Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was just as hazy, hot and humid as a typical July on the East Coast of the United States could get, but the sun was shining brightly, which was kind of a rarity this summer.

It wasn't raining anything weird, the teal deer were keeping to themselves in the Preserve, and another welcome picnic was underway complete with tables and chairs for chatting around and a buffet table filled (and then some) with all kinds of moddable summer treats.

The lists of new roommates, student siblings and teaching buddies were posted in a prominent location. Now all that was needed were people to enjoy the day!

[OOC: This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic will be in post two in an effort to stop our browsers from dying. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers and townies!

...and Emma's name was on the list. Okay, this was getting a bit too weird for her.

On the plus side though, at least there was a roof over her head until this mistake was fixed.

Finding out she had to have a roommate was the first real strike one against this place, and it sent Cordelia on a mission to find out exactly who Emma was as soon as possible.

"Emma?" she said, spotting the nametag. "Oh thank god, you're normal."

Emma was used to roommates, only having one was a step up from a couple of the group homes she's stayed in.

"Last time I checked." Though now she was wondering if Cordelia was normal if that was the first thing she said. "Cordelia?"

[identity profile] haslayers.livejournal.com 2013-07-06 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's me," Cordelia said brightly, oblivious to any wondering about her. "Just as a general rule, I'm probably going to need most of the closet and I don't share any of my clothes. So this whole picnic thing is different, huh?"
shippedtomaine: (Nope. No idea what you mean.)

Re: Meet Your Roommate [Summer 2013 - II]

[personal profile] shippedtomaine 2013-07-06 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Given all of Emma's clothes were either on her back or in her duffel closet space probably wasn't going to be an issue for a while.

She shrugged. "There's free food, not much else to care about."

"Emma, these are the people you're going to have to go to school with and see day in and day out," Cordelia explained. "There are popular friends to make." And potentially losers to stay away from but she couldn't say that for sure just yet.

Mira was actually kind of glad to see that she ended up rooming with the person with the most normal-sounding name on the list. She started looking around for this Mordin girl, all without realizing that Mordin was apparently a boy's name or that she was going to be in a room of Great Bioware Justice.

She hoped her lack of a nametag didn't confuse poor Mordin much.

Re: Meet Your Roommate [Summer 2013 - II]

[identity profile] sciencesalarian.livejournal.com 2013-07-06 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Mordin wandered around the picnic searching for the nametag reading 'Mira'.

The human he would have most contact with in close settings. He imagined from there would come the most usable data on human lifestyles.

Or perhaps the data would be an outlier? With the closeness afforded in a roommate situation, the data could be corrupted.

Didn't even know the parameters of data collection yet, but that didn't stop him from thinking of unacceptable margins of error.

Too early to tell, too early to tell. Must meet 'Mira' first.

Finally, having checked what he thought was every nametag twice, he just spoke aloud, hoping he would pronounce the name correctly. "Mira?"

"That's me. I guess I shouldn't have thrown the nametag away. People keep looking for me," Mira said. "You'd be Mordin?"

"Yes. Mordin Solus. Cohabitating with you, according to list. A pleasure to meet you, Mira."

"We'll see if you still think that after you've gotten to know me," Mira joked. "I'm going to go ahead and guess that you're not from this planet? Don't worry, I'm not either."

"You've made a joke. Indicative of decent temperment. Creating rapport. Imagine we will get along fine."

He held out his hand to shake, hoping that her customs were the same as the ones he had studied for Earth humans and he was not insulting her gravely.

"Have not met many spacebound humans. From Sur-Kesh, myself. Salarian homeworld."

Oh, this place was getting better and better. Now, he had to room with someone else? Mandel Academy, for all its many (MANY) faults, still had some pretty decent digs.

And now he was in a completely unfamiliar place with a big sibling and a roommate. He was going to be such pleasant company.

Really.

Flick really missed Jude right now. He hated feeling off guard.

"Flick?" Kathy had fallen into the same trap as had many students before her. She was looking around for a girl named Flick. Because why would she look for a guy? This was supposed to be her roommate. "Flick?"

"Present," Flick said, holding up a hand when he, once again, heard his name. "And accounted for, I guess."

"You're Flick?" Kathy didn't look as if she were entirely sure about the current situation. "As in 'staying in room 508' Flick?"

"Last time I checked," Flick replied, trying not to be amused at her reaction. Someone obviously hadn't expected him to answer to that time. "You know many other Flick's?"

"No, I don't really know any. But, uhh, I just assumed it was a girl, because she--well, you're my roommate." And Kathy had not expected to room with a boy. At all.

Her parents would freak.

Which was actually making her feel a little better about having a guy roommate. "Hi, I'm Kathy. But you probably already guessed that." What with the nametag and the room number and word roommate and all.

When Anna got around to checking the list to see if she'd been assigned a new roommate since Stacey moved out, she might be heard muttering to herself, "Well, Mavis is probably a girl's name."

Re: Meet Your Roommate [Summer 2013 - II]

[identity profile] callmemavy.livejournal.com 2013-07-06 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Hopefully for Anna's patience, she didn't get around to that check until dusk had fallen over the island, because that was when girls named Mavis got around to... being around. Or at least around to being awake, outdoors, and twenty feet away from any looming, tuxedo-clad figures in scarlet capes. ...Maybe fifteen feet? Mavis refused to look behind her to see how badly her father was pretending not to spy on her as she made her way past the table of strange-looking food toward the area where she'd picked up the sound of her name. Vampire hearing for the win.

"Definitely a girl's name!" she said to the girl in the white dress whose paleness rivaled her own. "And I'm that girl. Or one of them? It'd be weird if there were two Mavises here." Wait, what if there were? What if this was another Mavis and she'd just insulted her? "But not bad weird, totally cool weird, really! I love my name, and if you're Mavis too, don't worry, I'm really good at sharing. ...Also, babbling like a complete idiot. Hi."

[Advance apologies for slowest of slowplay eeeeeeeeever. Also, for unexpected coffin delivery to the dorm room sometime tonight, because the RNG loves irony.]

"Oh, hi!" Anna said. "Yes, I mean, no, I'm not Mavis, I'm Anna. I think I'm your new roommate." She gestured in the direction of the list. "Welcome to Fandom High!"

"Holy rabies, really?" Mavis, don't try to hug the complete stranger. There's excited and then there's too excited. "Oh wow, I've never had a roommate before. Do you know what number we're in? My dad won't stop freaking out about me staying in a different building from him, but maybe he'd calm down if he can give some orders, like where to deliver my coffin."

Anna was so startled at someone suddenly trying to hug her that she might have gone a little incorporeal there for a moment. Sorry about the hugging air, Mavis. "Um," she said, trying to pretend like that was a totally normal thing to have happen, "We're in room 205. I was already there, so I hope you don't mind the other side of the room. But I don't have much stuff, so there's plenty of room in the closets and whatever...uh. Did you say coffin?"

Was someone playing a joke on her? Was it Kenzi?

Mavis, for her part, blinked a little when solid suddenly became not, but her confusion cleared quickly enough. "Oh, are you a poltergeist?" Most ghosts around the castle didn't do bodies so much as mist or sheets or animating suits of armor, but some of the guests -- the ones who tended to pay extra for trashed hotel rooms -- were another story. "I thought you were a vampire like me, sorry!"
