Janet flipped on the library lights, sat down behind the Collections Desk, and... Heck, it was Friday. She sort of started working.

"Is he okay?" she asked. "What happened?"

"Eighth was holding him hostage in the clearing."

"She was what?" Janet's jaw dropped. "That-- We need to do something about her. I have no idea what, though."

This was why she was the medical expert and not the tactician.

"She let him go, but I think she messed with his brain. You might want to check him out."

She sighed and closed the door behind her. "I don't know what she wanted, but I think I'm going to have to talk to her. And I had to tell Lee most of her story."

"I definitely want to check him out," said Janet. "Though it's going to have to wait until after I get back into town, since Liz and I are going back to Colorado this weekend for her exam." Janet groaned. "Oh, hell. I'm going to have to spend the whole time dodging Mackenzie."

"Most of her story?" asked Janet. She raised an eyebrow and looked curious. "Does that include the part of her story that involves you?"

"I told him that she was based on someone with a doctorate in astrophysics and military experience, but I didn't tell him she was the replicant version of my older self from whom I'd been cloned, no."

Sam shook her head. "But I did tell him that she was the main reason I was here. And, god, Janet, he looked at me like I was a hero. I almost broke right there, because whose fault is this if not mine?"

"You know, our identity crises are more confusing than most," said Janet. She sighed. "Lee may end up guessing the truth eventually. He's clever enough to put two and two together."

"Sam, you are a hero." Janet crossed her arms. "That's never once been in question in my mind. I know what you told me about her, and it doesn't change the fact that you did what you thought was right based on what you knew the situation to be." She shook her head. "How could you have possibly anticipated that someone with your memories could be so different from you?"

"I know he might," Sam admitted, "but I didn't want to tell him more than he needs to know." And, if she was being honest, she didn't want to see the look in his eyes when he found out she'd been cloned.

"Then I should have kept a closer eye on her here," she argued, "I knew what a danger she was, and I got lazy. I just never dreamed she'd go after Lee."

"If he figures something out, we'll deal with it," said Janet. "I think Lee might be one of the people around here we can trust."

"Sam, what are you going to do?" asked Janet. "Everyone knows she's evil. She was the faculty advisor for Angelus' little club. You don't bear sole blame for not keeping a close enough eye on her."

"I think we can," she agreed, "but you know how dangerous this information is. It's better for him if he doesn't know all of it."

Sam gave Janet a look. "I bear the blame for her entire existence, Janet."

"I agree," said Janet. "I don't think there's anyone here who knows the full story, though there are some who know a lot of it."

Janet gave Sam a look in return. "I hardly doubt you built a robot with your memories and sent it into replicator-controlled territory so that they could build an evil duplicate of you," she said.

"No, but I taught Fifth about betrayal. I followed O'Neill's orders even when I knew they were wrong, morally. He used that information and built Eighth."

"Sam, I read those reports," said Janet. "You couldn't have gotten out if you'd taken Fifth with you." She sighed. "I notice that you don't blame him for giving the order, just yourself for following it. You're not the sole factor involved in the replicators becoming a greater threat."

"He gave the order he had to give. Just as I had to follow it," Sam said, "but that doesn't make it right. And you'll notice that Fifth didn't make a copy of Jack O'Neill. He copied me."

"I'd be surprised if he hadn't chosen you to copy," said Janet. "Given that alien men have a tendency to have crushes on you rather than Jack."

Janet sighed. "Look, Sam, blame yourself all you want. I understand that I can't talk you out of it, no matter how much I'd like to. But you can't talk me into blaming you either, okay?"
