Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There was the bonfire for everyone who thought Maryland in January was a little too cool for their taste, as well as the moddable warm food and drinks, and chairs and tables in the school colors of blue and gold. Some tables were also set a little further away from the crowds.

Because there were always people who preferred the fringes.

[OCD up! This is the FIRST post for general mingling. Please use this post first, if your browser can handle the comment load. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here and there's more room for mingling here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Rilla (well bundled and with her infamous green hat on her head) and Jims (equally bundled, with much less horrifying headgear) had found a spot near a tree to sit and watch for new students. Rilla had a basket of muffins with her (yes, she knew there was an extensive buffet but Susan hadn't trusted the idea of food made by Yankees) and a sign next to it:

FREE SWEETS FOR NEWCOMERS!

Now to stop Jims from eating dead leaves...

"Oh my gosh," Karina said, once the sign had caught her attention and the baby held it. "You got stuck with babysitting on new kid day?"

That was so unfair. Poor girl!

"I get to babysit him every day," Rilla said, smiling a little wryly. "This is Jims. I'm taking care of him while his father's at war."

Karina flushed a little. "Oh! Whoops. I guess you're used to it then! I'm Karina," she added, "and new, which is probably obvious."

A beat.

"...War?"

"The Great War," Rilla said. "I'm from 1915."

"Right," Karina said, "Jeremy said something about this being a thing. Hopefully, uh, all will go well and Jims will get his dad back soon. I'm Karina, by the way. Sorry I didn't say before."

"It's very nice to meet you," Rilla said. "I'm Rilla. Would you like a muffin? I brought them from home with me."

Lucrezia couldn't help beaming at the smaller of the two bundles, or his affinity for leaves, either.

"How old is he?" she asked, turning her attention to Rilla with a light smile.

"Almost eighteen months old," Rilla said proudly, patting Jims' head.

"They grow so fast," Lucrezia sighed. "Every time I see my nephew, I swear he's twice as big. And three times as beautiful."

"Jims has curls and dimples," Rilla said, beaming. "And he accidentally painted a seat cushion with molasses over the holidays, but I'm sure if he was properly channeled, he'd make a wonderful artist."

"A genius, to be sure," Lucrezia grinned. "My Juanito, he bounces to himself when he grows excited, and he loves to take fistfuls of hair and shove them into his mouth. He shan't be content to sit in one place and allow life to happen to him."

In other words, a Borgia.

"Jims has--quite fortunately--finally outgrown the yank people until they're bald stage," Rilla confided. "Though I wish the stage of eating everything would come to an end sooner!"

"I was here during Juanito's experiences with colic," Lucrezia said, shaking her head. "To here Cesare describe it, he cried for days at a time. One's heart breaks. If only they could speak, perhaps what's ailing them might be solved."

That presumed the child in question knew, of course.

"It would certainly speed things along," Rilla admitted. "I have a wonderful book written by Dr. Morgan full of very medically sound advice. I could find you a copy if you'd like!"

And wanted advice from the 1900s...

Sadly, that would be hugely advanced for someone on the cusp of the 16th century.

"I would love it," Lucrezia beamed. "It may come in terribly useful. You see, I am to be married this spring."

If 16th century Rome had had engagement rings, this is where Lucrezia would have flashed hers. Although, truthfully, she probably would have been holding it conspicuously for the last several months.

"That's wonderful," said Rilla enthusiastically. "Is your betrothed quite handsome?"
