Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There was the bonfire for everyone who thought Maryland in January was a little too cool for their taste, as well as the moddable warm food and drinks, and chairs and tables in the school colors of blue and gold. Some tables were also set a little further away from the crowds.

Because there were always people who preferred the fringes.

Eating, drinking, being merry. Atton was fond of each of these things-- almost as fond as he was at using them to hide the fact he was scoping out all the new kids very, very closely.

It just looked like he was kicking back with his feet on a picnic table drinking something from an unmarked bottle.

It almost felt necessary to find Atton at these sorts of things by that point, so he probably shouldn't have been surprised to see Sia take a seat at the table, away from his feet. "Made any new friends yet?"

"Can't say that I have," Atton said, taking a sip from his bottle. "So I think I'm doing okay so far."

"Why do you come to these, then?" she wondered. "Just to watch? Or the free food?"

To keep an eye on potential threats. "Just the free food," Atton agreed, reaching over to pry a fry off his plate. "Why do you show up?"

"Lucky you," Atton muttered, "I met Jessica when someone moved her into my room. Hoping not to repeat that one."

"It would be a bit cramped..." she said, because sometimes she liked poking him.

Atton pulled a face. "Hey, it's enough of a pain in the ass that I have to keep my pants on all the time," he said. "If someone else shows up, I might never take off my jacket again."

"Atton Thelonius Rand," Jessica said mock-disapprovingly, making up a middle name for emphasis as she took a seat. "Drinking at a picnic. You better not peer pressure any impressionable new people."

He was drinking water, but he wasn't about to point that out. "Why not?" Atton fake-complained. "That's half the fun of these things."

Honestly, she would be hassling him exactly the same way even if she had known. It was fun to hassle Atton, after all. "You say that now. But in five years when there's a middle-school anti-drug assembly where the villain is inspired by you, how are you going to feel?"

"And for the record, I'd probably write it and it would be horrible, but it's for a middle school so who cares? All of those things are horrible."

"I'm probably going to feel pretty good," Atton said, "Living thousands of miles from here and maybe sunning myself. Couldn't care less."

"I really should have thought of a plan B before coming out with my assembly play plan," Jessica said. "You win this round, Rand."

"Pure pazaak," Atton deemed it. "So don't you have some little sibling or whatever to bother?"

...It was a roundabout way of asking after her day!

"Nope! The school decided I'm fine as an only child," Jessica said. "So I'm free to bother you as much as I want and you can stand."

"Somehow I think the 'you want' part's more important than you than the 'stand' part," Atton concluded. "But hey, I'm going to have to deal with it even if I go back to the dorms, so do your worst."

That bottle was pretty much all that caught Emily's attention.

"Hey there. You look like you're having a good time." Somehow Emily managed to tear her eyes from the bottle and look at him in the face.

"There's free food," he pointed out, "What's not to enjoy?"

His drinking was making all the right impressions in all the wrong ways. It couldn't be better.

Looking at the food as if she hadn't seen it before, she hummed a bit. "They really go all out with this stuff, huh?"

It was a miracle what a little water in a conspicuously unmarked bottle could do for your reputation! "Same thing every semester," Atton confirmed, "And that's skipping over all the good stuff they roll out for the dances. I don't know who you are, but you really fell into the right part of the universe."

Just as how it was a wonder how a carving for hard liquor could help someone start a conversation! Life had such funny ways. "Dances." She had never been in one. Well, she had never been in many, many things. "Could be fun." Somehow Emily was pretty sure she would hate every minute of it though.

"I'm Emily Thorne, and I certainly hope you're right." She would offer a handshake, but something stopped her from making physical contact. So, a little wave it was. And the smile was still on.

Atton gave a kind of half-hearted wave back in return. Look, he didn't do cheery, all right?

"Atton Rand," he offered. "And I haven't had any reason to complain so far."

... wrong. But then it didn't take him a lot of effort to find something to complain about.

Her face would hurt later after all the cheery. She really didn't need cheery.

"Well then, either the weirdness of this place has been greatly exaggerated or you really know how to handle weird stuff." Going by Jessica's advice? The second. But back at the subject at hand.

"So what is that you're drinking, or otherwise where can I find the suspicious-looking wrapped up soda?" She wanted a drink, but she hadn't forgotten this was a school. Even without being on a school ever before, Emily knew there were showoffs.

"Just a little pick-me-up," Atton said smoothly. "Pretty much out, though, which makes me think it's time to pack up this picnic and go."

He slammed back the last gulp of... water and put the bottle down. "As for the weird stuff... trust me, compared to where I come from, it could be a lot worse."

There could be Sith, for one!
