Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was just as hazy, hot and humid as a typical July on the East Coast of the United States could get, but the sun was shining brightly, which was kind of a rarity this summer.

It wasn't raining anything weird, the teal deer were keeping to themselves in the Preserve, and another welcome picnic was underway complete with tables and chairs for chatting around and a buffet table filled (and then some) with all kinds of moddable summer treats.

The lists of new roommates, student siblings and teaching buddies were posted in a prominent location. Now all that was needed were people to enjoy the day!

[OOC: This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic will be in post two in an effort to stop our browsers from dying. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers and townies!

"You're Flick?" Kathy didn't look as if she were entirely sure about the current situation. "As in 'staying in room 508' Flick?"

"Last time I checked," Flick replied, trying not to be amused at her reaction. Someone obviously hadn't expected him to answer to that time. "You know many other Flick's?"

"No, I don't really know any. But, uhh, I just assumed it was a girl, because she--well, you're my roommate." And Kathy had not expected to room with a boy. At all.

Her parents would freak.

Which was actually making her feel a little better about having a guy roommate. "Hi, I'm Kathy. But you probably already guessed that." What with the nametag and the room number and word roommate and all.

"You can trade me in for a female model, if you want," Flick said airily but didn't sound unkind. "I'm sure someone else would make a better roommate than me anyway."

"Oh, no, I'm sure you're fine," Kathy said quickly. She didn't want him to think she was rejecting him out of hand or anything. "Just surprised. Sorry!"

"It's okay," he said, waving her apology away. It wasn't warranted in the first place. He understood shocked. "I promise, I'll be inconspicuous."

He'd just have to not cry at night when he talked to his brother. If he talked to his brother.

"It's just as much your room," Kathy said, because she didn't want him to think he was stuck rooming with some kind of spoiled prima donna or anything. "I'm sure we'll be fine together. I've never done the whole roommate thing before, but I'm a quick learner and I'm not gonna make you feel unwelcome in your own room or anything!"

She gave him a tentative grin. "No bras left to dry on your side or anything like that."

That drew a brief laugh out of Flick.

"Appreciate that," he said, nodding slightly. "I'm sure we'll be fine. I'm pretty inexperienced with roommates so I'll be learning as I go."

"Well, it can't be that hard to work out, right?" Kathy said. "We probably have a few weeks to figure it out before either of us gets popular enough to throw really loud room parties until dawn."

She really didn't think that would be happening. At least not with her.

Yeah, she wasn't going to have to worry about that with him either. He wasn't big on parties. He'd lived through enough of his father's parties to get sick of them.

"I'm not really a party guy but if I promise, I'll warn you if I ever get the urge to bring the house down with a kegger."

"Neither am I, so I'll probably be able to keep my insane slumber party urges under control," Kathy said, dimpling a little. "But if that ever does happen, you're absolutely invited."
