Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There was the bonfire for everyone who thought Maryland in January was a little too cool for their taste, as well as the moddable warm food and drinks, and chairs and tables in the school colors of blue and gold. Some tables were also set a little further away from the crowds.

Because there were always people who preferred the fringes.

Another fantastic thing about Gert not kidnapping him: She was not automatically treating Victor like a jerk. If it wasn't for the fact she was supposed to be dead (and if he thought too hard on that one, he was going to bluescreen), this would be sort of awesome.

"She's bigger than a velociraptor," he explained patiently, "and see those giant claw things on her hind feet? That's a deinonychus thing. Velocireptors don't have 'em."

He jammed his hands in his pockets to make sure they wouldn't shake. "I'm Victor, by the way. Resident dinosaur geek. Hi."

"Gert," she replied slowly, looking from Victor to Old Lace. "Hi. In my defense, I haven't had a ton of internet access since I got her."

Okay, this was the point where Victor should probably tell Gert everything he knew about her and Old Lace.

Or ... was it a lie automatically if he just left things out so he didn't seem like a creeper? He decided it wasn't.

"I know how that goes," he said sympathetically. "I have an insane memory for stuff like this. Doesn't seem like you offended her, anyhow."

"Yeah, I'm pretty sure she'll live," Gert agreed wryly. "So, what, are you from some kind of world with dinosaurs everywhere or something?"

"Only in the Savage Land," Victor said dryly, remembering a certain unforgettable night. (What had Warren done with Cabron, anyhow?) "I'm from L.A."

"So'm I," Gert offered, somewhat surprised to finally meet someone from the same place as her. And the mention of the Savage Land, because hey, she knew what that was. "What part?"

"Pretty sure it's not your neighborhood." Was this the part of Victor that sometimes pretended to be a tough barrio kid? It was. "East Angeles was my last school before here."

"I've heard of that," Gert said, but yeah, no, it was way on the other side of town from where she'd lived. "The one where they're putting in metal detectors because some kids were getting violent, right? I guess this place is probably a step up."

"It wasn't that bad," Victor said out of loyalty. "But ... yeah. My mom freaked about the metal detector idea. I ended up leaving before they put them in."

"None of those here?" Gert wondered. "Somehow I can't see metal detectors going with the architecture."

"They have some pretty futuristic stuff in there," Victor said casually, turning his eyes to the castle. "But nah, no metal detectors. No RAs or whatever in the dorms, either. They trust us."
