Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There was the bonfire for everyone who thought Maryland in January was a little too cool for their taste, as well as the moddable warm food and drinks, and chairs and tables in the school colors of blue and gold. Some tables were also set a little further away from the crowds.

Because there were always people who preferred the fringes.

Arietty had grabbed herself a large Cheeto and grabbed herself a spot not too near the bonfire. It was a bit like a bean hanging out by an actively erupting volcano, but Arietty was a bit of an adrenaline junky and it was really, really pretty.

Hopefully her dress, made from a long piece of shiny reflective safety tape, would make her visible enough not to get stepped on by an inattentive bean while she munched on her snack.

Eating, drinking, being merry. Atton was fond of each of these things-- almost as fond as he was at using them to hide the fact he was scoping out all the new kids very, very closely.

It just looked like he was kicking back with his feet on a picnic table drinking something from an unmarked bottle.

Peter was keeping an eye out in a pretty transparent way, but that was half the point; it might draw people out to come and talk to him.

He'd collected a small amount of food items on one plate, which he held in his hand as he perused the people rather than the buffet.

Liara had gone back and forth on coming here for hours.

Eventually, she did show up, thick volume on the history of human space travel in hand. She sat down under a tree and read quietly.

Natalie was here largely for the free food. It was the only reason she wasn't at the very edges of where the action was. Or, indeed, back in her room at the dorms.

Still, she eyed the crowd and singled out the new people, even if she didn't look particularly interested.

Mercy helped herself to a plate of food and made her way over by the bonfire for a while to enjoy the warmth and the beauty of the fire.

She was eager to see who had ended up in Fandom this time around.

Mercy smiled at her. "Hey, how are the cars running?"

Arietty looked up with a grin. "Great! Eggletina appreciates the break, too."

"I'll bet! She probably isn't a big fan of the cold either." Mercy smiled at her. "If you ever need a hand getting around in the snow or anything, though, just let me know."

Cade was there for the free food (as evidenced by the knapsack he was filling with crackers and cheese when no one was paying attention), with an additional eye out for any cute new girls or potentially stupid rich people who wouldn't miss their stuff.

He wasn't wearing a coat despite the weather because Cade was just that stupid badass.

Arietty's eyes went wide. "I didn't even think about snow! I mean, I've seen it, but it was only a little and we were near the Underground. . . ."

Rilla (well bundled and with her infamous green hat on her head) and Jims (equally bundled, with much less horrifying headgear) had found a spot near a tree to sit and watch for new students. Rilla had a basket of muffins with her (yes, she knew there was an extensive buffet but Susan hadn't trusted the idea of food made by Yankees) and a sign next to it:

FREE SWEETS FOR NEWCOMERS!

Now to stop Jims from eating dead leaves...

"I'm just trying to be accessible for conversation," Peter said casually. "Who knows what shocks these guys might have gone through on their way here?"

He bit into a chip.

"We don't get nearly as much here as back home," Mercy said, "but sometimes we get a bunch."

"Don't worry, though. You can pretty much get by without having to go out and like I said, if you want, I'd be glad to bring you places."

Peter stuck one hand back into the pocket of his (nicely tailored) pants. "Oh, come on," he said, "I can't juggle things with my mind or turn into some kind of snaggle-toothed monster. That makes me a calming factor."

"Okay," Natalie said. Not necessarily believing him, but that didn't matter. "Personally I'm looking to seem as unapproachable as possible."

That may have been a joke. But it was always difficult to tell with her.
