Kicking Ass, Teamwork Style (Wednesday, Period 2, Week 2)

Messages had been sent out to all the students to wear comfortable clothes for activity today, and by the way, that should be the dress standard for the rest of the session because duh. (Okay, the message hadn't actually said 'because duh.' Not in the final draft.)

When they arrived today, they'd find the Danger Shop set up as a military obstacle course. Hey, it was the same one Kennedy made the junior Slayers run whenever she got to supervise a training session, okay?

...no sign of Kennedy, though. Pinned to the low wall that made up the first obstacle on the course was a hastily scrawled note:

Sorry. Unexpected demon-related crisis at home. Your assignment: GET EVERYONE ALL THE WAY THROUGH THIS. Remember it's not a competition. Someone needs help with part of it, you help them. Teamwork, remember?

Evan had to admit, it was kind of reassuring to see a Danger Shop set up to do more or less the same thing that the Danger Shop back at the Jean Grey School was supposed to do.

Except maybe this one was less prone to actively trying to kill people, which would be nice.

He actually couldn't wait to give this a try, and was just barely managing to not bounce on his toes.

It was a good thing that Cassie was in pretty good shape. She looked at the course and hoped she could not only handle it, but that she'd be able to help others.

Going into an obstacle course without any knowledge of the runes it was going to require kind of took the whole point out of being a Shadowhunter, but it wasn't like Alec expected that much from it, being designed for mundies and all. He did appreciate the emphasis on helping his classmates out, though -- any excuse to not show off his full strength in front of the class was fine by him.

There are 12 steps, in separate threads for convenience. By the way, Kennedy said you had to get through the course. She never said you had to do it exactly according to the rules.

Obstacle Course 1: Low Wall

It was a little wall! Evan was pretty sure that everyone in the class was capable of this one, so he was up and over and running to the next obstacle with only a brief glance back to make sure his classmates were handling it okay.

He didn't even need to use powers for that one! Between Uncle Cluster's training and Headmaster Logan's 'Fighting With Fighting' class, this sort of thing was pretty much second nature.

Obstacle Course 2: Stepping Stones

Raised pedestals, but just to make things fun there's mud on the ground beneath.

Obstacle Course 3: "Rubble"

Three very low walls (about three feet) alternating with three horizontal bars of equal height. The point here is to climb then duck in rapid succession to get through this section.

Obstacle Course 4: Tunnel

It's low, it's kind of dark, and you're going to have to crawl or slither or something.

Obstacle Course 5: Dodging Panels

Sort of like a maze, you need to follow the zigzagging path through this set of walls.

Obstacle Course 6: Low Ropes

Obstacle Course 7: Ditch

No, not your classmates. The trench-like one that you will have to leap over somehow.

Obstacle Course 8: Corridor

There are tall window-like openings in the walls that make up this corridor. Just to make things challenging, the Danger Shop is rigged to shoot Nerf darts at you through the openings. Better get evasive.

Obstacle Course 9: Balancing Bridge

Balance beam. Basically.

Obstacle Course 10: Window

It's a wall. With windows in it. Climb through and try not to hit your head or something.

Obstacle Course 11: Apex Ladder

Climb up and over. Good luck.

Obstacle Course 12: Terrace

Run up the incline, jump down two ledges with approximately five-foot drops each, and then you're at the finish line. Congrats!

This class brought to you by me heading down to San Diego for Comic-Con today and speaking of comics, hi, latest Season 9 issue, I feel kind of weird about this but I actually didn't hate you, but for god's sake, writers, YOU HAVE TWO ISSUES LEFT OF THIS ARC TO GIVE ME A DAMN LAST NAME ALREADY. FREAKING SIMONE HAS ONE, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. IS THIS SO HARD?!?

*ahem*

...no, seriously, this arc with Kennedy in it is promising to actually be pretty interesting. I feel kinda dirty admitting that I'm looking forward to the rest of it. Watch me regret that eventually.
