Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was just as hazy, hot and humid as a typical July on the East Coast of the United States could get, but the sun was shining brightly, which was kind of a rarity this summer.

It wasn't raining anything weird, the teal deer were keeping to themselves in the Preserve, and another welcome picnic was underway complete with tables and chairs for chatting around and a buffet table filled (and then some) with all kinds of moddable summer treats.

The lists of new roommates, student siblings and teaching buddies were posted in a prominent location. Now all that was needed were people to enjoy the day!

[OOC: This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic will be in post two in an effort to stop our browsers from dying. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers and townies!

"We'll see if you still think that after you've gotten to know me," Mira joked. "I'm going to go ahead and guess that you're not from this planet? Don't worry, I'm not either."

"You've made a joke. Indicative of decent temperment. Creating rapport. Imagine we will get along fine."

He held out his hand to shake, hoping that her customs were the same as the ones he had studied for Earth humans and he was not insulting her gravely.

"Have not met many spacebound humans. From Sur-Kesh, myself. Salarian homeworld."

"I can't say I'm familiar with it. Or your people," Mira said, shaking Mordin's hand. "Ever hear of Nar Shaddaa? That's where I'm from."

Mordin didn't know the appropriate length of time to maintain a handshake. Was he supposed to talk over it, or was it a solemn affair? Variables he hadn't considered before they happened.

She seemed sympathetic to his foreign status, so he took a chance.

"Unfamiliar with Nar Shaddaa. Universe is a big place. Amazing place. Even more diverse than imagined. What is it like?"

"Big and diverse. But the only thing amazing about it is the amount of crime," Mira said. "Not that I'm complaining. I'm a bounty hunter, so the more scumbags there are, the more money I can make."

"Ah. Pardon supposition, but rather young to be a bounty hunter. At least by my estimation." Mordin would admit, though, that his estimation was not very reliable.

"No, you're right. But desperate times called and I turned out to be a prodigy at hunting people down for money," Mira said. "Some kids play musical instruments. I hit deadbeats with Bothan stunners."

"Now a student. Bounty hunting dirty work. Dangerous work. Understand why you were compelled to make the change."

That someone would want to spend their time doing anything other than learning was a foreign concept to Mordin.

"Oh, no, I'm here because one of my best clients is paying me more to be here than he would if I were bringing people in," Mira said. "He thinks it's safer here for now. I'm just in it for the money."

"Paid to be safe. Client must care very much for you. Or consider you very valuable." Mordin inhaled deeply. "Or both."

"Definitely the second one," Mira said. "Once I stop being useful, either the paycheck will get cut off, he'll call me back, or he'll send somebody to collect me. But in the meantime, I can't complain."

"Biding your time going to school," Mordin said. "Worse things to be paid to do."

Of course, not everyone had Mordin's priorities, but Mordin hadn't picked up on that about Mira yet, even if she'd made it abundantly clear.

"Well, I can't argue with you there," Mira said. Because there absolutely were worse things to do for money, especially on Nar Shaddaa. "So what's your story? Why are you going to school on small town Earth?"

"Humans new to my people when I come from. First contact was recent. Curious, by nature." Mordin gestured to himself. "Hoped to immerse myself in culture to learn. Basis of classes I chose."

"Okay, obvious follow up; what classes are you in?" Mira asked.

"Practical philosophy, introduction to meditation, and realistic etiquette. Took classes to learn about Earth customs. What did you choose?"

"That... is a very good question," Mira said. She reached into one of her belt pouches and pulled out a slip of paper. "Let's see. The one about charming people and hunting. Honestly, those are so on the nose that I should remember them. But I don't."

"Ah, classes to hone your expertise. Good choices, good choices." Mordin nodded, smiling. "Will not see you in classes, but suppose we will see enough of each other in the day."
