BWI Airport Lounge, Saturday Morning

Kathy should have been tired as she made her way to the lounge with the bright and glittery Fandom High banner. Even for someone who considered herself a morning person, the time she'd had to get up to catch her flight out of LAX had been obscene. Excitement had kept her awake on the plane. Excitement and energy drinks were keeping her jittering around while she waited for the shuttle.

Lots of excitement. Lots of energy drinks. Lots of jittering.

She hoped that other people would show up soon. Otherwise, she'd probably end up doing an impromptu gymnastics routine, just to burn off some of that extra energy.

Mira was traveling light today. Just the mostly-leather clothes she was wearing, her wrist launcher, and whatever she could fit in a small duffel. (She was a non-royal Star Wars character. Like they changed clothes ever.)

She made her way over toward the Fandom High banner, slunk into a seat, and gave a casual wave at the jittery girl over there.

"Hi!" Kathy practically shouted, then made a face. "Err, sorry. I'm not usually so loud."

In fact, she was used to being the quiet girl off in the corner. Lately, though, she'd been feeling a lot more energetic than usual.

"New student, too?"

"I'll let my eardrums be the judge of that," Mira said. "And yep. I'm Mira, and I just came through the portal. Also, I'm surprised that people here travel by portals. What's with that?"

"Portals?" Kathy had no idea what Mira was talking about. Sure, she'd heard of portals, but only in sci-fi movies and comicbooks. "I came by airplane?"

"I used something called Portalocity. Never heard of it before, but it was that or charter a ship, and intergalactic flights are cost prohibitive," Mira mused.

"Ooookay," Kathy said, struggling to understand a moment. And then she did and her face fell and her voice turned flat. "Oh. I get it. Ha ha. Right, portals and intergalactic flights. Were you worried there wouldn't be anywhere to dock your spaceship, too?"

Emma wasn't so much waiting for the shuttle as waiting for the security guard who'd started following her to lose interest now that she was standing by a group of other teenagers.

Maybe having another teenager bound over and say hello would help?

Because that was what Kathy was doing. "Hey," she said, managing to tone down the enthusiasm enough so that she wasn't yelling in the other girl's face, at least. "Here for the Fandom Shuttle?"

Well it could hardly hurt, what with the guard still watching her. "Uh, yeah. This is the right place, right?" What kind of name was Fandom anyway?

"Yup!" Kathy pointed to the glittery banner above them. "I double-checked just to be safe and the guy at the smoothie stand said that the shuttle always came right here."

He also muttered something about a weirdo in pajamas, but Kathy wasn't sure what that had been about.

Well, that was a lot of glitter right there. "That's convenient then." If only because they'd be unlikely to notice any one particular teen passing through.

Even Kathy thought it was a lot of glitter, and she'd be running around in a rainbow gi in a few weeks. Fandom went all out for these kinds of things.

"I take it you're new, too?" she asked. "Hi, I'm Kathy Li. Nice to meet you."

"Hi. Don't mind that girl. Not all of us are super excited to go to summer school," Mira said. "And by 'not all of us,' I specifically mean me, and probably most other people. But I'm making assumptions."

Emma shrugged. "Well, you know, camp, supposed to be fun." Or so she'd heard from people who'd actually been.

"Maybe it's just because I'm less familiar with summer camp and more familiar with boot camp, but I'm wary," Mira said. "But more accurately, I'm Mira."

"Emma." She'd just leave last names out of it as long as possible. Lots of Emmas in the world. "I wouldn't know the difference." Since boot camp cost just as much as the regular kind.

That was fine by Mira, who didn't use a last name at all anyway. "Well, the way I understand it, one involves climbing ropes for fun and the other involves climbing ropes for work. That's the main difference."

On the way to Fandom

"If you're going to Fandom, your ride is this way," Jack announced loudly at the appointed hour, when it seemed like everyone who needed to be on the van was there. If he was privately amused that he'd ended up driving the shuttle instead of any of the modern teachers -- well, it didn't show. Much.

"I promise not to lose any of you before we get to the island."

"Is it far?" Kathy asked, hoisting her suitcase behind her. "I tried finding Fandom Island on Google maps back home, but it wouldn't pull up."

Not that she'd mentioned that to her parents. Her mother had already been dubious about the whole venture.

"it can be funny that way," Jack commiserated. "But no, it's not so far. An hour or so, depending on traffic."

He gave the girl a brief, curious look. He always wondered whether new students had the first clue what they were in for. "I'm Jack," he added. "2010 graduate, teacher -- and today I drive a van."

Kathy paused at that, trying not to wince. "I, uhh, heard that the job market around here can be pretty tough," she said politely.

While worrying about going to a school where their graduates drove vans for a living. Her father would be furious if he heard something like that.

"I'm Kathy. Kathy Li. Technically Katherine, but only my parents call me that."

Jack laughed at that, loud and sudden. "The job I actually earn money doing is managing a nightclub," he explained, managing not to sound too patronizing. "Teaching's a sideline. The van-driving is entirely voluntary. And it's lovely to meet you, Kathy-not-Katherine. How was your trip in?"
