Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was just as hazy, hot and humid as a typical July on the East Coast of the United States could get, but the sun was shining brightly, which was kind of a rarity this summer.

It wasn't raining anything weird, the teal deer were keeping to themselves in the Preserve, and another welcome picnic was underway complete with tables and chairs for chatting around and a buffet table filled (and then some) with all kinds of moddable summer treats.

The lists of new roommates, student siblings and teaching buddies were posted in a prominent location. Now all that was needed were people to enjoy the day!

[OOC: This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic will be in post two in an effort to stop our browsers from dying. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers and townies!

"That's me," Cordelia said brightly, oblivious to any wondering about her. "Just as a general rule, I'm probably going to need most of the closet and I don't share any of my clothes. So this whole picnic thing is different, huh?"

Given all of Emma's clothes were either on her back or in her duffel closet space probably wasn't going to be an issue for a while.

She shrugged. "There's free food, not much else to care about."

"Emma, these are the people you're going to have to go to school with and see day in and day out," Cordelia explained. "There are popular friends to make." And potentially losers to stay away from but she couldn't say that for sure just yet.

That would be important advice if Emma cared about being popular, or thought she was staying long enough for what people thought of her to matter.

"They'll still be here tomorrow." The food wouldn't. "Besides it's not like you'll be shunned if you don't find the popular crow immediately."

No matter how many schools Emma had gone to, people always wanted to be friends with girls who looked like Cordelia.

"Oh, of course not, but it's always good to make a good first impression. And a second impression, and maybe a third, because you never know when someone's inner psycho might come out."

Buffy.

"Well, no, you don't." Which would be another reason she was focusing on food over friends.

"It's so good that we agree on this," Cordelia decided, again ignoring that Emma didn't seem to be as into this as she was. "So. Tell me about you."

Normally she wouldn't really care about the other person, but that whole 'psycho' thing reminded her that maybe she should find out who she was living with. Since Cordelia knew she was totally normal and fantastic.

"Not much to say." Or at least not much Emma felt like sharing. "Born in Maine, moved around a lot, Baltimore most recently. Sixteen in the fall."

There was only one actual lie in there. One and a half if you counted using 'born' instead of 'found'.

"Maine. That's..." Did she have anything good to say about Maine? "I'm from California. Little town. That's kind of the same."

No, it wasn't.

Emma considered pointing out the difference between a town and a state, but it really wasn't worth the effort. "Probably warmer though."

Small town in California was totally the same thing as any town in Maine, right? Logic!

"Oh, definitely. I mean, sure, nothing good happens there ever, but at least there's a beach," she nodded.
shippedtomaine: (Uh...what?)

[personal profile] shippedtomaine 2013-07-06 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Well there was one town that apparently had a good chunk of another world's population living in it but she wasn't going to know about that for a good long while.

Oh, like Emma expected good things to happen to her ever. "There's a beach here, apparently."

"Oh, good. We should totally check it out soon. It's great beach weather and there's a lot of sun to be had..."

This was what happened when Cordelia decided she could be friendly to you.

Emma wondered if she might soon long for the days of barely disguised tolerance.

"Yes, we could totally do that." So long as she wasn't expected to get in the water or wear a swim suit that could possibly work.
