Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Whoever worked their magic to ensure that the welcome picnics had nice weather had cut their mojo very close this time around. The weather was lovely today - sunny and hot enough to make it clear that summer in Fandom had finally begun - but the overnight thunderstorms had left puddles all over the lawn that hadn't quite dried up yet.

Still, the tables and chairs had managed to be scattered around, along with the buffet table of moddable food and drinks, and the information table with name tags, the Big and Little Sibling list, and the list of new roommates. The only thing missing was people to enjoy the festivities!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Alright, so that gave Gert a good jumping-off point. "So, turns out, there's a whole bunch of different worlds," she said. "Dimensions or whatever you want to call them. And people here are all pretty much from different ones."

She scanned the crowd, looking for a good example of this point. Spotting Pinkie Pie, she decided to go with a classic. "See the pony? Probably not from your world. Definitely not mine."

Alex stared at the pony for a moment. Yeah, that was different. "Not so much from mine either."

Wait, was she going along with this? The pony was kind of hard to ignore.

"You're completely serious about this." It wasn't even a question.

"Yep," Gert affirmed. "And the worlds are all pretty different. There's pony worlds, worlds full of space travelers, worlds full of superheroes, you name it. Even worlds with futuristic telepathic dinosaurs."

With that, Old Lace trotted over, and sniffed curiously at Alex. So, there was some proof.

Alex jumped back slightly, startled because dinosaur! But it seemed like a friendly dinosaur. She wasn't sure which was weirder? The dinosaur being here at all, or the fact it didn't seem to want to eat her?

What did one say to friendly dinosaurs? "Uh...hi?"

What kind of place did Nikita send her to?

"She's mine," Gert added, because that was maybe something to mention here. "Her name's Old Lace, she doesn't bite, and she's just an extra example of how weird this place is."

Old Lace made a soft, indignant noise.

"Anyway, so there're also people from different points in time, too," she continued. "Pretty sure I know at least one guy from the twenty-second century or so. It's 2013 here, for the record."

Alex was still stuck on dinosaur. "I can honestly say I've never been anywhere like this before."

Probably most people could say that.

"That makes--" Gert scanned the crowd to do a general approximation of how many people there were-- "like, fifty to a hundred of us. Don't worry about it."

She paused, took a breath, and asked, "Do you want the rest of the rundown or do you need a break? The rest of it is scarier, I should warn you."

"You can give me the rest. I can take it." Still, she braced herself.

"So, on top of this just being a weird place full of weird people, there's some pretty weird stuff that happens from time to time," Gert reported. "Like, you might turn into a lizard or a guy for a weekend at some point. Or everyone in town might be teleported to a cave full of monsters for a while. It's pretty shitty, but you should be aware."

All of this sounded so insane, but so did a dinosaur and weird places and times. She went with it, mostly because she kind of had to. It wasn't like she was going anywhere for awhile.

"A cave full of monsters. Sounds like you speak from experience." It was an observation more than a question.

"It was a dungeon," Gert admitted, "But otherwise, yeah, pretty much."

Sorry, Alex?

All Alex could do was tell herself she'd been through so a lot already. There wasn't much she couldn't handle. "Well, I guess it's better to be aware than not to be."

"Basically," Gert agreed. "So... yeah. Be on the lookout for that."

Hm. Was there anything else she should say?

"Other than that, I'm in 229 if you ever need to find me," she added. "And my number's 555-4378."

"If I have any more questions, I know who to ask. Thanks," Alex said appreciatively. "I guess I'll just have to embrace the weird."

"Good luck with that," Gert said sincerely. "It might be a while yet. Just warning you."

"Thanks for the warning," Alex added. "So, I guess I'll see you around."

Apparently, she had more weirdness to explore. Or something.

"Almost definitely," Gert assured her. "The class schedules here are pretty relaxed. There's a lot of social time."
