's, that is - Billy had decided to head for the library. Condescending tones from weird strangers didn't sit well with him, and you know what did make him pants-wettingly super duper excited? Searching the internet for people to try to find out all about them and their ridiculous names. Seriously, who called themselves Handsome anything?

Yeah, all of the stuff going on had Karolina uncomfortable and worried. She'd been uncomfortable ever since the gun machines had shown up, but now everything else was rubbing her the wrong way, too.

So here she was. She had no idea where to even start, but she felt like she should've been doing somethinng, if for nothing else then to just ease her own mind. Because maybe she was just paranoid.

Also, maybe her computer skills weren't the greatest. Mostly she was trying to Google Hyperion.

Riley, being the hacker boy that he was, opened up his laptop and immediately started trying to tap into any WiFi signals or any other weird computer networks this Hyperion company had set up.

He wasn't having any success but while he was searching, he was doing some digging too.
solarhippie: ([neu] Is this what people do on dates?)

Yeah, Karolina was no good at this computerized research thing. Time to get polite and ask for help.

"Uh, excuse me? Can I ask you a question?"

It took Riley a moment to figure out she was talking to him. And then when he looked up, he glanced over his shoulder like maybe there was someone else she was asking.

...right, he was an adult here. He cleared his throat. "What's up?"
solarhippie: ([neu] Do you need advice?)

Well, if it made him feel any better, he didn't look too much like a grown up and an authority figure, because that could've swayed her away from talking to him. Mostly, he'd looked like he knew what he was doing with a computer.

"Hi," she said. "Um, how do I search for things that aren't... really on our internet?"

This multiverse stuff was difficult.

[identity profile] 1stinkinpercent.livejournal.com 2013-12-09 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"Depends," Riley said after parsing her question out and processing it. "What exactly are you looking for?"
solarhippie: ([neu] Yeaaah I am not sure.)

Re: Researchers!

[personal profile] solarhippie 2013-12-09 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hey, Billy," Karolina said, coming over when her own attempts at research weren't yielding much. Seriously, she needed to take a class on this stuff. "Are you trying to look into the new guys on the island too?"
solarhippie: ([neu] Lean on me.)

Re: Researchers!

[personal profile] solarhippie 2013-12-09 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Karolina chewed on her lip.

Okay, she could probably just come out and say it. "The... weird guys hanging around the island?"

Re: Researchers!

[identity profile] 1stinkinpercent.livejournal.com 2013-12-09 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"Then, we're looking for the same thing," Riley said, pointing to his laptop where about twenty different searches were occurring. "Pull up a chair and I'll show you a few quick tricks for finding stuff that's typically not on our internet."
solarhippie: ([neu] Do you need advice?)

Re: Researchers!

[personal profile] solarhippie 2013-12-09 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh thank heavens, someone who knew what they were doing. Karolina pulled up a chair for herself, almost looking relieved.

"I'm not very good at this computer stuff," she offered, with a wry little smile. "I have friends who do that."

Re: Researchers!

[identity profile] 1stinkinpercent.livejournal.com 2013-12-09 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
"And where I'm from, I am that friend," Riley said, sticking his pen behind his ear and pulling up a basic search engine.

Then, he went into a real quick spiel on how to go from that to several searches on networks that weren't readily available on their current internet. He made it as easy as he could.

"Wanna give it a try?"

Oh, Constantine was here, looking up new and obscure runes to paint on doors and by windows, because this whole thing smelled rotten.

Re: Talk to Shira

At one point in the day, Constantine swung by Shira's desk, plopping down a large box and a sign.

"No guns in the library," he reminded her, putting the sign next to the box. "I don't want the books getting ideas, and if anyone has a problem with that, you send them to me."

"Yeah. Call me untrustworthy, but anyone who calls this place boring has clearly not done their own research, and I'm not sure what kind of a sign that is," he said. "Have you found much of anything?"
solarhippie: ([neu] O rly?)

Re: Researchers!

[personal profile] solarhippie 2013-12-09 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Karolina shook her head. "No." Damn her lousy Google-fu! "Not even close. Have you?"
solarhippie: ([neu] Sassy.)

Re: Researchers!

[personal profile] solarhippie 2013-12-09 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, she was still kind of frowning at the computer half confused. "Well, I can try."

But it was still a learning experience, and hey, that'd distract her from her nerves, maybe!

Re: Researchers!

[identity profile] 1stinkinpercent.livejournal.com 2013-12-09 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"Not that hard," Riley said, turning his laptop towards her. "Go ahead and try it on mine. I'll watch and won't help unless you need it."

Re: Researchers!

[personal profile] solarhippie 2013-12-09 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"Okay," she said, and gave a little chuckle to her own skittishness. She reached for his laptop, and a moment of very focus later, she... had found some other company called Hyperion.

They sold shampoo.

[identity profile] 1stinkinpercent.livejournal.com 2013-12-09 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't think that's them," he said, scratching his cheek. "Unless they're really serious about shampoo."

Re: Researchers!

"Well, I haven't found anything blatantly awful about the Hyperion Corporation," Billy said. "But I also haven't found anything about them that didn't come from them, so I can't tell if their propaganda is better than everyone else's news or if they've actively suppressing information. Handsome Jack seems to be a well-liked guy though." Billy turned the monitor so Karolina could see the picture he'd found. "Unless he had that statue done himself, I mean."
