Detention, the Danger Shop, Saturday

It'd taken some reshuffling of schedules to get the Danger Shop at all - or plan a detention, for that matter. Still, Kaidan had gotten it eventually.

He'd always figured regular school detention (not brain camp detention) was a lot more writing of lines and sitting quietly in a room, but the people at the office had quickly disabused him of the notion. Most detention-givers at this school were apparently quote-unquote creative. Kaidan wasn't sure if he could live up to that, exactly, but he could definitely use one or two things he'd learned in bootcamp around here.

Which meant, sorry, Cade and Sparkle, you were going to arrive to a room set up as a military obstacle course. Arranged in a circle. Oh dear.

"You're going to be doing this thing four times," Kaidan said pleasantly. "You fail an obstacle, you go back and try again. Good luck."

Good luck, boys. There are ropes. And ladders. And walls without ladders. And extremely muddy pools. In fact, one of the obstacles involves climbing over a fake camel in a muddy pool, because very occasionally, Kaidan has a sense of humor.

Feel free to complain at each other as you go. It won't help.

Hop over horizontal telephone poles. There are a bunch of them.

Okay, jumping wasn't so bad. Sparkle could handle jumping. It wasn't like he sat still on a good day anyhow, right? If anything was going to trip him up up, it probably wasn't going to happen until after his second or third go around the rest of the course.

He still didn't regret stealing that camel, damn it.

This reminded him of early mornings at the Academy--hardly his favorite memories.

He hopped over the poles with far more agility than normally let on that he had.

Not quite as high as it would be for a regular obstacle course, because Kaidan was a nice guy, but you're still going to have to pull yourself up and climb over this bar.

"Crap."

Okay, he could get over this. He totally could. Right? It was just a bar, for crying out loud. Just a thing to get himself over, and it was kinda low.

It took him a few fumbles all the same before he figured out the knack of getting over this, and by then he was huffing a little, since he'd fucked up and had to go back and do the low jumps again.

It's a wall of logs. You have to climb over it. Somehow.

So, at least this was something Sparkle could manage, since there were footholds, of a sort, where one log met the next. Climbing over fences and things that he wasn't supposed to get over was kind of what Sparkle did.

His arms were a bit noodly after the bar, but he was going to persevere, damn it.

Cade scrambled up and over the wall since, yeah, when you were looking for cover in a firefight, you got pretty adept at getting over things most people weren't going to climb.

There's a camel standing in a puddle full of mud. You're going to have to hop over it.

Don't worry, it won't move, since it's fake. But be careful anyway.

And now he was caked with mud to the knees and hating everything. Why were camels so damn tall?

Well... Up and over he went. Even if he kind of got stuck halfway over and sort of slid forward off the other side.

Okay, so he was caked with mud straight up his front. And he had to do this three more times? Goddamn it.

"Hopping" implied much more grace than whatever it was Cade was doing.

"Stoopa karking camel," Cade muttered to himself as he climbed over the thing the first time.

His next trips got even more profane.

It's a log at chest height. You're going to have to jump on and roll over.

Chest height wouldn't be so bad, generally, if not for the fact that Sparkle was covered in mud. Just getting a grip on the damn thing was...

Well, he slid backward on his first attempt, and had to go back and repeat all the other stuff. Again. He got it on his second try, at least.

This looked a lot like how Cade had gotten over the camel, but involved slightly more splinters in his hand.

And mud on his everything. Yick.

This is a series of 20 feet high ropes that each participant must climb and touch the top of the rope before lowering themselves back to the ground.

"This is not actually encouraging me to get an honest job someday as someone who gets by on the merits of manual labour," Sparkle grumbled as he attempted to climb the rope.

He was going to spend the rest of the day right here, wasn't he? Getting about ten feet up the rope and then sliding back down it again, slogging back to the start, doing it all over again, and silently plotting the demise of whoever the hell invented ropes in the first place.

Cade failed absolutely at the rope climb and had to repeat the entire rest of the course before trying it again.

It was a good thing Kaidan couldn't read his mind--there was nothing polite being said about him at all in there.

And now you get to climb under netting. Through mud.

"Fuck it. Why not. I'm already covered in it. Mud's good for the skin."

Really, the crawling under the ropes was possibly his favourite part of this course. Even if he was sodden with mud by this point, it didn't involve lifting himself up.

Cade was just going to take a three second nap under there.

In the mud.

Or that was the plan until some bug...thing...climbed onto his cheek and then Cade was moving way faster than he wanted people to know he could.

Just 400 feet of nothing but running.

Running wasn't so bad, at least after the mud crawl gave Sparkle a tiny bit of a breather. He'd done plenty of running, mostly from cops, over the years. He was back to gasping and out of breath by the end of this, fucking smoking, but it was way less brutal than that stupid rope had been.
