Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There was the bonfire for everyone who thought Maryland in January was a little too cool for their taste, as well as the moddable warm food and drinks, and chairs and tables in the school colors of blue and gold. Some tables were also set a little further away from the crowds.

Because there were always people who preferred the fringes.

After meeting (and re-meeting) the people the school said Gert had to meet, she and Old Lace made their way to the food tables to select an array of snacks. Old Lace whimpered a bit, as seven-foot dinosaurs did when confronted with delicious food, but Gert was used to that and just shook her head. Once she had her food picked out, with her plate in one hand and a bowl of water for Old Lace in the other, Gert set off for a shady tree to sit near, making sure to telepathically let Old Lace know not to knock anyone over while en route unless they sounded really, really annoying.

Gert was super responsible.

Petra approached with just a liiiiiiiiittle bit of trepidation and said, "Hi! Are you a student? Should I know who you are already?"

Oh dear. Good try, Petra.

Old Lace fixed Petra with big, adorable, confused eyes for a moment before Gert interjected. "She's a pet," she explained. But more importantly, as one of her eyebrows shot up: "You get a lot of students who are velociraptors around here?"

"Well, no," Petra said, "as far as I know, that would be a first. But we do have a teacher who's a talking pink pony, and sometimes kids get turned into animals and stuff, so." She shrugged. "I figured it would be rude to rule it out."

"Got it." That had probably been covered by her sibling already, so Gert didn't feel the need to rehash. "Well, I'm Gert. This is Old Lace, who probably won't try to talk to you unless you're offering her pizza."

And even then it would just be hopeful whimpering.

"Old Lace seems almost perfectly normal now," Karina said cheerfully. Okay, not really, but in comparison... "Have you seen the talking pink pony?"

Because she'd seen the talking pink pony.

"Hi Gert. Hi Old Lace."

Gert nodded to her once this comment would finally load. "Not yet," she said dubiously. "Seriously?"

"Hey, there's the dinosaur I heard about," Jessica said as she approached. She turned to Gert and smiled. "Congratulations on winning the animal sidekick sweepstakes."

Gert couldn't help grinning slightly at that. "Yeah? You've seen the guys with the fluffy dog and the raven, right?"

"Just because a raven is probably a descendant of a dinosaur doesn't make it as great," Jessica said. "I'm Jessica, by the way. Hi."

"Gert," Gert replied. "And Old Lace, who incidentally takes up way more space in a dorm room than a bird. That's one point for the raven."

Ulrik, being from the seventeenth century as he was, hadn't even the slightest clue what a dinosaur even was. That particular bit of up-time knowledge hadn't exactly been a priority.

And, so, yes, there was a pause-and-stare from Ulrik. He probably wasn't the first, and likely not the last.

Well that sounded... vaguely Latin. "I've never heard of such a creature," he said slowly. It- she- looked rather terrifying, but then so had American vehicles the first time he'd seen them.

Victor had learned a couple things in the last seven months: To start off with, he no longer assumed everyone he knew knew him.

Didn't mean his heart didn't start thudding like crazy when he spotted Gert, though.

"Hi," he said. "So ... nice dinosaur."

He figured if she knew him, she'd either take it as a joke or ask what the hell he was on, and if she didn't, it wouldn't sound insane.

"Thanks," Gert said, not a note of recognition in her voice as she absently stroked Old Lace's back. "She's a velociraptor. Name's Old Lace. She won't attack you if you want to pet her."

Oh hey, Victor knew how this one went. (And, he noticed, Gert was a lot more pleasant on first meeting when she wasn't sort of kidnapping you for being a potential supervillain.)

"She's a deinonychus," he said, reaching out to touch the dinosaur's neck. "A lot of people think they look like velociraptors."

Sorry, Gert. Victor in any universe is picky about his dinosaurs.

"What sort of beast is this?" Po asked, a little taken aback when he wandered past Gert and Old Lace.

They didn't really have dinosaurs where he was from, so he was inclined to think dragon, but that just seemed silly.

"She's not a beast, she's a pet," Gert corrected Po sharply. "And she's a veloci-- a deionychus."

Sigh, Victor.

"That's a kind of dinosaur," she added.

"Hey!" Karla said, getting jostled. Granted, it was her own fault, considering she was standing between Old Lace and the last of the steak on sticks. "Watch it, I'm--"

She spun around and came face-to-face with a dinosaur. In normal circumstances, this would be a cause for terror.

Karla, however, grinned. "A dinosaur! Eeee! Hello! Hi, I'm Karla!"

Nemi was going to have a frieeeend! Or be an appetizer. One of those!

Oh god, the enthusiasm. Karla was so... chipper.

"...Hi," Gert said, much more mildly than Karla had sounded. "Gert. And this is Old Lace. She's a... deionychus."

Damn it, Victor, way to mess up her worldview.

There was a dinosaur, Gert! How was she supposed to be all grumpy and boring about a dinosaur?!

"Pleased to meet you, Old Lace," Karla said, smiling up at the dinosaur. "And, you too, Gert?"

She was going to get around to actually looking at you in a minute, Gert. Really. "Pet, student, or intelligent companion?"

Sorry. It was a question Gert was probably going to get many more times over the coming weeks.
