Parents' Weekend Evening Event - Saturday Evening Sock Hop

The student council folks had discussed events for Parents' Weekend and decided upon a sock hop at the community center.

So, the whole place was now kitschily appropriately decorated and very glittery, the refreshments were set out, and the music was playing.

There was also a large box of socks at the doorway, for those who felt their socks were too threadbare or too boring, who didn't have any socks, or who came from a world where socks didn't exist. None of the socks matched. Some seemed to be made of extremely odd materials. Some had capes and/or toes (not always five). Most were interesting color combinations. Nearly all had googly eyes that seemed to actually be looking around at things.

Hopefully they were at least good dancers?

Chris was at this dance too, Jim. So, look forward to being judged from a distance.

He'd skipped the socks, though. Starfleet captains didn't need to borrow them, thank you.

April gave the guy a nod. Mostly because he was seriously attractive. Actually, entirely because of that.

Also, she'd gotten into the punch, so.

"Sup."

"Sup," Chris returned delicately, a mix of amused by the outdated slang and concerned for the level of inebriation there.

"You have really good posture," April told him. Conversationally and all.

Chris had to pause for a moment, laughing slightly at the compliment. "Thanks. Are you here for one of the students?"

And not one of the students attempting to hit on someone old enough to be their father.

"Actually, I live here," April said, in an 'aw, shucks' tone that she usually reserved for messing with Jono or hitting on hot dads. So, this qualified. "I manage the pet shelter in town. The school keeps these events open to get some free chaperone labor out of the townies."

Or something. She wasn't at all certain that that was true.

"I take it you're visiting someone?"

"Yeah," he said, looking over at where Jim was chatting with a blonde girl. "Consider me cheap chaperone labor too."

"If you get bored, you can always go mad with power and start enforcing personal space minimums," April suggested, being an expert and all. "Or drink the punch. Guaranteed improved evening."

"I think I'll pass on the punch," he replied dryly. "You might consider doing the same."

Well, on having more punch at least.

"Who says I had any?" April pointed out, amused.

She had. The red plastic cup was still in her hand.

Chris looked down at her glass at that. Because really now.

"It's water," April objected. Lied, really. But she had no expectation of being believed.

Karolina couldn't help the urge to investigate this random adult who'd apparently ruined Jim's weekend.

But at least she did so looking more or less polite. "Mr. Pike?"

Re: Mingle!

[identity profile] whistlerealloud.livejournal.com 2013-10-05 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Be real, Karolina. He ruined his own things. Pike was just there to judge him until he fixed his life.

"Yes?"
solarhippie: ([neu] Do you need advice?)

"Hi, I'm Karolina." She didn't give non-teacher adults her last name. It was a thing. "I'm a friend of Jim's."

Re: Mingle!

[identity profile] whistlerealloud.livejournal.com 2013-10-05 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It could be considered a smart policy by some.

"Nice to meet you, Karolina," he replied with a genuine smile.
solarhippie: ([neu] Guys it might not work.)

Re: Mingle!

[personal profile] solarhippie 2013-10-05 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, you too." There was a certain politeness Karolina was probably never going to shake when she was talking to people she wasn't outright mad at. "I don't think Jim was very happy that you came here, though."

Re: Mingle!

[identity profile] whistlerealloud.livejournal.com 2013-10-05 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'd already gathered that when he stormed away last night," he replied dryly. Because that happened.
solarhippie: ([neu] Yeaaah I am not sure.)

Re: Mingle!

[personal profile] solarhippie 2013-10-05 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Karolina sighed. Quietly.

"He's not going to be his dad, you know."

A notion she knew quite a bit about, actually. In general.

Re: Mingle!

[identity profile] whistlerealloud.livejournal.com 2013-10-05 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Chris watched Karolina for a moment. "Is that what he thinks I'm here for?"
solarhippie: ([neu] O rly?)

Re: Mingle!

[personal profile] solarhippie 2013-10-05 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Karolina shrugged her shoulders. "I'm not sure what he thinks, exactly. I just know what I think based on what he told me."

Re: Mingle!

[identity profile] whistlerealloud.livejournal.com 2013-10-05 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"Look, I'm glad he has friends who will defend him, but this isn't a case of needing it."
solarhippie: ([neu] Glance.)

Re: Mingle!

[personal profile] solarhippie 2013-10-05 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
She was pretty sure he didn't get to be the judge of that.

But she wasn't particularly aggressive by nature. "I just wanted it known he has people who will do that."

Re: Mingle!

[identity profile] whistlerealloud.livejournal.com 2013-10-06 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
"Trust me, with that kid's charisma? I would never doubt it."

Which is why he needed to be on the command track at Starfleet. See?
solarhippie: ([neu] Self-protection.)

Re: Mingle!

[personal profile] solarhippie 2013-10-06 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Karolina might not have agreed. But then finding out your parents were villains could lead to some pretty heavy beliefs about choosing your own path.

She watched him for a second. "So... why are you here?"
