Janet flipped on the library lights, sat down behind the Collections Desk, and... Heck, it was Friday. She sort of started working.

Pippi slinks into the library to return the copy of Magical Water Plants of the Mediterranean (http://www.hp-lexicon.org/wizworld/books.html#Magical_Water_Plants_of_the_Mediterranean) which she checked out about a month ago.

"Hey," said Janet. "How's it going?"

She took the opportunity to look up the girl's name when she checked the book back in.

"So, Pippi, you realize that this book was due back two weeks ago, right?" asked Janet.

"Okay." she said, "I think it's late..." she motioned to the book.

"Yeah," she answered Janet, looking very sad, and nobody can look as sad as Pippi when Pippi is sad.

"It was a very good book. I brought money incase there's a fine. I'm sorry, I've never borrowed from a library before."

Janet grinned. "Of course there's a fine," she said. "But don't worry, it's not very much, only handwavey amount. See?"

Pippi has no idea how much that really. She takes a single coin (http://static.flickr.com/39/83702654_844d46d7c4.jpg?v=0) out of her pocket and plunks it down on the table. She's really just glad Janet isn't angry.

Janet really can't take advantage of a freshman like that. Though she'd love to know where Pippi had gotten ahold of a doubloon. "It's too much, actually," she said. "I'll tell you what. Bring in some candy for the library staff next week, and I'll cover the fine today, all right?"

"Okay, I can do that if you like. I'm particularly fond of caramels, how about you? Oh!"

She suddenly realises and starts digging around in her pockets.

"I got two of these (http://pics.livejournal.com/walter_n_wires/pic/0001hw8z) nasty little silver things which I can't abide if that would do instead. But I'll still bring the candy."

"I adore caramels," Janet assured her. She peered at the coins. "I don't recognize these coins, so I'm not sure I should accept them." She smiled and handed them back to Pippi. "It really is all right. The fine's not much, and caramels for the library aides will certainly be enough to cover it."
