BWI Airport Lounge, Saturday Morning

Kathy should have been tired as she made her way to the lounge with the bright and glittery Fandom High banner. Even for someone who considered herself a morning person, the time she'd had to get up to catch her flight out of LAX had been obscene. Excitement had kept her awake on the plane. Excitement and energy drinks were keeping her jittering around while she waited for the shuttle.

Lots of excitement. Lots of energy drinks. Lots of jittering.

She hoped that other people would show up soon. Otherwise, she'd probably end up doing an impromptu gymnastics routine, just to burn off some of that extra energy.

"Portals?" Kathy had no idea what Mira was talking about. Sure, she'd heard of portals, but only in sci-fi movies and comicbooks. "I came by airplane?"

"I used something called Portalocity. Never heard of it before, but it was that or charter a ship, and intergalactic flights are cost prohibitive," Mira mused.

"Ooookay," Kathy said, struggling to understand a moment. And then she did and her face fell and her voice turned flat. "Oh. I get it. Ha ha. Right, portals and intergalactic flights. Were you worried there wouldn't be anywhere to dock your spaceship, too?"

"I don't know about you, but I don't know that many teenagers who can afford their own spaceships," Mira said, not realizing that she was the only one being serious at the moment. Well, as serious as she got at times like this. Serious but snarky. "And, well, you know Nar Shaddaa, right? Wait, different galaxy, so you probably don't. Basic idea is that if I had a spaceship, it wouldn't be long before somebody tried taking it away."

"It's not the lack of money that keeps most of the kids I know from having spaceships," Kathy said, unimpressed. As far as practical jokes went, this one was falling pretty flat. "After the tourism trade with Mars dried up, it seemed kind of pointless."

"I'm not familiar with your galaxy. How far away is Mars?" Mira asked.

"How long are we going to keep playing at this?" Kathy asked. "Or did you just watch too much Mister What on too little sleep?"

"Playing at what?" Mira asked. "And what's Mister What? I feel like I'm saying 'what' a lot."

"Come on," Kathy said, tapping her foot. "You don't really expect me to believe you're some kind of space alien, do you? From some galaxy far, far away? If you're going to lie about stuff, don't pick something stupid."

"Wait, you're not telling me that this world doesn't have interstellar travel, are you?" Mira asked. "And just so it's completely clear, I do expect you to believe I'm from space, because I am."

"Interstellar?" Kathy snarked, ignoring the other's girl ridiculous claim entirely. "It's been almost sixty years since we managed to make it to the moon. But, sure, you're from beyond the heliosphere. Right."

"Right," Kathy said, rolling her eyes. "You just keep pretending to be a space alien then. I'll just be over here. If anyone asks, I'm a superhero."

"One, I'm a space human technically," Mira pointed out. "Second, I have no idea what a superhero is. I assume that's a local thing?"

"It's a made up thing," Kathy snapped. "And how can you be a space human? That doesn't even make sense! How is your biology the same if you're from another galaxy entirely? How are you speaking English?"

LA might have a spate of people getting superpowers, but there weren't aliens. That would be silly!

"Why are you speaking Basic?" Mira asked. "We've been using this language for at least twenty thousand years. Since you can't even get past your moon, I'm guessing your culture isn't that old. So, Basic wins."

"Okay, let's pretend for five seconds that everything you're saying makes total and complete sense," Kathy said, rolling her eyes. "Proof? Some kind of cool space alien gadget? Anything that could possibly show that you're not just some kid with a predilection for leather and cheesy movies?"

"Look. Portalocity gave me a travel advisory that said very clearly to keep all of my weapons securely out of sight until I was clear of the airport," Mira said. "I already had to talk my way past one security guard who didn't like the look of this thing on my wrist." Mira held her arm up to show off her wrist launcher.

"And that's with all of my ammo being safely stored right now. So don't mind me if I'm not in a rush to attract the wrong kind of attention right now.""

"Convenient, that."

Kathy wouldn't have wanted a live demonstration of alien weaponry anyway, but right now it was just one more tick under the bullshit column.

"And you don't have anything that's not a weapon?"

Great. Violent and crazy. Maybe it wasn't too late to decide her mom was right all along and she should have stayed at home.

Kathy reached into her purse and pulled out her passport. She wasn't old enough to drive and her parents refused to let her leave home without some kind of ID, so her passport had been packed along with her. (She also had copies of her birth certificate and her social security card because her parents were paranoid paranoid.) "I even have stamps from the times we visited my grandparents in Korea," she said, holding it out for Mira to see.

"I have no idea what Korea is and that could have been faked," Mira pointed out. "Not so easy, is it?"

"Except I could get an atlas from the airport bookstore to show you where Korea is and I didn't accuse you of faking anything," Kathy argued. "You didn't have anything to show at all."

Kathy threw up her hands in the air. "Forget it. This is so not worth arguing you about. Whether you're playing some stupid game or just freaking delusional, I've got better things to do."

Like stalking off to another seat and pulling out a book. That'd sure show her!
